Break from Presidential norms

Vanity Fair

More than six months after taking office, President Joe Biden is finally doing what he probably should’ve done earlier: Booting Donald Trump’s political appointees from their posts on military advisory boards. The White House on Wednesday said it had sent letters to Trump appointees to the Board of Visitors for the Air Force, Military, and Naval Academies, including prominent allies of the former president like Kellyanne Conway and Sean Spicer, requesting that they resign or be dismissed.

Though some of the appointees, like Spicer and retired General H.R. McMaster, have military experience (Spicer is in the Navy Reserve), some of them have more dubious qualifications, and were installed in their roles in a flurry in the final days of the Trump presidency. The Pentagon already moved to block outrageously political picks like Corey Lewandowski, Trump’s 2016 campaign manager, and David Bossie, his deputy campaign manager, from their advisory positions. Now, the administration is ousting several others, who reacted with predictable outrage: Spicer vowed not to resign and to sue the Biden administration, and Conway, in a statement posted to Twitter, also refused to resign and—hilariously—accused Biden of committing a “break from presidential norms.”

https://twitter.com/KellyannePolls/status/1435702026458083328

“I’m not resigning,” Conway wrote, “but you should.”

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez shot back on Twitter: “A predictable, if not unfortunate, outcome. Clinging onto vestiges of power against the people’s will is kind of your /Trump’s / the GOP’s thing. When you’re fired, don’t let the fascist victim complex hit you on the way out.”

It goes without saying that allies of Trump—the guy who, among other things, instigated an attack on the United States government—accusing someone else of violating presidential norms is beyond absurd, as White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki pointed out Thursday morning. “There are some people on these boards who have supported or stood by silently while their former boss supported an insurrection,” she told CNN’s John Berman. “That’s really not okay with us.”

It’s a fair point, but one that didn’t exactly resonate with Trump appointees like Sebastian Gorka, who, when asked by Politico if he had received a request to resign from his (wholly undeserved) position on the National Security Education Board, replied by text: “Hey CuckBoy go lick some Democrat’s boots.”

Melania Trump's former spokeswoman, who also served as one of President Donald Trump's press secretaries, is slated to release a memoir of her time in the White House that sources suggest has plenty to reveal.

Stephanie Grisham's I'll Take Your Questions Now — a reference to how she controversially chose not to give any televised press briefings — will be published on Oct. 5.

Subtitled "What I Saw in the Trump White House," the book includes "a lot of stuff that has never been heard before," one source close to the project tells PEOPLE.

"She knows where all the bodies are buried and she has a shovel," the source says, calling the book "a memoir of her time in the White House in the unusual position of being the only person to serve both the president and the first lady at the same time."

"Anyone you've ever heard of in the Trump orbit is in this book," the source says.

I’m not sure what’s so wrong about “get that sellout piece of shit out of here.” I think it’s fair for black people to perceive black republicans as sellouts and that’s not on the same radar as a woman wearing a gorilla mask throwing stuff at a black man (which is shameful).

Whenever a random unelected white liberal does a racism, it absolves Trump and every Republican of their racisms.

Supporting Mandace Owens means you can not be racist. It's in the bible.

Daily Beast

The esteemed hosts and pundits of Fox News absolutely lost their minds on Thursday night after President Joe Biden announced that all federal employees must get fully vaccinated within 75 days.

According to a report from CNN, the hours after Biden’s speech were full of incandescent fury in Fox coverage, with its website banners screaming “BIDEN DECLARES WAR ON MILLIONS OF AMERICANS” and “FULL TOTALITARIAN.” One of the weirdest attacks came from podcast host Matt Walsh during an appearance on Tucker Carlson Tonight, who said: “We had to elect this rotting bag of oatmeal to get a real tyrant... Maybe this, in the end, is a good thing, in the sense that it’s a time for choosing for Americans... Are we going to comply and lie down to this, or are we finally going to stand up and say, ‘You know what, it’s not gonna happen.’”

As Biden pointed out during his address, Fox News itself has made employees reveal their vaccination status to the company and is making all unvaccinated staff wear a mask and distance from others when working on site.

Mmhm. Translation of their freakout: "Oh, shit, Biden called us out on national TV and further exposed our lies and hypocrisy! Distraction time!"

is it just me, or is the commemoration of this 20th anniversary much bigger than the 10th was?

Probably just you, since the 10th anniversary was the opening of the memorial in NYC

I didn't see any of the tv coverage of the ceremonies because I was at a local ceremony.

Saw a photo on Instagram of the Bidens Obamas and Clintons, I assume at the WTC site. Trump is supposed to visit there later, and actually decided to put out a video today criticizing Biden for Afghanistan. Classy as always.

Of course let's recall the classless indecent comments Trump made in NYC on and after 9/11. No dignity, no respect, no shame.

