I actually don't agree that they should be focusing on touring more, recording less. I feel the opposite. I've seen some amazing shows from them, but I wouldn't say they've necessarily outdone themselves each time. I'd much rather they become a more recording-centric band and give us new music more frequently. That does a whole lot more for me than hearing Beautiful Day live again. But that's just me.

@dan_smee - I thought the same, that there's definitely a demo/Bongolese thing going on. I don't like the intro vocals but feels like a work-in-progress "let's loop that and put an effect on it".

I still love the Salome/Axtung Beibi demo tapes. I could listen to hours of that shit, its just fascinating to me which is why if they want to polish things up, I'd love to also hear early versions alongside it.

I kind of think if that's not happened by now, it ain't going to happen. I really thought there was a time where Edge in particular might start doing soundtrack work on his own as there's never been a better time to get into that where there's so much work available in tv and movies for established artists.

It's so hard not to think "what would I do?" if I was in their position, moreso now than ever as they're aging. Thinking about their legacy. I'd be recording and releasing music as much as I can. I know they don't like to release music without being able to tour it, but at this rate, there must be so many ideas that'll just never see the light of day.

I'm now all for seeing them live because otherwise I'll be waiting for new albums which will just never come.

It's not that it's all bad or all good - I don't particularly like it, but it's more "when am I ever going to listen to this again?" I guess I've reached the stage in my fandom where I no longer listen to songs just for the hell of it. For example, "A Room At The Heartbreak Hotel," is one that I would randomly listen to because it's U2, and I like U2, and I'd listen to some of their lesser material for variety's sake. I don't have that in me anymore, and Happiness is probably going to go in the "listened thrice and never again," pile.

We must remember that these are all B-Sides/Demos with the exception of Mercy, which was actually on the album until the last minute.

I've literally only listened to it twice. First was meh, second time I actually liked it.

So maybe I need to give it a fair shot.

But it is a b side, an outtake. It's not supposed to be the greatest thing ever. So there's that.
Exactly,go in with the attitude it's a throwaway b side and it's fine. Can actually say edge is on fire in this, bass and drums to.
As for the lyrics, they are OK.

But like you said it's not supposed to be the next One or With or without you.

Happiness is solid but definitely a B side. The verses are straight up bad, the riff is solid but too close to Franz Ferdinand, and there are too many ideas smashed together… but damn if I don’t love the chorus/main hook section “happiness is for those who don’t really need it” + the solo and breakdown from Edge. Musically those two moments in the song really speak to me. I’ll take all the “new” material at this point though!

I'm probably one of the only people in the world who has kept listening to the Spider-Man U2 soundtrack over the years. Granted there's only a few songs I kept in rotation, and "Pull the Trigger" is one of them. To me "Happiness" is just a rough early version of that song.

Yeah I called this out after the trailer - it is absolutely the same song.

I agree, but I think there's still a difference between bringing in all these younger producers to add elements, especially with additional musicians, and the organic development and experimentation that's allowed to occur when they just play together. Achtung Baby was done this way, regardless of how things were treated and processed.
