Q Review of HTDAAB

The new Q is yet again loaded with U2, and Bono and Edge appear on the cover from the Q Awards.

There's interviews with the band from the Q Awards, Postcard from The Edge (very funny - about hating making videos and 'loving' MTV), and a review of the new album.

Q gives it FOUR STARS (out of a maximum of 5).

The review is quite lengthy so I'll try to type it up later, I have a million things to do at this moment.. just thought I'd let you all know. If somebody has a scan of it that would be much easier ;)

Four stars out of 5 means a very good album but not a classic so I am a bit disappointed.

ATYCLB got 4 stars so Q are saying HTDAAB is only equal to ATYCLB.

I didn't like ATYCLB so I've got to say that has me a bit worried.

Achtung Baby got 5 stars from Q.

Still Pop only got 4 stars and I really liked that so you never know.

Jesus, people, calm down. 4/5 is a very good score. Personally I think 'perfect' scores should be reserved for rare occasions, when you come across an album that really gives a shake to the current state of music, and will probably stand the test of time as a classic. AB was such an album, and deservedly got 5/5. HTDAAB, from what we've read and heard will probably not be as revolutionary, but that doesn't mean it can't be a very good album. A 4/5 score reflects that. I hope all the other reviews score it as hightly, but be prepared because many probably won't.

No one is complaining. Just waiting for all the "i told you this isn't the best U2 album of all time" gibberish to start flying from the peanut gallery based on this review when we still haven't heard the damn album.

When Achtung Baby came out I believe RollingStone gave it 4 stars. And then somehow, magically over the years, it has been increased to 5 stars. What it boils down to is that these people don't know what they are talking about.

I have been a fan for 13 years and every album as far as I can remember has recieved 4 stars initially. It is kind of ridiculous really. It's like if they don't like it they are too afraid to give it only 3 stars because it is U2. And if they really love it they don't want to look like they love it (because it's not cool to love U2) by giving it 5 stars. And so it receives the mandatory 4 star review.

It's really quite a joke. I wouldn't be too concerned about it.

I should have said 2 stars just for the reaction! Basically the only criticism was for 'Crumbs' which they said, "never quite comes together as a memorable tune", everything else is positive.

is it possible that Q would do a review after just the listening party?

It is entirely possible and that gives this review even less credibility.

But I still want to read it!

It is very hard for a reviwer to give 5 stars, if that means instant classic.

The British papers tend to be tougher on U2 than others.

I remember the Joshua Tree not getting 5 stars, but 4. ( Not sure in what Magasine, possibly Q or a previous version of that Mag, or NME which was hostile to U2 at that time).

In any case the reviewer praised the album, but said it had flaws: notably it got weaker towards the end, and there was a very very embarrassing moment ( he said) when between songs Bono started warbling about O, Great Oceans, and Seas and Running to Them

Those criticisms were valid enough. Now we see it as a Classic, however not then. Time will tell on this.

Does anyone have this review? We all need to read it! We are running out of things to complain about!

who cares what Q gave it. to aa lot of us I am sure it's still going to be a 5-star album, and that's all tha matters.

LOL, 4 stars is an excellent review. They give out VERY few 5 stars.

Why trust on some journalist that listens the album once and thinks.....mmm 4....or 5? mmm nah 4. I think is playing safe, most U2 albums get those 4 or 5 stars in every magazine.

i remember Q gave 5 stars to AB and JT, 4 stars to UF, Pop, Zooropa and ATYCLB, 3 for R&H (correct me if im wrong). i forgot the first 3 albums. Q is very objective, in the first review of AB they said it's the best U2 album, not many other magazines said the same thing at that time. and when they gave Pop 4 (when the album was not yet released), i felt the same as most of you are feeling now, i hope it was 5, but now im totally agree with Q. maybe we should prepare for the oh-that's-another-not-that-great U2 album, or wait and listen to it, and judge it by ourselves.

can someone please go down to the shops and buy this? Why should I have to wait for information in this digital age?
