Napoleon Dynamite

I finally caught this movie today (after wanting to see it since it was released to select theaters, I could never get any of my buddies to make an hour or 2 trip to just see a movie). I imagined it would be funny, but I really had my expectations exceeded. It was QUITE humorous and quite entertaining. I really recommend you all go checkify it out and let me know what you think!!!

If you know nothing about the movie, check this stuff out then:

Napoleon Dynamite is a quirky teenager growing up in the remotes of Idaho with a love for dancing and the way of the ninja who's really just trying to understand his life while living with his Uncle Rico, whose shady business deals are just some of the things that make Napoleon's social life in small-town Idaho all the more difficult.

Post warning:
I admit that every and anything I said here is most likely biased because I know the actor who played Napoleon on a personal basis...

HeartlandGirl 07-24-2004 02:49 AM

I can't wait to see this.

ThatGuy 07-24-2004 03:04 AM

Weird. I know a guy who knows that guy.

Anyway, the guy I know also says it's very funny, but I suppose he's biased too.

kennerado 07-24-2004 07:52 AM

When I first saw a picture of that guy the look reminded me of a young Adam Clayton.

carrieluvv 07-24-2004 07:58 AM

we may travel 30 miles to see it...well 60 miles there and back

that is if it doesnt come to our local theater

carrieluvv 07-24-2004 08:04 AM

has anyone seen " SAVED" ?
that looked really good...

but they didnt play it here so I didnt get the "CHEcKIFY " it out.
( im gonna use that word) try to be super hip
im also gonna not eat today to try and be thin but that a whole nother thread....( oh WTF...i probably will eat! damnit..) ive got no guts!

hwo about AMERICAN SPLENDOR on DVD....see it..its very honest and maybe reminds me a bit of this napoleon dynamite

dandy 07-24-2004 09:08 AM

"be a winner
eat to get slimmer"

not u2's most poetic lines, but, hey, it's good advice.

I saw it last night. I don't think I even chuckled once and we left before it was over. I guess it's the kind of humor you have to be in the mood for. I will go so far as to say it was one of the most unfunny movies I have ever seen!

I have awful taste :(

I dont blame you for feeling that way, I thought I'd think the same thing before I saw it. I figured it would be the kind of movie you either loved or hated. How was the rest of the theater responding? People were virtually rolling in the aisles in the showing I went to. Then again, it's kind of a 'local' movie though (director & main star both went to school here), so I imagine the audiences would differ a little that way.

My opinion wasn't too far off from yours, joyful!

I did chuckle a few times though...but I am glad I saw it during a matinee, AND I was glad a friend decided not to go with me (she would have HATED it - and I would have been bitched out).

If it is any consolation, I did think of Mofo during the film, knowing what part of the country it was filmed in.:up:

cant wait for the movie

Angela Harlem 07-25-2004 08:13 AM

The guy on the poster posted (haha) reminded me of the pic of mofo fighting the velocoraptor. Or whatever it was.

I like non blockbuster movies. Which is good seeing as I live in one of the largest backwaters on the planet.

Now picture he and I in a snow covered Tokyo, quoting lines from our favorite Saturday Night Live sketches and movies. Good times, good times.

dustinafn 07-31-2004 05:21 PM

I saw the movie last week with a few friends, and I hafta say I enjoyed it quite a bit. It's got a certain bizarre charm and it's even kinda touching at times. One of those movies that makes you laugh in between cringing. If nothing else it's original and different, but it's more than that. Plus the last ten minutes rock.

"GOSH!"

:)

Popmartijn 07-31-2004 06:54 PM

Every time I see this thread, I have to think of Elvis Costello. He used this alias for a while (around the Blood & Chocolate album).

achtung_zoo 08-04-2004 01:12 AM

i haven't seen it yet but the previews look hilarious and i'm already quoting him from the bits that i did see.

IDIOT!

~LadyLemon~ 12-11-2004 11:10 AM

I finally saw this last night--the movie itself was ok, but the character of Napoleon is just fucking hysterical.

diamond 12-11-2004 12:14 PM

Mofo and I saw this about a month ago. We went to a really late night showing of it, so there weren't many people there, but everyone was cracking up. I was laughing so much--I loved it.

diamond 12-11-2004 01:54 PM

DrMusk 12-11-2004 02:06 PM

This movie was quite awful. A few funny parts here and there but it was a predominately disappointing film for me.

wolf Q 12-11-2004 10:45 PM

I thought that movie was hilarious! Of course I also have an odd sense of humor...

carrieluvv 12-12-2004 04:28 AM

DR MUSK? AWFUL?

I know ya meant AWFULLY FUNNY!

; )

I loved it man. my whole family does.....its a wholesome film

i didnt think wed ever see that little girl from andre again.
way to go to bring actors out of obscurity
uncle rico's use of polyester leisure wear is HOT

stammer476 12-12-2004 04:47 AM

Definately one of the funniest movies I've seen in a long time. You have to have a . . . um . . . special sense of humor to enjoy it, but it's definately worth watching.

diamond 12-12-2004 07:01 AM

i think most ppl loved it.
u like it or hate it.

u get the humor and appreciate or u don't.
its that simple.

LarryMullen's POPAngel 12-18-2004 01:59 PM

Finally saw it. It was so-so, but I was in the parking lot at the grocery store today and when some jerk pulled out in front of me I found myself muttering, "IDIOT!!!" just like dear ole Napoleon.

HelloAngel 12-22-2004 08:26 PM

I finally saw this tonight and laughed my ass off. I was crying at the end of it I had laughed so hard.

AvsGirl41 12-22-2004 10:04 PM

I saw it tonight. It was...interesting. It was funny, but it was really a collection of good one-liners.

That's definitely a better way to describe it.

Did anyone see him do the Top Ten on Letterman the other night?

Mr. BAW 12-27-2004 08:51 AM

We had a full-house on Xmas Eve...all the teens and e-20's were watching it in the family room (tri-level home)...all of the little ones, 3-6- were watching the movie through the stairway railing! it was an awesome sight and yes, I've heard the movie is very good!

bonosloveslave 01-26-2005 11:13 AM

We just watched it the other night - I think Kip was actually my favorite character.

One thing keeps nagging me though - is this supposed to be set in the 80's or did their hair/makeup for the extras just suck? It might have passed for early-mid 80's, but it's kind of odd that Kip would be so into chat rooms at that point. The high school kids looked pretty average (for how I would expect Idahoans to dress) until the dance - the 80's dresses were definitely out then - but the hair didn't match! Deb's fit for it, but not really any of the other kids. Any one know for sure the era this is supposed to be?

Oh, and what about playing the Backstreet Boys after the chick's speech? Another thing to say it is a more modern time? :scream:

HelloAngel 01-26-2005 11:43 AM

I think it's supposed to be modern day/present day... I dunno.

zorya 01-26-2005 01:08 PM

aaah! omg i friggin LOVE this movie.

it's pretty much one of my favorite movies by now...

sweet.

and yes the movie is set in present day. you can see at the beginning of the movie - the credits when it shows the guy who plays napoleon dynamite - his name is on a student card, it says 2004/2005 for the school year.

This movie is great! It's not for everybody but it is GREAT! I find myself thinking about it and giggling to myself several times a day.

"What are you gonna do today, Napoleon?"
"Whatever I feel like doing—GOSH!"
