Gonna go see this opening night so I can write a review for it for my school's newspaper. Hope it doesn't disappoint!

Another awesome caveat here... the new Star Trek trailer. Hell yes.

Y'know, I can't stand the fact that the Bond collection dvds are grouped so randomly. I want to buy my Connery Bond films without having to get them all separately and without having to get ones that I don't want. :grumpy:

I think the overall consensus from the critics is that it's still a very good entry in the series...just not on par with Casino Royale. I'm sure it'll kick ass. It's BOND. I'm there on Friday.

not seen it yet, might see it soon.

I really enjoyed Casino Royale, it was full of action and I still find Daniel a refreshing new Bond.

But, watching him being interviewed, he either hates them or hates interviews that are not very serious - I've seen him nearly want to get up and walk out on interviews that are not serious. Its a bit  to watch! scary man! :D

I still say Rhona Mitra should be in the next Bond.

I don't carry that same certainty unfortunately. Just because "It's BOND" doesn't really mean all that much to me, considering a good half of the entire series thus far has been kinda shitty, you know?

Ebert gave it two stars. Ouch.

Quantum of Solace :: rogerebert.com :: Reviews

Considering how many elements were already removed from the Bond we know in Casino Royale (which was still great), stripping it even further probably isn't a good move.

I can't really say I'm looking forward to this any more, and would wait for the second run theatre if it wasn't for the Watchmen trailer.

Another review, local magazine. 4/5 stars this time, only one or two minor gripes on the story/scenario.

I saw it at midnight last night.

I thought it was very good. It didn't blow me away the way Casino Royale did, but it was still well done. It was a much more serious Bond, even moreso than Casino Royale, and the ending was kind of anti-climactic compared to Casino Royale, but then it'd be hard to top CR, IMO.

There is an awesome throwback to a scene in Goldfinger.

Also I didn't like the opening Jack White-Alicia Keys duet. I liked the rhythm of the song, but I did not like their singing at all. Though, I've never been a fan of Alicia Keys anyway, she sounds like she's always yelling but whatever

I'll be glad to discuss it at some point when more have seen it, I don't want to provide any spoilers.

If I give Casino Royale 5/5, I'd give Quantum of Solace 3/5.

Daniel Craig.
With that said, I'm so pumped to watch this. I thought Casino Royale was pretty sweet. And yes, to those who said Daniel is a refreshing new Bond, I completely agree.
The trailers look awesome, but hey, often times trailers take away the adrenaline that one can experience truly from watching the film. :|
I don't care much for the reviews that denote the film. Either way, it looks enjoyable and I know I'm going to enjoy it. No matter what. :)

I'm leaving to go to this in about an hour. I'm wearing all black and I have a pint of rum ready to pour into my Wild Cherry Pepsi. I'm pumped.

Booze + Popcorn + James Bond = FUN.

Yeah, those fonts were crazy yo!

And Camille has moved into my Top 5 Bond girls of all-time list. Mucho caliente. And she can handle herself in a fight, too. This is what life is all about.

Wow. Consider me very impressed. I feel that the only thing Casino Royale has over this film is Vesper, and the emotional presence of her character. Otherwise, this outdoes it in terms of action (save for CR's opening jumper chase), and looks a hell of a lot better.

Marc Forster unfortunately has become some kind of punching bag for critics, but I found his images to bear a style I don't think I've ever seen before in a Bond film. That moment after the opera fiasco when he's face to face with Greene and his cohorts? There's this image of the brown and white room with the solitary figure of Bond on one side, his enemies on the other, almost in silhouette...I nearly gasped in my seat.

The action scenes were totally top-notch. The scaffolding fight? Are you fucking kidding me? Original and intense. The speedboat chase wasn't necessarily better than what I've seen before, but I love how they dropped the sound at the end. Chilling. The plane duel was very well done, with a great payoff, and of course that apocalyptic hotel battle at the end.

I loved the modern architecture in the various locations, and how they were shot. Also, I felt Forster really captured an atmosphere in Bolivia. You could feel the sweat. Okay the poor people at the pump was a bit of overkill, but there were some great cutaway and establishing shots that really put me there.

I also thought Olga was very good. While not as charming or alluring as Eva Green (who is?), but I thought she sold her character's tragic past very well, as well as that catatonic thing she did towards the end.

Fantastic final shot, too.

I still can't believe how much I liked this.

I'm glad you liked it Laz. I too was pretty surprised by how much I liked it. It's definitely a film that will only grow in stature as it ages I think. I'm glad I'll be seeing it again in a couple weeks.

*kind of spoiler alert*

I agree with pretty much everything you said Laz, it was an excellent film. My main complaint would be that it didn't set itself apart from other spy/action movies as a Bond film. I don't recall any "Bond, James Bond"s, they saved the gun-barrel thing for the very end, there was only that one reference to a shaken vodka martini, there was no Q division, and it was VERY serious. Yes I know that stuff can get hokey, but that's what makes Bond Bond, and sets it apart from Bourne or something like that.

It was still an awesome movie. The scene with Felix in the bar was great, and I really think my favorite part of the movie was when he was holding Mathis in his arms. It was different because he was showing compassion for a man, a friend, you don't always see that from Bond, and then he turns right around and tosses him in the dumpster.

I still want to see it several more times in the theater

Yeah, what I feel kept this separate from the Bourne films was the class of the whole thing. That scene where Bond refuses to stay at that cheap hotel, and takes them to that ritzy place--that's the series right there. I don't need to see anything else. Also, Bourne to me is even more of a blunt instrument--all the high tech warfare going on in those films is more directed against him than used in his service; I think his actions in that trilogy are more about evasion and using available materials/situations to help himself. And there's certainly a lot of that in this film as Bond's "gone rogue", but that whole opera scene is too grandiose (not the opera itself, but Bond's method for revealing the cabal) for Bourne.

Hopefully in future installments it can lighten up a little, and veer a little bit towards the fun elements. I imagine they will, because this certainly seemed to be closing the book on the personal vendetta/emotional baggage part of the story.

Still haven't seen this yet....probably will Wednesday or Thursday. I'm glad to see that those who were hesitant about it turned out to be impressed.
