Cover the camera with your finger. Take a picture. Browse to the camera roll and select the image you just took.

There is no way to disable the background; this is the easiest work around.

To reverse this loss, one only needs to put the phone down and the signal strength will be restored. Reports are also circulating in the forums with owners reporting this anomaly and suggesting the use of case may inhibit this disturbance in the antenna. I updated my 3G to iOS 4 and lost the last 2 months worth of stuff (contacts, photos, texts, notes, Angry Birds scores, etc.)... This sucks and despite iTunes saying a backup was made, it was not.

Oh no. I guess I will not update mine.
