New Album Discussion 1 - Songs of..... - Unreasonable guitar album

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.

Same. I mean, I'll prob buy the digital tracks for what a CD should be and then put it all on...wait for it...a CD with the added bonus of no liner-notes or art!
Thankfully I have flexible ethics when it comes to buying music. When it comes to giant major label acts who don't need the money, if I don't buy a physical copy they're not getting a cent from me. That goes to the indie bands, preferably through Bandcamp if they're on the site.

I've said this before, but every single person who is a Spotify music subscriber is a bigger thief (and has devalued music more) than anyone who has ever used Napster, torrents, or literally shoplifted from stores. Paying 5 cents or whatever for someone's entire discography doesn't let you off the hook.

From U2Songs:
"The second fan gathering was held in a theatre in Dublin. The venue has a capacity of about 400 people, but was only half-full for the event. This was expected to be the biggest of the events being held."

This is really weird. I applied to go to this but heard nothing. It would be bizarre if they either under-allocated the tickets or if half the people didn't turn up.

Weird for it to be half empty, especially at the Dublin one.

Just remembered I had to change my address on u2.com, logged in and saw something about the second volume of the lyric book - track progress on your order. It's "in progress". I renewed back in February.

I caved and braved zootopia:

From Stateless:

Thanks to U2, and a reminder to check my spam folder, I was one of the lucky chosen to hear How to Reassemble and Atomic Bomb at a fully equipped Dolby room in NYC. Yes, the mix and sound were un-freaking-believable! Mindblowing! At times like being in the studio with them, or maybe the next room listening to the mix. You could hear every whisper, breath, creak, string scratch, etc. So crisp and clear. At the same time it was like literally being IN the sound, enveloped in 360 degrees by it. Larry and Adam holding you up and setting boundaries around while Edge's guitar swirled all around and Bono right there in your face. I came away with a much better impression of this shadow album hearing it in that setting vs my tinny little computer speakers. The music came to life. Treason was a hit, getting applause at the end. The note I scribbled in the dark, and barely legible, just says "BANGER" with an attempt, I think, at drawing an exploding head. During Happiness (which didn't grab me online), I similarly scratched out something like, "Edge directly in my f*****g veins!". So very happy to have gotten this opportunity!
Only downside, as I've seen mentioned elsewhere, was the baffling lack of any sort of atmosphere or festivity. There were no signs outside or inside the venue indicating the event, and no announcement or something from a rep welcoming us and telling us what to expect. Just lights down, a short Dolby ad, then the promo image of the band on screen while the album played. Not even a giveaway as simple as a sticker or art card, or even a tote bag for us to take away. Some opportunity to take photos to post to social media. Hey, it's what us kids like these days! 😁 Oh, and my banner image of the countdown truck? That was a purely accidental discovery as I was heading home. It was parked about 3 blocks from the venue. Bit of a head scratcher. But at least I got to see it IRL.
Anyway, here I am nearly 24hrs later and still can't get those amazing sounds out of my head. Can't wait to get the cds in my hands, though I will never have a sound system that will ever do the kind of justice Dolby did. 🤯🤯🤯🤯

Another member recalls applauding at Treason.

All of these are grain of salt. Zootopia is the part of the internet I avoid at all costs most of the time.

Is it time to buy an Atmos system to make U2 great again?

I am looking forward to hear Treason, Luckiest in full.

No mentions so far of Origin of Species, I mean Evidence of Life ?

I read another reviewer who praised Edge's performance. I get the impression it's largely an Edge-solo tune?

Yeah I don’t get the expectations for festivity here. This is a leftovers disc from a 20 year reissue of a polarising album.
i feel like it's only polarizing with hardcore fans that waste their days on message boards and U2 related social media.

the album itself was incredibly successful, and the songs still go off live with the normies.

Spot on, every single charted well (in the UK anyway). The casual fan is not on social media or forums debating every single little sound on the album.

I really came back around to Bomb but now that I know that Mercy was originally going to be Track 12, dammit U2. WHY? Didn't have to be a single but just a really good closing track!

Yeah I love it. I only call it polarising because a lot of fans hold it up as the beginning of the end of the band’s creative spirit.

Am cautiously optimistic for this set. If people can listen to it for what it is and not expect “the new U2 album” then I think there will be a lot to enjoy.

Yeah, I can't say I'm the hugest fan of the album. But fwiw, it does have some absolute bangers (namely CoBL, but I also quite adore OotS and OSC), and I just have a lot of fond memories being a U2 fan at that time (it was my first experience with the pre-album hype cycle). Good times <3

With HTDAAB the decline of my interest in U2 started. ATYCLB was the perfect return to some kind of U2 greatness including great arena shows.
The bomb was again very U2ish if it makes any sense, but a bit boring for my taste

What do you want them to do, get some clowns and balloons and hold a parade?
I mean, maybe a sign or two and a compere so it doesn't come across as a scam from an episode of Always Sunny or something. For a few listening parties surely they could have sprung for some goodies and I mean, the bare minimum you'd expect? I know its not a new album, but its either something (with listening parties) or its nothing.

Yeah, you can hear the U2 songs tonight. Just round that corner and into the door at the end.

This alley looks kind of dark. You sure?

Yeah yeah, the last door at the end by the dumpster.

I love HTDAAB, but its clear: What saved the album were the producers, the big evidence of it you can see on what was "Sometimes" before and what became after Steve Lillywhite.

Admittedly, I'm one of these myself. I'm probably repeating myself, but much of it sounds (to me, anyway) like an amalgamation of everything they did before it; which doesn't need to be a negative. It was just somewhat disappointing for a band that was so good at reinvention and creating albums that had distinct identities. I will, however, defend "A Man and a Woman" (the most unique track on the album) all day long and I don't think their choice of album cover sucks as badly as people have said.

That being said, it was also a great time to be a U2 fan and everything they did felt exciting, regardless of whether I thought the material was top notch or not. It was my first time seeing them on tour, the first time my friends admitted they kinda liked one of their songs (Vertigo), I nearly got to go to a concert with a girl I was hugely crushing on, U2:3D came out of that era, the U2 iPod (still have it and it still works!), etc.

I need to revisit the album properly which is what I'm looking forward to doing. I've also got fond memories of the period and the tour as a whole.

Standing near to Bono when he was singing the crescendo part of Sometimes You Can't Make It was a proper spine-tingling, goosebumps moment. And when I have listened back to some tracks recently, I really like them, especially with headphones - some interesting sonic stuff going-on.
