I always thought it was "from red islands across the strand" which actually appears to make sense.. unlike the other interpretation, but I'm not sure.. I'll have to give it another listen to be sure.

In the lyrics archive it says
"from red I learned the cross the strand" so I guess that is the correct line though they claim to not be 100% accurate.
