No. 1 -- Everyone in the audience will be happy ... Oprah will buy them their own house.

Although, Dave and Oprah had to tell the audience "IT WAS A JOKE" ??

Letterman Appears on Oprah's Talk Show
By Associated Press
Mon Sep 10, 10:41 PM

NEW YORK - David Letterman says the birth of his son, Harry, has made a "huge difference" in his life _ but the 3-year-old doesn't always get daddy's sense of humor.

"Mommy has to tell him a lot that I'm just teasing," Letterman said Monday on the season premiere of "The Oprah Winfrey Show" _ an appearance that generated interest because of the two stars' much-publicized rift.

It was also a rare appearance for Letterman, host of CBS' "Late Show With David Letterman," on someone else's show. Winfrey asked whether he's "interview-phobic."

"It's just that you know, when you have your own show, you have plenty of time to talk about whatever you want to talk about anyway," Letterman said.

Letterman, 60, said he struggles between using "patience or discipline" with Harry, his son with girlfriend Regina Lasko. Harry was placed on the "naughty chair" this weekend after misbehaving, he said.

"He's still there," Letterman joked.

He talked about his love for his home in Montana and how he was honored to have a communications building dedicated in his name at Indiana's Ball State University, his alma mater. He also showed family photos.

The show was taped at Madison Square Garden in Manhattan instead of the customary Harpo Studios in Chicago to mark the start of the show's 22nd season.

Winfrey, 53, said her relationship with Letterman had warmed. She showed footage of her office in which two photos of Winfrey and Letterman are among photos of Winfrey with John Travolta, Stevie Wonder, Nelson Mandela and her boyfriend, Stedman Graham.

In the midst of their rift, which lasted more than a decade, Letterman started keeping an "Oprah Log" as a gag on his show. He would record whether Winfrey had called that day to invite him to be her guest.

Winfrey said she believed Letterman's staff would contact her staff if he wanted to appear.

"I wanted to be asked, Oprah. Don't you understand that?" Letterman said, then opened the notebook to read: "`Day No. 20. 11/27/01. Oprah. Noprah.' It was humiliating."

Letterman frequently joked about Winfrey, and she rejected repeated offers to appear on his program. In 2003, she told Time magazine she wouldn't appear with him because she was "completely uncomfortable" as the target of Letterman's jokes.

Their reconciliation began in 2005 when Winfrey appeared on his CBS show. It was her first guest appearance with Letterman, though she twice appeared on his NBC show before he jumped networks in 1993.

I taped it, I still haven't watched it. I am envious of Oprah, I think Dave is so hot  :shifty: Please don't hurt me.

Harry is adorable, I saw his picture in Star Magazine this week.

Dave showed a picture of Harry, then one of him with Harry, and then one of the whole family (mother Regina). He said he'd be in trouble for it, LOL. Very cute! Funny to hear Dave talk about the 'naughty chair' :giggle:

And Mrs.S - I've always liked Dave. Remember going to Vegas in the 80s to catch the Anniversary show. Hubby would go to the lobby of the casino and page Larry 'Bud' Melman (RIP).

That naughty chair ... and Dave's reply "he's still there" (referring to his son not leaving that chair) :giggle:

Hurray for Larry

My favorite segment from Letterman's show was Thursday night's "Viewer Mail" ... oh my, so-ooo funny.

Oprah Chats Up Dave
Tue Sep 11, 8:39 AM

Oprah Winfrey got to turn the tables on David Letterman.

Making a rare appearance as an interviewee, the late-night host appeared on the 22nd season premiere of Winfrey's eponymous talk show Monday, his first visit to the syndicated chatfest, as the pair continued to distance themselves from the years-long, yet ultimately benign, feud that once clouded the airwaves.

Their rift started in the 1990s, when Letterman started an "Oprah Log" listing all the invitations he had received to be on her program. Every night, the tally was the same: zero.

"I wanted to be asked, Oprah," the Late Show personality told her today, opening the notebook he toted with him. "Don't you understand that? 'Day number 20, 11-27-01. Oprah. Noprah.' It was humiliating."

Winfrey, who then refused repeated requests to be a guest on the Late Show, saying Letterman's jokes made her "completely uncomfortable," explained she had figured his people would call her people if he wanted to be a guest on Oprah.

"Why didn't you just pick up the phone?" she asked.

The multimedia maven was the one who eventually waved the white flag, guesting on Letterman's show in 2005, an appearance that attracted about 13.5 million viewers, the program's highest rating since 1994 during the Nancy Kerrigan-Tonya Harding drama.

After their sit-down, Letterman then walked Winfrey down the street to the opening of the Broadway musical adaptation of The Color Purple, which she produced.

So now that they're all chummy, it was time for Winfrey to start asking the hard-hitting questions.

"So, you know, people call you interview-phobic," Winfrey said. "Is that true?"

"No, I don't like most things," Letterman replied. "When you have your own show, you have plenty of time to talk about whatever you want to talk about anyway, so you don't need to travel."

In response to an inquiry as to how fatherhood has changed him, Letterman said that son Harry, 3½, has made a "huge difference" in his life and that being a parent is "ideal" for him, but that the toddler doesn't always understand his daddy's sense of humor.

