Any thoughts on how to get into a computer I'm trying to restore?

When it get's to the log on page and I click on my name, it begins to log on but promptly changes to "logging off".
Wasn't that some virus a few years ago (an probably still around) that caused that?
I've tried F8 but I can't seem to bring up safe mode to see if I can run a virus scan.
(just trying to get this upgraded computer running for an online job I want to apply for.)

Hi Liesje,
Forgot I posted this. I actually turned it over to someone I found to reload XP Pro from a disc I purchased a year or so ago.
I will be picking it up this weekend sometime.
Thanks,

One thing you can do is pull the drive and add it to another computer with current AV software (Malewarebytes is a good one). Once the OS sees the drive scan it until everything is removed. You can then backup all your data before reloading the OS.

If the OS is damaged you at least still get your data.
