Unfortunately this makes a lot of sense. “We have an incredible album, ‘Songs of Ascent’, but we’re not releasing it right now.”

Does this not suggest that they might want a more commercial/easy to translate to live energy album for Larry’s final tilt, rather than a cerebral and meditative album that won’t necessarily generate much buzz for a world tour? Optimists timeline below:

Songs of Larry’s Last Stand - March 2024
Larry’s massive final tour - June 2024 to December 2025 - Europe, US, ROW, Europe, US - final homecoming show in Dublin.
Songs of Ascent - June 2025 to keep the tour refreshed, or March 2026 to try and push it out to the 50th anniversary of the band before announcing Larry has left.

Bono, Edge, Adam announce their plans (continue, Adam leaves, B + E do soundtracks, retire, whatever).

Larry closing the door after 50 years is the second most Larry thing I’d expect.

The first being doing it right before because he DGAF about anyone’s expectations.
