I'll try to keep this short enough. I went to the Dr.'s office the other day for a manditory blood test one week before my physical. The testing showed I have a very low blood platelet count...and I don't know what this means.

A neurologist friend of my wife says the medicine I am on for my seizures may be the cause, but I don't know for sure. I called my Dr. first thing this morning to ask that question and his nurse said to hold off on the blood testing until further notice and she would talk to my Dr.

To be honest, I am quite scared to go to the Dr. since I have had my seizures 2 years ago because they never found the cause. And while that is nothing atypical of epilepsy, as in many people don't know their causes, I fear every time I get a blood test or physical that they are going to find something serious.

And now this happens. They found something...and I don't know how serious it is. I want to tell people about it, but I don't want to make them worry about me or feel sorry. So, if I do bring it up, I play it off like "I'm fine." But really I'm not.

So, I dunno. Can you think, or if you are someone who prays, pray for me with this?

Lying awake at night worrying ain't fun.
Just wanted you to know my thoughts are with you.
Hope everything will turn out to be allright.

Maybe this will all help your doctor to find a reason for your seizures and be able to prescribe appropriate treatment.

Hope everything turns out okay.

 I'm sorry Phil. I am praying for you and for Leis.

I know it's easy for people to say "I'm sure it's nothing", and I wish I could tell you more about why platelets fall....but unfortunetly I'm not that far in class's to know that much. I do know that they can fall due to a minor infection or cold. You may have just had a sort of "off" day the day the test was taken.

If it is due to the medication you're on and they see this as a problem, they'll maybe switch meds, or there may not be a problem and you'll just have to take a vitamin or something to help keep off infections/colds.

I'm praying for you guys though.

I'm not a praying person Phil, but i will send lots of positive thoughts your way.

And, I know it's probably not going to make you worry any less, but there ARE lots of things that can cause a low platelet count, many of them completely treatable and reversible. I won't go into details, as you probably don't need anything more to think about at the moment, there's obviously already plenty on your mind.

All the best for a quick diagnosis, and speedy recovery.

My money is on the medication. He takes 1200mg of a strong anticonvulsant per day, and low platelet count is one of the most common side effects. The sucky thing is, is that if I'm write and he has to switch drugs, the new drug is even NEWER and MORE expensive than the current one.

My Doc finally called me and said I would have to re-take a blood test. That is no surprise.

Then, as I am sitting getting my flat tire replaced, the secretary calls and says that my actual appointment on this Friday, the physical, needs to be rescheduled b/c of family emergency.

She said, "we can get you back in with your Dr. on November 28?"

I said that the last thing I had heard was I had a low platelet count and needed to get more tests done to figure it out...so I don't think November is going to work.

She said, "let me go get the nurse." Ah communication. :D

Well, I asked the nurse if this was something they thought was very serious or whatever. She did say they think it is because of the meds I'm on. But they want to test to see if it was an "off day".

I'm really just not thinking about it today. Tomorrow, I'll get more blood drawn. Hopefully the student nurse doesn't make me swell up and bruise again. :)

Some people say, "doesn't it bug you not knowing anything?" I usually just reply with "meh...I mean, I have seizures for no reason...this can't be that bad."

Phil - when these things come up for Mr. Blu & I, he always gets himself worked up. I'd barely gotten the news that my doctor had found early uterine cancer in one of my biopsies before Kelly started worrying (out loud!! :madwife: ) about what if the cancer had already spread somewhere else!

As I told him: I realize the unknown is scary, particularly when dealing with one's health, but the worst thing I believe you can do is create trouble for yourself. In other words, most anyone can have an odd test result come back from time to time. It doesn't mean there's something wrong and worrying about the multitude of things it could be just makes you lose sleep & runs your blood pressure sky high.

Believe me, I know it's easier said than done but just try to take it in stride & not worry until you know what's going on. Once you have more information you may even see there's nothing to worry about!

My prayers are with you & Liesje while you wait.

thanks for this. The last thing I said on the phone to the nurse was something like, "well, lets just take the blood test tomorrow, and we'll just go from there." She laughed.

So, I'm trying to think like that. :)

Thanks everyone for your comments. I know I'll be fine.
