Welcome to the club! At one point some of us were thinking of getting t-shirts and painting great big neon-colored "L"'s on them to show off our political views! We never did it. But it might not be a bad idea if you are a t-shirt lover.

good for you.

i cant believe dubya actually thinks by calling kerry a liberal he's painting him with a bad brush. i'd love to be called a liberal. what's wrong with that??

I don't have a problem with friends. I don't want to change the subject but wanted to share... You should see my inlaw's faces when I feel the need to share and express my liberal views:eeklaugh: It kills me every time. I can never get enough of those classic frowns and those disgusted head shakes.

i hear ya.

my entire family is quite conservative, though even all of them think george bush is an abomination.

make sure your L shirt, hahahaha, isnt mistaken by some onlookers as presenting you as a Loser.

Does anyone else realise that modern liberalism is actually not liberalism? Liberalism refers specifically to libertarians. As such, most liberals are actually Republicans.

The preferred term is "progressive" ;)

This has been indoctrinated in me by my rather liber... I mean progressive Government teacher, Dr. Jim Josefson.

(I'm a progressive too)

What you're referring to is technically referred to as "classical liberalism," which, yes, tends to refer to capitalists. However, I do believe that there is a difference between "classical liberal" capitalists and modern "conservative" capitalists, namely being their code of ethics. Adam Smith's original theory of capitalism is a fairly idealistic document, which assumes a certain level of ethical behavior and was a reaction against imperial corruption, IMO. Nowadays? We no longer have the imperialists, but we do now have a whole slew of "supply-side capitalists," who approach economics without any ethical regard for their behavior.

Hence, I do believe that classical liberals and supply-side capitalists are completely different beasts altogether.

This is pretty much just a course for non-majors who want to be spoon-fed the instructors ideas. As such, we really only scratch the surface. Which is fine by me, because I'd rather analyze the structures in Finnegan's Wake. I respect anyone with deep sociopolitical knowledge and philosophy, but personally I'm content thinking abuot Stephen Deadalus, Clarissa Dalloway, Nick Adams, and King Arthur. :)

Hehe...fair enough. Even "scratching the surface" is good knowledge to have!
