I agree with 387. I'd put War in the top 3 ahead of TUF.
Yes Red Light is a clunker but each album has them (IMO.)
Back then there was such a thing as an album side and War's 1st side was
SBS
Seconds
NYD
Like a Song
Drowning Man:applaud:
Pretty close to the M word- IMO. The 2nd side fell off a...
Great topic. These are my favorites on each album excluding singles and title tracks.
Rejoice.
Seconds, Like a Song, Surrender.
Promenade, A sort of Homecoming
In God's Country.
Ultraviolet, Acrobat.
Playboy Mansion (My all-time underrated song.)
New York/ Grace
One Step...
By coincidence I listened to this coming to work this morning.
Such a great song, though Bono overdoes it on some of the choruses.
Beautiful thought and message. :applaud:
Been a U2 fan since 83.
Overrated- Pride. It's a great song, but doesn't belong in the canon of all-time U2 songs such as SBS, NYD, IWF, Bad, etc. IMO the beatification of King had already been done to death by that time, but maybe that's just me. (My parents were in the civil rights...
I don't get Trying to Throw.. Its a throwaway song about nothing in a sea of brillance. The songs around it (The Fly, Mysterious Ways, Light My Way, Acrobat and yes, LIB) are brillant. I could listen to them 100 times and find something new in the music and I could write papers on the lyrics...
I just skimmed the thread but I'm surprised no one mentioned "Trying to Throw your arms around the world" (assuming they didn't.) Skipping that one makes AB much better.
But EP and America from UF is my choice.
And of course I AM is translated as Yahweh, which is the last song on the album. This makes a lot of sense, actually. It connects the first song to the middle song (All Because of You with the You being I AM) with the last song (Yahweh.)
Or you can believe the alcohol story.
I was in college and didn't even have TV when War came out. I'd barely heard of u2.
I was at a friend's house and NYD came on on MTV. I was captivated. The sound, the piano, the snow, Bono's voice. :applaud: It was so beautiful- and so haunting.
I got the album a few months later and it...
Sunday Bloody Sunday is when they became U2. That's when they found their voice. It's brilliant on so many levels and IMO their best ever. Actually I'd say it's the best rock song ever- if there can be such a thing.
I think Bono would agree that SBS is one of their best if you could pin him...
VP, just came back after being away for a while. I was in Best Buy and was going to get Zooropa but they did not have it. They had all other U2 albums but not that one. But thanks for remembering me. I'll get it soon but I hate going shopping and I don't own an Ipod (I'm showing my age. :D)...
