I like Green Day.

Blink 182 makes me want to vomit.

A favorite concert memory was seeing MXPX, Cypress Hill, and The Offspring (that's the order they played) in 11th grade(?).

I think Green Day is the only band on that massive bill that I've ever seen live.

Linq is very expensive that weekend. $159 on 10/19, $359 on 10/20 and $599 on 10/21. (Checked Harrah's they are slightly cheaper but still $99, $269 and $529 for those 3 dates) Must be something big going on that weekend in Vegas, a fight maybe.
Drops to $37 for Monday 10/23.

Its again why I opted for tickets for a Wednesday show, knowing rooms (and flights) would be cheaper (plus figured getting tix in presale would potentially be easier).
My 3 night hotel stay from 10/24-10/27 all in including resort fees was less than $400.
Fuck this has set me off

any nice hostels nearby?

Not my cup of tea, so couldn't tell ya.

You could try airbnb. There are typically places available at Vdara and MGM Signature through Airbnb, which are right in the strip.

The other option is to just stay further away from the strip. There are a number of locals casino hotels that likely won't be as expensive, or just a regular old Courtyard Marriott or Holiday Inn type place.

Another piece of advice would be to check back often. Book something now so you don't get completely shut out, but make sure it's refundable.

I once had a trip planned, with flights purchased, on a weekend that a big fight was scheduled. Booked a place for way more than I normally would, but was able to switch to a significantly cheaper rate a few days before the trip.

I was going to say the same.
These hotels are trying to get top dollar right now because of that festival and expected crowd.
Very likely that nowhere near as many people as they hope are actually going to book rooms at a casino hotel who are going to that festival. Lots of the attendees probably local, others just booking a cheap hotel and not interested in the whole Vegas/casino thing. So prices will probably drop eventually.

my other suggestion here would be to look downtown.

golden gate, el cortez, the plaza, the d... you may find more reasonable rates.

downtown has it's pluses and minuses - the rooms at most of the places are perfectly fine - comparable more to a low end or low mid-tier place on the strip. exception being Circa - which is brand new and a little more higher end (and not doing as well as they had hoped, probably because it's downtown and higher end).

downtown is a little rowdier, and you could end up with a lot of noise bleed into your room - especially if you get a room facing Fremont Street. you'll also have to uber and or take the bus to get down to the strip for the show.

but the prices are better - both for hotels and for gambling.

Thanks heaps Headache.

I think I've settled on my itinerary now to book flights and accomodation.

14th, 15th or 16th October - Melbourne fly to Los Angeles
17th October - Los Angeles drive to Las Vegas through Mojave National Reserve (you've definitely all talked me out of going to see the actual tree, I hear there's plenty of Joshua trees here, just hopefully the fires are out)
17th-21st October - Stay in Las Vegas (and hopefully get a ticket to the show on the 18th or 21st)
22nd October - Las Vegas drive to Beaver and stay in Beaver overnight (splits the SLC drive into two days meaning I have a bit of scope to see things)
23rd-24th - Beaver drive to Salt Lake City and stay in Salt Lake City
25th-26th October - Salt Lake City fly to Seattle and stay in Seattle
27th-28th October - Seattle drive to Portland and stay in Portland
29th October - Portland fly to Los Angeles, see Nick Cave and stay in Los Angeles
30th October - fly home!

Looking like I'll be able to book all these flights for about $2,500 AUD which I'm pretty happy with. Just want to get one checked bag for each flight, which I'm hoping won't bump up the price too much. Going to try and stay in hostels mostly, maybe a nice hotel room here or there.

See you in Vegas!

I have like $300 AU I forgot to spend, so I need to trade 'em to an Aussie (or just remember to bring 'em whenever I go back...).

Cobbler, that’s going to be one hell of a trip. Excited for all of us that are going to Vegas.

Always good to stop for some Beaver in the middle of a trip.

the town definitely leans into the innuendo. There's a Mexican restaurant called Beaver Taco, and all of the truck stops sell "I love beaver" t-shirts.

There really isn't much in Beaver, cobbz except a couple truck stops and fast food places, you might rather stay St George or Cedar City which are quite a bit bigger, although after four days in Vegas, a quiet small town might be just what you are looking for.

Definitely try and drive over to Zion National Park if you can, its only about 30 miles east of I-15. Bryce Canyon is also relatively on the way, but an hour further east. Arches, Moab and Canyonlands are on the other side of the state near Colorado and would be quite a bit out of the way.

I picked Beaver literally only because it seems about half way between Vegas and SLC haha. Researching it seems like St George or Cedar City would be better for a tourist, but I also quite like the idea of doing something non-touristy like driving through and staying in a really small town. Is there anywhere else along the way that you'd recommend I stay? Would I be better off doing different length drives either side? So maybe doing 4+ hours one day and less the other? Might give me a bit more time in SLC. I've also heard SLC has a pretty huge college footy team? Is that season on? I'll definitely do Zion National Park

You can go see one of the old 360 stages somewhere thereabouts.
