Many of these folks are whipping themselves up into a frenzy over communism/socialism already. It’s also easy to imagine someone thinking “normally, I’d obey the law; but I can stand aside and let an avowed socialist take the office.”
It’s difficult to make that case against moderate Biden. The socialism stuff would stick more, and the down ballot races would have been a disaster.
I’m just saying it could be a whole lot worse. And it’s pretty bad right now.
I was in agreement with you on this point for a long time, and I do think an actual socialist could have turned some moderates/suburban types away from voting for the democratic nominee which may or may not have made a difference in the election. I also have no desire to get into a debate with anyone over that part in case someone decides they'd like to litigate it.

Your stupid Aunt won't see it on her Facebook feed anymore. So the mainstream radicalization will slow, which is incredibly important. Yes, Fox and right wing talk radio still exists - but honestly Facebook is a bigger deal, at least on QAnon.
The militia and paramilitary types are going to go back into hiding. They know the heat will be on in the short term. But I absolutely feel that we're going to see another Oklahoma City type attack at some point.

There's a car fire underneath 395 by the Whole Foods in Navy Yard - which for those who don't know is just a few blocks south of The Capitol complex. There's a decent sized homeless encampment right there.
A few congresspersons live above that Whole Foods, at least one of which would be described as "high profile."
I imagine this is why the capitol has gone under lockdown moments ago. It's likely just coincidence but hey, 2021 right?

I agree we will see some of this militia stuff go back to the outskirts with Biden taking over. They won’t have free reign like they did under Trump and now being labeled terrorists they will have targets on their backs from law enforcement

I can respect that different people would vote in different ways with a candidate somewhere else on the political scale. But to me, this is all Trump. If people are showing up with zipties and explosives for Biden, it’s not like they’re showing up with nuclear bombs for Bernie. They’re fighting Clinton pizzeria pedophilia rings, and the fact that their fuhrer has been deposed is all that matters.
This is really key.
It's hard to regulate and oversee true militias (I am talking about guys - because it's overwhelmingly guys) who often have some military or police training in their history, who are willing to live off the grid or out in the country on large parcels of land storing their weapons, doing their training simulations, etc. This, while currently probably poses a greater risk to the US itself than foreign terrorists in some shithole cave, is still a small number of people and due to their disciplined approach and screening, is hard to grow in size in a material way.
What IS able to spread like forest fire to every corner of the country, including stupid aunts, uncles, parents, coworkers is the QAnon and related nonsense that has been readily disseminated on Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, Parler, chain e-mails (do people still send those?) and similar social media. This has drawn in all manner of morons out, most of them are neither intelligent enough nor anywhere near capable enough physically to fight or cause violent disturbances on a mass scale. You might see the one off terrible shooting incidents and so on but this crowd is not occupying government buildings, obtaining floor plans, marching on the Capitol or anything of the sort. They are just caught up in the euphoria of it and they have totally dissociated from anything resembling reality. They stated with Fox News, escalated to OANN/Newsmax and then onward to the armpits of the internet. If you cut out all the stuff except the stuff you can't like cable TV, you should be able to moderate the hysteria. You'll never totally control it because of the dark web, but let's be honest 9 times out of 10 if we all think of that one racist/unhinged aunt or uncle, they barely know how to send photos via text messages nevermind uncovering dark web domains.
This crackdown + a return to normalcy over the next 6-12 months when people can once again start returning to work, seeing their families, go to barbecues this summer and vacations, that sort of stuff takes over your everyday life and sitting your ass in front of a computer reading posts from lunatics takes a back seat.

