Now they are in Canada. They protested some play in Toronto and are now on the way to Winnipeg to protest the funeral of Tim McClean, the young victim of the Greyhound murderer. I live in Winnipeg and I will confront them at the funeral. As much as I feel like taking a baseball bat to the whole lot of them I know this would be wrong...however a good old fashioned egging I believe would be alright - it's non-violent but really messy. I'm buying at least two dozen eggs and showing up at the funeral. These people make me want to puke.

I always want to believe that the Westboro Baptist Church are the biggest trolls of our time, just saying the most offensive things possible to rile people up and have a laugh; it's the only way I can make sense of what they do.

As with all things, given the amount of outrage they cause, it surprises me someone hasn't off'd them yet. I'd think someone would stand by the line 'all that is required for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing'. That said, while I don't condone killing, it surprises me greatly that noone tries to impede them in any way. My sincerest hope is that the Canadian border agents search their vehicles and/or luggage so thoroughly that they're detained at the border and miss the event. Also, that they're charged with trespassing and disturbing the peace, and denied further entry to Canada. If you 'hate' our "rebel nation" so much, then don't fucking come here, dumb motherfuckers.

Update on the situation:

Earlier this week, the Westboro Baptist Church - an organization branded as a hate group and infamous for protesting the funerals of slain U.S. soldiers - announced they would picket Mr. McLean's funeral to let Canadians know that his decapitation was God's response to Canadian policies enabling abortion, homosexuality and adultery.

But Shirley Phelps-Roper, daughter of church's founder, Fred Phelps, said a small group of protesters was stopped at the Canada-U.S. border on Thursday afternoon.

"They won't let us in, but we have a group that will cross in another spot," she said. "They'll have to strip search everyone who crosses that border or they won't know who we are. They'll have to see the WBC (Westboro Baptist Church) tattoo on our butts."

I hope they are arrested for violating Canadian hate speech laws. After all, if they're going to exist, they might as well be used against these bigots.

I can't really see how, because the relevant statute says:

319. (1) Every one who, by communicating statements in any public place, incites hatred against any identifiable group where such incitement is likely to lead to a breach of the peace is guilty of

(b) an offence punishable on summary conviction.

I am not sure how you could come up with a plausible argument that they are promoting hatred against an identifiable group.

Exactly, how was his way of life "filthy?" He seemed like a normal young man, to me. And Tim, certainly did not pick up a knife and stab anyone to death.

Tim McLean was the victim of a violent and ghastly attack on a Greyhound Bus last week by a random assailant. There is another thread here discussing the circumstances surrounding his death.
But somehow in the disturbed minds of these Westboro hatemongers, they believe his death was a result of God punishing Canada for our views on abortion, homosexuality and adultery.

There was a similar cult (although I will say that nobody is as bad as the Phelps clan, they certainly did approach their level of offensiveness) that used to show up at my old university (and, to give you an idea, they were the group that apparently drove Andrea Yates insane years later), and I always chuckled over the fact that they only showed up on sunny and warm days, never once showing up on an overcast or rainy day, and certainly never during the several months of winter we get.

They certainly did give new meaning to the term "fair weather Christians."
