Converting WMV Format to DVD - Need help!

Maddy made a video for a school project that is due tomorrow. However, it's in WMV format, and when we burned it to DVD, it obviously didn't play. Apparently it needs to be converted to a different format first. Anyone have any information how to do this or what program we can use to accomplish this? Is there something free I can download?
