whoa, listening to the radio here when they do a retro show, its so incredible that the year they brought up tonight was 1991!

i mean 1991!

the year you may recall: 'Smells Like Teen Spirit', which absolutely rocked the foundations of the music world, with a brash rebellious young man named Kurt Cobain, who would later gain cult status in the form of James Dean

11 years?!?! yet, it feels like yesterday when the song came out and would change music forever.

the other important event was- Achtung Baby-U2's most adventurous and arguably their finest album yet! there were those that were puzzled what the band was doing, especially the audience that had learned to live with concert anthems from the 'War' era to the 'Joshua Tree'. There came irony, darkness, yet the passion was ever so evident. Especially when the first release off the album was 'The Fly'. which in the sands of time, has been accepted as a 'typical u2 song'

11 years!

Oooh, I wish I knew, I wish I knew. And had it back.

I can't believe it's been that long either. At least things have turned out well for our favorite band.

I was home on maternity leave in late summer of 91 and I remember very clearly seeing the video of Smells Like Teen Spirit for the first time, and wondering if I was crazy for liking that song, as I was supposed to be a grown up.

Then of course Achtung Baby was played non stop in my house and my son fell in love with Mysterious Ways. Just the other day he heard it in the car and asked me if that was U2's first song LOL! I had to tell him no U2 were making songs long before you were born. His reply was --->

Let's see, I was in school then.

Come to think of it, I was in school for most of U2's albums.

"Boy" and "October": high school

"War," "Unfor. Fire" and "Joshua Tree": Undergraduate

"Achtung Baby," "Zooropa" and "Pop": Grad. school

R&H and ATYCLB were the only two U2 albums released when I wasn't in school. And ATYCLB is the ONLY full studio album by U2 that was released when I wasn't in school.

No wonder I like ATYCLB so much - there was no school around to torture me at the time!

A few weeks ago, in an attempt to be teenagers again, my friends and I decided to go to the bar that we used to go to when we were 17 and 18 (thanks to the wonders of fake i.d). We hung out most of the night in the main room and listened to Creed, Slipknot, etc. Mostly Crap, but we were comfy, and they have cheap beer. As we were leaving we decided to go and check out the Retro room for a while. When we walked in they were playing Rage Against the Machine (killing in the name of), We chuckled that we remembered that song from high school, then they played Red Hot Chili Peppers (give it away), and we gasped that we were ancient. Then they played Mysterious Ways..... That was when I realized that I am an old feckin' lady now....... We left immediatly after the song was over, and I don't imagine we will go back!

Well, I know I'm being a party pooper here but look how fast grunge disappeared...it annoys me when people put Nevermind at the top of lists of the greatest albums of all time, because in the end I don't think it or that genre of music really had that much of an impact. I don't think nearly as many people would be calling Kurt Cobain a genius if he'd lived...and I'm sure a lot of people wouldn't even recognize Teen Spirit today!

But Achtung Baby is very good.

I. too. was on maternity leave late that summer. My son was born early August. We recently watched a home movie of him taken during that year and "Achtung Baby" was on while filming. My son was dancing with me for a bit. He's a U2 fan now.

I couldn't agree more. I have felt for a long time that Nirvana, although a solid band, were never really one of the 'great' bands. nirvana's great post-cobain success is a testament to the ZooTV truism:

Death is a career move.

LOL BostonAnne! We just did that too! We have video of my son in one of those Johnny Jumpers (attaches to the door frame), and he is just jumping like mad to Achtung Baby music in the background.

My son likes some U2, I wouldn't call him a fan at all, more like a love/hate relationship.

LOL! I can imagine a little guy bouncing up and down in the jumpy jump to songs from "Achtung Baby"! Awww!

I guess sometimes my son can have the same love/hate relationship. I left him behind to take my daughter to the October 30th concert and had the moment of a lifetime, so I think he hurts from being left out at times.

In hindsite, I had the opportunity to take him to the Oct 31st show, but never thought he would rather do that then trick or treat! LOL! Now, he insists the show would have been his choice.

Well... you make a good point regarding Kurt and his image. I do believe that dying young as a rock star or with any celebrity status for that matter can in the end, make you more than you really are. BUT, that being said, I really do believe that Nirvana had a huge impact on music as we know it today. You may not see it directly but trust me, it is there. Unmistakeably. I would have to say that 1991-1994 were some of the most incredible years of my life--> mostly because of the music being offered...... Grunge will live forever in my heart and be a huge part of who I am.
