U2 Hop on the Special-Edition Bandwagon for Upcoming Album
ChartAttack can remember a simpler time of CD releases, when the standard black-and-clear-plastic jewelcase was the only way of delivering your digitized album to the public. No cardboard CD sleeves (cheaper for indie bands, environmentally friendly for The Hip), no all-clear plastic cases (how trendy it was in 1993) or cases with an orange or green tint; no perfect reproductions of LP sleeves for Rolling Stones reissues; no candy in the jewelcases, no miniature harmonica attached; no mini-books with the CD tucked in and especially no CD/DVD combos to dissaude MP3 downloaders.
Well, to be fair, we didn’t have DVDs or MP3 downloaders back then.
As flashy and cool as the special edition CD package can be, it’s also usually more expensive than the regular disc and that can start to add up — especially when you’re a slightly obsessive music collector. And so we come to U2.
In a bid to make an even bigger splash with their upcoming comeback, Bono, The Edge and co. are putting out a super-sized version of their new disc. The special collector’s edition of "How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb" will be released alongside the regular CD on Nov. 23 and will feature the album itself, a DVD with studio footage of the band, and four acoustic tracks, all wrapped up in a 48-page hardcover book.
And yeah, it’s going for about 40 bucks in the U.S., so you might want to take out a loan.
Though not a special collector’s edition or anything, the Irish rockers also have another book ["U2 Show: The Art of Touring"] coming out this fall.
U2 are currently pushing the upcoming album and their kinda lacklustre single "Vertigo," appearing on British television staple Top Of The Pops to perform the song last Friday. According to Billboard.com, their short set was delivered from the roof of a parking garage in West London to hundreds of onlooking fans.
