That guy who plotted to kidnap Harry escaped

Letterman plot escapee still at large

By MATT GOURAS, Associated Press Writer 21 minutes ago

An inmate once accused of plotting to kidnap David Letterman's young son remained missing Monday after fleeing with another convict from a prison ranch.

Authorities searched by helicopter after the pair fled in a prison truck Friday.

A Letterman spokesman, Tom Keaney, would not say whether the prison break would change any plans the talk show host may have to spend time on his 2,700-acre Montana ranch about a three-hour drive north of the prison.

"I never comment on David's private life," Keaney said.

Authorities began looking for Kelly A. Frank, 45, and William J. Willcutt, 22, the day they disappeared from a ranch operated by the Montana State Prison. The search has grown more tense, with indications that accomplices may have stashed weapons and other provisions for the two in the mountainous terrain.

Frank was arrested in 2005 on allegations he crafted a plan to kidnap Letterman's son, now 3 1/2, and the boy's nanny for a $5 million ransom. A charge of solicitation to kidnap was dropped in return for his guilty pleas to other charges, including felony theft and misdemeanor obstruction.

Frank worked as a painter at Letterman's ranch and received a 10-year prison sentence for overcharging him. At the time of his arrest, Frank was on supervised release for a 1998 conviction for stalking and intimidating a woman.

Willcutt was convicted of burglary.

Mahoney said the Department of Homeland Security provided a Black Hawk helicopter for the search, with about 15 people on the ground Monday using all-terrain vehicles and a dog.

The two inmates were working on the prison ranch as part of a rehabilitation program. They were on a crew that moves irrigation pipe. Officials believe they took off Friday afternoon in the ranch's 1965 pickup truck, recovered within hours.

Willcutt, who had a parole hearing earlier this year, lived in a prison work dormitory. Frank, eligible for parole in three months, lived within the prison.

Fugitive linked to David Letterman nabbed in Montana

David Letterman and his family can rest easy -- the man once accused of plotting to kidnap Letterman's son was recaptured Wednesday, five days after breaking out of Montana State Prison. Kelly Frank was arrested along a highway in northwestern Montana, Lake County Sheriff Lucky Larson said. Another man who escaped with Frank remained at large. Frank, 45, and William Willcutt, 22, fled the the prison near Dear Lake -- which apparently is near pretty much nothing -- on Friday.

Frank, who had worked as a painter on Letterman's 2,700-acre ranch, was arrested in 2005 on claims he had planned to kidnap Harry Letterman and the boy's nanny for a $5 million ransom. A charge of solicitation to kidnap was dropped in return for pleas of guilty to other charges.

Did anyone happen to hear where David Letterman is going to be on Monday, Sept. 10th ??

Oh he's still gonna be in New York ... just at a different studio. :hmm:

Letterman will be a guest on "The Oprah Winfrey Show"

Oprah's actually having her show done in New York next week to 'kick-off' her new season.

I already do. She had a new episode on Tuesday with Bill Clinton. But the season officially kicks off on Monday with Letterman. :D

Yeah, I know.

(I'll share the following since I live near Oprah's studio)

You won't believe how many Chicagoans are so upset that Oprah is opening the new season in New York.
There were people standing outside of her studio on Labor Day and they were crying because the studio doors were closed to the public now until her return to Chicago. :uhoh:

:hmm: I can understand people might be disappointed ... but, actual crying ?? Totally ridiculous.

But the Clinton interview had to be filmed in Chicago, and within the last few days. It was her studio after all... And those Chicagoans should get over it. They have Oprah all year long!

Agree with you, totally ... but most Chicagoans were not aware of Clinton's appearance. There were only a small amount of people from the general public that might have ended up in the studio with tickets. Most were people from Clinton's presidential campaign organization (for Hillary) ... at least that's what was mentioned when I saw those people who were crying on the street on Labor Day. They probably knew they couldn't get tickets to her show until AFTER she came back from NY. :tsk:

Yeah, that's true ... but they are so-ooo obsessed with her.

You know, the same thing would happen if Leno, O'Brien or Letterman decided to leave for Chicago.

How would those New Yorkers feel ... if that happened ??

Although, not about Letterman's 'Late Night Show' ... still here's the latest on Letterman, himself. :applaud:

Letterman Cheered at Alma Mater Ceremony
By CHARLES WILSON, Associated Press Writer
Fri Sep 7, 8:45 PM

MUNCIE, Ind. - David Letterman says it will be convenient having a building named after him at his alma mater. "Forget your name _ just check the building," he said. That was part of a Top-10 list the talk-show host and Ball State University graduate read Friday during the dedication ceremony for the David Letterman Communication and Media Building.

Thousands of Ball State students and others turned out for the ceremony, with the chant "We want Dave! We want Dave!" frequently coming from the crowd that, amid intermittent rain, spilled along the sidewalks and street running in front of the building.

Letterman was joined by his four-year-old son, Harry, and mother, Dorothy, for the ceremony, during which he asked the crowd whether he still needed to wear his name badge.

The Letterman Building, which has been used since fall semester classes started a few weeks ago, is much snazzier than the facilities Letterman had as a Ball State student in the 1960s when he was a disc jockey for WBST-FM.

The 75,000 square-foot building includes studio and office space and is open to students 24 hours a day. It features a $1 million production complex with five surround-sound editing suites and two surround-sound recording studios.

Letterman several years ago had a running gag on his show about Ball State naming its football stadium for him and once joked that the school had denied him an honorary degree because the one it had given him was pretty much honorary itself.

Ball State has had a Letterman Scholarship since 1985 for students in the Department of Telecommunications, which has a wall plaque from Letterman dedicated to "all 'C' students before and after me!"

Ball State President Jo Ann Gora said the idea to name the building for Letterman first was discussed among school trustees about a year ago, but they had to persuade him to accept the honor because he didn't want the attention.

Letterman said during Friday's ceremony that his son seemed unimpressed when his father's name was mentioned.

"I hope one day it will mean something to my son that his dad has his name on a building," Letterman said. "And who knows, maybe it will help him impress girls."

I always love to watch David Letterman !! His segment on Oprah was hilarious.

Letterman told Oprah that the New Yorkers were thrilled that she was coming to New York ... then he said
"Just look what they did to the Statue of Liberty" ... and next everyone sees Oprah's face on the Statue Of Liberty.
