Love Is Bigger Than Anything In Its Way appreciation thread

Honestly, I did not expect to like this. I'd read tons of stuff about it before I listened, mostly about how poppy it is, with a fair few dinging it for trying too hard. And I get it. I get that this is U2 consciously TRYING to be anthemic. I get that it's cheesy. BUT. Every time I listen, it...

    Early Song Rankings

I find the album very difficult to rank, because for me there are few absolute standouts, but also no real clunkers. It's of a very consistent, high quality. Still, my absolute first preliminary ranking, likely to change; 1. The Little Things That Give You Away 2. The Blackout 3. Red Flag Day 4...

SOE 31: Yes, we have no bananas

Honestly the most surprising thing about Refu-Jesus to me at this point is that Bono hasn't been using it in a million interviews. Usually the trite 'Oh God Bono thinks this is clever, doesn't he?' attempted wordplay gets kicked around for a while before it finds its permanent home in a song.

Get Out of Your Own Way

I'm quite surprised by how much I enjoy this one. It isn't the sort of U2 I'm normally crazy about, but I think it just works really, really nice as a slightly dreamy, effortless pop song. It's not an all time classic or anything, but it's fun, light and isn't trying to be more than it is...

    American Soul.

Honestly if one line in a classic song doesn't get the hate it deserves, it's 'More than a lot', which is just so transparently an effort to cram in something that works with the rhyme. You probably need to be a song as good as 'One' to pull that off, and I do think that's one of the issues...

    ** SPOILERS** The soundcheck thread

It remains hilarious to me that perhaps the most WTF moment of any of the New York shows - certainly up there - came on the first night with October. Only U2.

    NYC Setlist Party #3

From an entirely selfish point of view, I want them to do nothing exciting at one of the U2 nights which I'm not at so I hope this was the surprise. :p

    Changing the 'Innocence' set

If any song rotated with Vertigo, it would be Elevation. (Though even that isn't likely!) My main suggestion would just be to lengthen the second song slot into two to maximise those cool early days slots.

8 MSG shows. Which ones best?

I'm seeing five nights and I'm actually quite happy night 1 is one of them; yes it'll be the 'standard' set but that's worth seeing once!

So how are the new songs holding up?

One question I have is what the general audience 'awareness' of the new song seems to be, in the opinion of fans who have seen it. More than the NLOTH songs on 360? Non-single HTDAAB songs on Vertigo? I've seen a few people suggest Invisible's reaction has been flat because nobody knows it, but...

    Filming anywhere this time?

Latin America, Italy or Spain for the liveliest crowds. Since Latin America is next year and Turin is opening the leg when they'll be a tad rusty, that means they should go for Barca. I feel like they'll definitely want to film it in the first two tour legs as they seem to like getting a good...

What songs will be played at every show of the IE Tour?

Discotheque is one of my favourite songs but if it didn't come back on 360 despite such screamingly obvious oppurtunities and the extended snippet, I don't think it's coming back. Hilariously, the band may actually think they did it justice; U2.com claimed at least once that every single album...

    Denver #2 Setlist Party

Found the crappy justification from Willie Williams; Why U2 Doesn't Play 3-Hour Concerts "The biggest challenge we have now is that the show is as long as it can comfortably be – beyond 2hrs 15mins it starts to become a bit of a marathon for both band and audience"

    Denver #2 Setlist Party

Yeah the last two tours both had permanent places for *hugely* popular fan rarities and 360 was in stadiums, FGS. It's really not a case of fans demanding too much to ask that they have 1-2 fan favourite rarer songs in there. Even the closest thing so far, The Electric Co, was a regular just the...

    Denver #2 Setlist Party

I remember a diary entry from Willie Williams about how the band had become fixated on 2 hours 15 minutes as the ideal set length and how the audience get bored if you try to go longer than that. Spoken like a man who hasn't been to a Bruce Springsteen concert.

    The Troubles

My solution would be to go Bullet -> Troubles -> WOWY -> BD -> Pride to close out the main set if they want a place for it without adding any new songs or subtracting any of the others. That would kill the stupid Hands segue, fit The Troubles somewhere it isn't sandwiched between a bunch of big...

What songs will be played at every show of the IE Tour?

Personally, I'm expecting a fair few changes in the first set but only *next* year, assuming a stadium tour, new material (being played live even if not officially released, like 2010 360) and the desire to make changes for the return legs. Beautiful Day (12 times) - No comment needed Bullet...

    LA #5 Setlist Party

The visuals aren't as bad but bringing the show to a total halt for Bono to speechify for a bit, then the awkward snippet, then Bono *talking* over the guitar may be worse than Pride in momentum killing and sonic awkwardness.

    LA #5 Setlist Party

Troubles -> WOWY is great. But Beautiful Day -> Troubles... is really not. Neither is BD - > WOWY though. BD just doesn't belong in that slot.

Ten brand new songs in one set must be some sort of recent record, right?

    LA #5 Setlist Party

It's surely a lock now to be the most varied leg of any U2 tour, first or otherwise; can't be far from that. From memory, that must be Vertigo leg 3, right? EDIT: A quick check suggests it is indeed Vertigo leg 3 unless I missed something, but that's on a higher-than-I-remembered 48, so maybe...

    2015 U2 Tour - General Discussion Thread VI :)

While I agree with this, we hit those eight on the second night and since then there's only been one night with more than six. I wish they could find a consistent place in the second set for another a new song. (Yeah, I know, Invisible, but I prefer the album stuff.)
  25. TheUnknownCalle

    When will they.........

They won't. Along with SLABT, it just immediately sounds like a song that wouldn't really work live.
