I know I always like to include some flabbergasting statements about child abuse in my annual holiday statements. Fits right in.

Merry Christmas!

WTF????:huh::huh::huh:

Pearl 12-22-2010 07:36 PM

What...the...FUCK?

This is how he defends his actions? By normalizing pedophilia and child porn? Give me a break!

deep 12-22-2010 07:39 PM

I was really young,
but the Pope's and Polianski's fond memories of the 70s are quite different than mine.

“In the 1970s, paedophilia was theorised as something fully in conformity with man and even with children,” the Pope said.

The latest controversy comes as the German magazine Der Spiegel continues to investigate the Pope's role in allowing a known paedophile priest to work with children in the early 1980s.

.

who would want to be led by this man?

corianderstem 12-22-2010 08:27 PM

I read the article several times - I just figured I had to be misinterpreting what he was actually saying. I can't figure out what he's actually trying to say, because honestly, I don't actually think he's saying child porn is in any way okay.

He shouldn't really say ANYTHING about anything remotely connected to sexual abuse, considering how complicit and/or silent the church has been in years of abuse, but .... that's not actually what he's saying, right? Right???

:(

Edit, from deep's post above:

"“In the 1970s, paedophilia was theorised as something fully in conformity with man and even with children,” the Pope said."

No, really, Pope. What the hell are you actually trying to say, because surely you cannot mean what we think you mean. Right? Right????

ryancoke71 12-22-2010 08:33 PM

I have read it over and over too, and I can't figure out what the hell he is trying to say either. I do know that some priests that have taught me religious ed in university do not like this Pope.

*hangs Catholic head in shame!*

In assessing Benny's latest comments, I guess it depends on one's starting point and one's particular biases and opinions.

Mine is that Benedict is an evil old Nazi-supporting, child-abuse covering up sociopath, so I may be biased on this.

Pearl 12-22-2010 09:34 PM

Ugh, here's Bill Donohue's response to the criticism:

Quote:

Among those condemning the pope is Sinead O'Connor. "Exactly who held the theory that pedophilia was fully in conformity with man and with children? Please give us their names."
Catholic League president Bill Donohue answered O'Connor today:
You want names? Here they are: Michel Foucault, Jacques Derrida, Louis Althusser, Jean-Paul Satre, Simone de Beauvoir, André Glucksmann, Roland Barthes. All of these French intellectuals -- and there are many more -- signed a petition in 1977 demanding that all the laws on sex between adults and minors be stricken. Years earlier, in the U.S., Alfred Kinsey justified pedophilia, claiming that "the current hysteria over sex offenders" was detrimental to child development. So did his colleague, Wardell Pomeroy. Moreover, many other writers and activists have expressed a tolerance for pederasty that is extremely dangerous. They include Larry Kramer, Camille Paglia, Allen Ginsberg and John Money. And, of course, NAMBLA is expressly organized to further the cause of man-boy sex. So commonplace is this perversion that some scholars use the term "BLs" to refer to "Boy Lovers."
The Holy Father was not wrong about some Catholic theological circles getting caught up in this insanity. In the 1970s -- the pope was right about the decade -- under the auspices of the Catholic Theological Society, Anthony Kosnick's book Human Sexuality was published. Adopted by some seminaries at the time, it sought increased tolerance for every conceivable sexual deviancy. In other words, the pope got it right.

Hey, you know what else is detrmiental to child development?

corianderstem 12-22-2010 09:38 PM

I'm assuming there's more to back up the claim that Kinsey justified pedophilia - right or wrong though the thought about hysteria might be, that bit of quote doesn't exactly say "hey, pedophilia ain't so bad!"

A_Wanderer 12-22-2010 10:00 PM

In every country and every age, the priest has been hostile to Liberty.

He's saying because it wasn't looked upon as bad then, he felt it was OK to reinstate a priest who was a pedophile.

I'm not trying to justify anything, I'm just explaining why he's saying these things.

corianderstem 12-22-2010 10:26 PM

Oh, so he's not just oddly mentioning child porn in his Christmas message, he's offering an excuse.

Happy birthday, Jesus!

yeah, my christmas cards always read "merry christmas, fuck a baby" - it brings more joy to others than a simple happy new year.

Correct, he's not randomly saying "pedophilia was pretty chill in the 70s." He's saying "I gave my buddy a job despite his pedophilia because it was pretty chill in the 70s."

The Pope really has no effect on American Catholics.

Yeah, that struck me rather odd, too.

Benedict's so old that the 70's he's remembering took place BCE in Thebes.