"Mommy has to tell him a lot that I'm just teasing," the 60-year-old funnyman said.

Parenting isn't always easy, though, Letterman continued. "It is the constant razor's edge—do you make your point with patience or discipline," he mused, adding that Harry was placed on the "naughty chair" over the weekend for misbehaving.

"He's still there," Letterman deadpanned.

In addition to the heart-to-heart that ensued at the WaMu Theater in Madison Square Garden, where Winfrey's Chicago-based show is on location this week, Letterman brought along one of his signature Top 10 lists, this one expounding on the reasons why he loves Oprah:

10. She smells great.

9. Without her, we would never have known that quack Dr. Phil.

8. She helped me start my wildly popular "D" magazine.

7. We're yoga buddies.

6. Oprah's incredibly busy, yet she still finds time to ignore my calls.

5. She agreed to validate my parking.

4. Taught me how to launder money in the Cayman Islands.

3. Any time I'm in Chicago, she lets me crash on her couch.

2. Oprah gave me my first postsurgery sponge bath.

1. She's giving everybody in today's audience a new house.

Letterman last granted a TV interview in 2002, to Ted Koppel's Nightline spinoff, Nightline Up Close.

Appearing on Good Morning America earlier Monday, Winfrey said she would try to make the famously private Letterman as comfortable as possible.

"I hear he's a little nervous," she said. "That's why he doesn't like to see these interviews. It's often true that people who are in control of the mike don't like being on the other side of it."

Meanwhile, the famously public Winfrey hosted a star-studded fundraiser for presidential candidate Barack Obama at her sprawling estate near Santa Barbara, Calif., on Saturday. Tickets cost $2,300 apiece, and the event brought in more than $3 million for the Illinois senator's campaign.

Stevie Wonder performed at the soiree, whose guests included Will Smith, Halle Berry, Jamie Foxx, Sidney Poitier, Forest Whitaker, Chris Rock, Cindy Crawford, Jimmy Connors, Linda Evans and Dennis Haysbert.

Well, I don't believe Dave was the least bit nervous when he recited this ... :D

Oh, Letterman. I used to lionize him when I first discovered him on NBC in my pre-teens. I asked my brothers, while they were watching a tape, when he'd next be on. They said every weekday, and I couldn't believe this great stuff would be on EVERY night. I used to tape it constantly and then Leno, too, when he took over the Tonight Show.

I enjoyed Larry Bud Melman say "Bite Me!" and Viewer Mail. Even the Top Ten list seemed better back then.

The switch to CBS must have come with awful writers. Maybe it's just my age, but, while I agree with Letterman's liberal politics (compared to Leno's soft racism and cheap nationalism, ready to pull for Bush's war and spreading hate toward the French in 2003), I find he's the most lazy talk show host out there. He gets paid, what, $26 million a year, and doesn't really even do anything. He repeats himself constantly and always does stuff with that boring East Asian convenience store owner.

Letterman's okay once in a while, but I can't watch him generally unless it's for the guest.

He has way better musical acts, though -- much better than Leno's usual Top 40 selection.

I loved when Hilton was on Letterman. When Hilton was on Larry King, that kiss ass gave her the fuckin lamest questions. Paris Hilton is such a fuckin' twit. I'm glad Dave made her squirm. I'm pretty sure that Dave knew that if a regular schmo did what Paris did, they would've faced stiffer penalties. I'm not a big fan of Dave's anymore, but this interview was one of his better moments.
Bottom Line: You don't tell Dave that you don't want to answer anymore questions about a certain subject. That'll just give him more incentive to needle you. I'm pretty sure she'll never be on the show again, unless Dave is bored and wants to bust her skinny ass again.

http://www.deadlinehollywooddaily.com/dave-opens-own-wallet-to-pay-his-staff/

I've just learned that David Letterman and his producers yesterday morning announced to his Late Show staff that they will be paid through the end of the year even though the show isn't on the air during the writers strike."Dave's not doing this to get good press, which is why it hasn't been reported for almost two days," a source tells me. "This is really significant because, as opposed to all of the other shows, this money comes out of Dave's own pocket. When Late Show stopped making new episodes last week, CBS ceased paying Letterman's production company on November 5th. And, in case you were wondering, Dave owns Late Show while Jay does not own The Tonight Show as Johnny Carson did. (FYI, earlier this month, a news report claimed Jon Stewart had made a similar offer to pay his staff through the holidays, but then his rep said it was untrue.)

Yes, Worldwide Pants employees are getting paid. However, most of the technical crew for the Late Show and Late Late Show are CBS employees, some of which are non-staff but per diem, even though they work on regular basis. These employees (at least in Los Angeles) have been on the street since day 1 of the strike. CBS does not want to pay them. They're like the bastard child nobody wants to claim."

Just a reminder that striking Late Show writers Eric Stangel, Justin Stangel, Bill Scheft, Steve Young, Matt Roberts, Tom Ruprecht, Jeremy Weiner, Lee Ellenberg, Joe Grossman and Bob Borden have begun a blog about the writers walkout.
