Hey y'all. I'm a fifteen year old huge U2 fan from the U.K. Anyway, what I wanted to talk about was a problem that has just started affecting me in the past three days. Without any previous signs, I somehow seem to have lost quite a lot of my hearing (I would say maybe around 40%). I can still hear people when they talk to me, but everyone is so much quieter now, it's almost like turning down the TV halfway in that I can still judge how loud they are talking by the pitch and the subject, but it's just not projecting itself to my ears. I honestly don't know what the problem is, I'm really hoping it's a temporary thing that can easily be sorted using some sort of medication, but I would lying to say I'm not worried. The worst part is when I speak, as I can barely register what I am saying even though I know I'm talking reasonably loudly. Has anyone else hear had problems like this in the past?

Also, to describe exactly what it is like, I would say it is like being in a plane, where your ears become really stuffy because of the pressure and you have to swallow or yawn to try and 'pop' your ears and make sounds much clearer. Only at the moment, yawning is not making a difference, even when my ears pop the sound does not improve.

Any advice or encouragement on how to deal with this would be very welcome!

Are you sick at all? Sounds like it might be the effects of a sinus infection.

Anyway, if you have THAT much of a significant hearing loss, go see a doctor. There's not much that anyone can help you with on an internet message board.

hi, as someone who's been hard of hearing all of my life, i know that hearing loss can be a scary thing. there were times when i would lose more of my hearing because of sinus pressure or being on a plane or going to places that are high in altitude.

i would suggest making an appointment to see an audiologist. they may be able to help you determine if you are losing your hearing or if its just something minor. good luck to you.

as Canadiens said, it could well be a sinus infection, or maybe even an ear infection.

Do you have any other symptoms? pain, swelling etc?

It may also simply be wax, a build up can cause some hearing problems. this it pretty easily treatable.

(BTW, it doesnt get worse after water gets in them does it? only I have this problem where everytime I get a bath, water (or something) will get stuck in my right ear, and cause it to feel very pressurised, and a little of my hearing goes. not much, but a bit. And it doesnt sort itself out for a while.)

I have also been hard of hearing my whole life. You should take what icelle said to heart, try to see an audiologist as soon as you can. He or she will be able to help you and determine what is wrong, and what you can do about it. Have you been listening to music very loud, or heard any very loud noises lately? If you have then that may be the cause to the sudden loss of hearing.

If it is a hearing loss, then I would suggust that you get a good brand of hearing aids, make sure that your health insurance covers the hearing loss, try to look at people when they talk to you (look at their mouths when they talk), keep a close eye on body language, sit in the front row in class, when people mumble and you can't hear them then just ask them to repeat what they said, study up on hearing loss (like the history, what other people have to say about it ect.), um.... when you get a cold or something be prepared for your hearing to get worse for the time that you have the illness, it never hurts learning a bit of sign language, and lastly try to meet any other hard of hearing that are in your area. Sorry about the really long run-on sentance.

With all of this said, I hope that everything turns out alright for you.

OK thanks for the help guys, in particular Green Eyes, I'll get it checked out a.s.a.p. Thanks again.

LOL. Whenever anyone did that to me I'd actually repeat what I'd said. They'd then say "Pardon?" again and I'd repeat what I'd just said again...by the third "Pardon?" I'd usually get it. This happened EVERY time I mentioned being a bit deaf. :reject:
