Politically if you had to pick, are you Left of Center or Right of Center?

Its hard sometimes to pick either or. People that are Democratic or left of center can still have views that are Republican or Right of Center views. People who are to the right of center can also have some political views on the left. Some would consider this the center, but I want to know if you had to pick, which side of the fence do you usually fall on once you add everything up, the left or the right. Voting for one or the other does not make one necessarily a republican or democrat. This should be interesting to view the results of this poll and I encourage everyone to vote regardless of your politcial views, political party, or country you come from. Thanks.

Why do we need labels?

'Group think' is counter-productive. It does not lead to understanding or solutions.

Gauche

For better or for worse, I have always been left of the centre, though I do have firm 'Conservative' tendencies as my Tory friends point out (all my friends, save one, are Tories/Republicans).

I come from a politically troubled family anyway; my grandfather was fanatically anti-right, given that he fought the Spanish Civil War and the Second World War, I don't blame him. However, interestingly enough, the rest of the family were Nationalists. As in, when Spain finally fell to Franco, they rejoiced. Hence they stayed in Spain, my grandfather did not.

However, though my father is practically a militant Socialist and my mother a Communist, I am by no means a pacifist. I don't belive in appeasement and I believe in the restriction of the rights of the Unions, as in, their wings need to be clipped. I've just spent the worst day of transportation ever (6 hours to get to a location that usually takes an hour to get to) all because some ungrateful and spoilt rail-conductors want a pay that is considerably higher than the higher-average wage, in the first place. I believe those that society depend on should NOT have the right to strike. Also, I'm still not convinced about female priests. I don't believe sex-changes are on the cards, I don't believe abortion is right.

I'm not a self-indulgent liberal. I don't believe that being a 'liberal' means in 'wallowing' in your God-given rights, nor does it mean 'abusing' them. I am not, by any means, a libertarian.

However, when it comes to economic theory, I follow Socialist economics, and I 'do' hate the Conservative Party for what it has done to Britain. I hate its mindless privatisation spree, its intended destruction of the Unions (hence now we have militant Unions causing more trouble), the way they turned the domestic economy into one of cut-throat ethics and unfair welfare policies, its virtual destruction of the National Health Service (so that now, they can all sit back and say that the future of Health Service lies in the 'Private' Health Service), how they encouraged barbaric dictatorships in South America (Pinochet, anyone?); not to mention the ridicule that the Falklands incident was.

No, I will not join that side.

Ant.

This all depends on who defines the center. Rather unnecessary labeling, I believe.

Dreadsox 09-25-2002 07:53 PM

Libertarian

I think people here would think I am conservative.
My college friends think I am a left of center.

It depends on the issue with me.

At times I find myself on the left and others on the right.

One thing I have picked up on here is that American politics and left and right is quite different from other countries.

This poll is simply where you would place yourself based on what YOU consider the center to be and which side of the fence YOU feel your probably on. Its not known who voted in the Poll or how you voted unless you write a response to the thread and state that you did vote and how you voted. No one has to worry about being labled because who voted and how they voted cannot be seen.

But heh, feel free to say or post anything that you want. Thanks to everyone that has voted and posted to the thread.

I think A lot of people are in the center. My point was if you HAD to pick which side of the center do you fall on. This question I realize will be very tough for independents to answer. If you don't know just guess. Just joking.

Interesting that although some have alleged that a secret plot exists to wipe conservatives out of FYM, the right-and-left split, as of now, is roughly 50-50.

Hmmmmmmm. Could it be that maybe, just maybe, no secret plot exists? Nahhhhhh... ;)

When you say 50/50 split...you do realize that only 15 people have responded to the poll?

HEHE Of course....are the counters in Florida? I suspect they may be.

U2Bama 09-25-2002 11:42 PM

Right of center.

martha 09-26-2002 12:20 AM

Proudly left, with all the contradictions and annoying habits included in that label.

brilliant!

you described everything with two sentances! thats every writers dream.

and to think that the democrats are "left of center" is rediculous. theyre all right wing, belonging to different companies and corporations. THATS the difference.

STING2 09-26-2002 01:19 AM

I thought someone would bring that point out. I understand to many people of different political views that the Democrats are not left of center at all. I was just using the usual Democrat-Republican thing to explain right of center/left of center to some that may have not been to familar with those terms. We often label things as liberal or conservitive, republican or democrat.

Zoomerang96 09-26-2002 02:48 AM

sorry sting2, i didnt mean to put you on the defensive. i sounded smart-assed the way i responded.

i understand perfectly well with what your saying, sorry for trying to act like a hero or something.