(CNN)Former President George W. Bush called on Americans Saturday to confront domestic violent extremists, comparing them to violent extremists abroad and warning that they are "children of the same foul spirit."

In a speech marking the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, Bush said the US has seen "growing evidence that the dangers to our country can come not only across borders, but from violence that gathers within."

"There is little cultural overlap between violent extremists abroad and violent extremists at home," Bush said. "But in their disdain for pluralism, in their disregard for human life, in their determination to defile national symbols, they are children of the same foul spirit."

"And it is our continuing duty to confront them," he added.

i enjoyed this writeup about it from yesterday:

Quote:
This Week in Schadenfreude
There's a study that's getting a lot of attention right now, particularly on social media, which purports to show that 85% of men who take Ivermectin in high doses (i.e., the doses needed to "cure" COVID-19) suffer some sort of infertility or erectile dysfunction. Quite a few readers sent it in as a possible schadenfreude item. And it's certainly tempting to write about a real, live example of Darwinism in action. However, the story was just a bit too good, especially since ivermectin is a legitimate treatment for other conditions (like, say, schistosomiasis, if you happen to be someone who likes to walk like an Egyptian). A close look at the study itself reveals some red flags, like that it was published in a "scientific" journal that even a historian can tell is dubious, and that it had a sample size of...37 people. Ah, well. That's why we fact-check, especially when something doesn't pass the smell test.

And so, we will go with this item about Donald Trump getting back to his boxing roots. No, he's not going to get punched, nor did he ever lace up gloves. Back when he was a remarkably incompetent casino owner, he hosted and/or promoted several prizefights. Those are the roots in question. What he will be doing tomorrow—as noted above, the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks—is serving as commentator for four boxing matches on Fite TV pay-per-view.

So, where is the schadenfreude? It's not in the commentating, per se. If Barack Obama decided to take a turn calling an NCAA Tournament basketball game, or George W. Bush dropped in on the Texas Rangers' broadcast booth, we wouldn't say "boo," even if it was on a kinda tacky day for frivolity. No, the schadenfreude comes in because everything about this boxing event is, to be blunt, pathetic.

To start, it's not a prizefight. Heck, it's arguably not even a professional boxing match, since the two headliners (and most of the folks on the undercards) are long retired. Those two headliners are Evander Holyfield, a former heavyweight champ who is now 58 years old and who hasn't won a fight since May of 2011, and Vítor Belfort, a former MMA champ who is now 44 years old and who was forced into retirement after winning just two of his last seven matches (with the last of those wins coming in 2017). There are some sports—golf, bowling, sometimes tennis—where the folks who have aged out of the regular tour can still put on a decent, competitive show. But this is boxing, which is about strength, stamina, and reflexes. Neither of these two men is capable of mounting even a poor facsimile of a boxing match. In fact, they are putting themselves at no small risk of being killed or seriously injured. A 20-year-old can usually take it on the chin and be ok, but there's a reason that none of the major boxing commissions will sanction a fight involving a boxer who is AARP eligible.

And it's not just the fight itself that is a sad joke. Because California wouldn't touch something like this with a 10-foot pole (nor would Nevada or New York, among others), the promoters had to move the event from a top-tier venue (Staples Center in Los Angeles) to a third-tier venue (Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, FL). That change of venue came after boxer Oscar de la Hoya, who is a decade younger than Holyfield, was forced to bail out due to COVID. In addition, Fite TV is a bottom-feeder operation, the OANN of sports networks, which saw its chance to get a bunch of publicity by throwing a bunch of money at Trump. Oh, and Trump isn't actually going to be the main commentator; he and his son Donald Jr. are going to be shunted off to an alternate feed that, as far as we know, won't be called the "MAGA feed," but might as well be.

In short, being involved with something like this is humiliating. This is Bobby Riggs allowing himself to be thrashed on national TV by Billie Jean King. This is Nicolas Cage cranking out direct-to-video movies because he ran up huge debts and the A-list roles dried up. This is Orson Welles drunkenly shilling a second-rate wine brand. This is The Romantics, still touring county fairs 40 years after their one enduring hit, performing "What I Like About You" and a whole bunch of songs that aren't "What I Like About You."

Trump knows it's humiliating, which is why he's made a big point of telling anyone and everyone how much money he's being paid. But he's doing it nonetheless. Either he's starved for attention, or he's strapped for cash. Maybe it is both. Whatever it is, there's certainly some schadenfreude in seeing the Donalds Trump perform the sporting world's equivalent of starring in the latest Sharknado film. (Z)

Donnie visited a fire station and police station in NYC yesterday. Couldn't even stop talking about Biden and politics and himself there on a day of mourning and reflection. I read that he was invited to the WTC ceremony, but declined. Of course he did.

Does that include 1/6/21? Some sort of exemption occurred that day?
