If anyone needs a hard drive or thinks they might need one in the future, buy it NOW. The floods in Thailand have destroyed thousands of factories that manufacture computer parts, namely hard drives. Last week I worked on five laptops in one day that all had bad or failing drives. For students that will need a new one and their laptop is not under warranty (I check for them), I generally print out a product page from newegg.com to give them an idea of what they need and a reasonable price, since we do not service or sell parts for computers the college doesn't own. Normally I print out something like a 250GB 7200 RPM 2.5" SATA drive with 5-star rating for under $50. As of last week, pretty much everything I normally recommend is already out of stock and what's left was already over $120.