Agree with this and would add that there needs to be accountability and consequences to these actions over the last four years plus early January.
Allowing armed men to storm the Michigan capital without any fear of punishment most likely contributed to what we saw on the 6th.
As you said most of these people get caught up in the delusion and talk a lot of shit (and smear it in our capital), but 95% do not think they’d end up getting arrested or a visit from the FBI. That reality will crush their bullshit pretty quick.
Of course not all will come back. The need to blame others is a difficult mindset to free yourself from. Cause the truth is hard, we are responsible for our actions.
As you said most of these militia types know they are up to know good and therefore don’t want a lot of attention until they deem it’s appropriate to act. Let them live in their cabins and let’s try to restore society as a kinder, gentler place for the vast majority of us

WASHINGTON — The White House released the report on Monday of the presidential 1776 Commission, a sweeping attack on liberal thought and activism that calls for a “patriotic education,” defends America’s founding against charges that it was tainted by slavery and likens progressivism to fascism.
President Donald Trump formed the 18-member commission — which includes no professional historians but a number of conservative activists, politicians and intellectuals — in the heat of his reelection campaign in September, as he cast himself as a defender of traditional American heritage against “radical” liberals. Not previously known for his interest in American history or education, Trump insisted that the nation’s schools had been infiltrated by anti-American thought and required a new “pro-American” curriculum.
The commission formed part of Trump’s larger response to the anti-racism protests, some of them violent, that followed the killing in May of George Floyd, a Black man, by a white police officer in Minneapolis.
In his remarks at the National Archives announcing the commission’s formation, Trump said that “the left-wing rioting and mayhem are the direct result of decades of left-wing indoctrination in our schools.”
The commission’s report charges, in terms quickly derided by many mainstream historians, that Americans are being indoctrinated with a false critique of the nation’s founding and identity, including the role of slavery in its history.
“Historical revisionism that tramples honest scholarship and historical truth, shames Americans by highlighting only the sins of their ancestors, and teaches claims of systemic racism that can only be eliminated by more discrimination, is an ideology intended to manipulate opinions more than educate minds,” the report says.
The report drew intense criticism from historians, some of whom noted that the commission, while stocked with conservative educators, did not include a single professional historian of the United States.
James Grossman, executive director of the American Historical Association, said the report was not a work of history, but “cynical politics.”
“This report skillfully weaves together myths, distortions, deliberate silences, and both blatant and subtle misreading of evidence to create a narrative and an argument that few respectable professional historians, even across a wide interpretive spectrum, would consider plausible, never mind convincing,” he said.
“They’re using something they call history to stoke culture wars,” he said.
The commission’s report depicts a nation where liberals are seething with hatred for their own country, and whose divisions over its history and meaning recall those leading to the American Revolution and the Civil War.
It portrays an America whose institutions have been infiltrated by leftist radicals whose views echo those of recent totalitarian movements and argues that progressives have created, in the so-called administrative state, an unchecked “fourth branch” or “shadow government.”
And American universities, the report contends, “are often today hotbeds of anti-Americanism, libel, and censorship that combine to generate in students and in the broader culture at the very least disdain and at worst outright hatred for this country.”
The report likens the American progressive movement of the early 20th century to the fascism of leaders like Benito Mussolini, who it said “sought to centralize power under the management of so-called experts.”
“The biggest tell in the 1776 report is that it lists ‘Progressivism’ along with ‘Slavery’ and ‘Fascism’ in its list of ‘challenges to America’s principles,’” Thomas Sugrue, a historian at New York University, wrote on Twitter. “Time to rewrite my lectures to say that ending child labor and regulating meatpacking = Hitlerism.”
Released on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the report even takes aim at the legacy of the Civil Rights movement, saying that it “was almost immediately turned to programs that ran counter to the lofty ideals of the founders.”
Some of the strongest criticism was for the report’s treatment of slavery, which the report suggests was an unfortunate reality throughout the world that was swept away in America by the forces unleashed by the American Revolution, which is described as marking “a dramatic sea change in moral sensibilities.”
The report’s authors denounce the charge that the American founders were hypocrites who preached equality even as they codified it in the Constitution and held slaves themselves.
“This charge is untrue, and has done enormous damage, especially in recent years, with a devastating effect on our civic unity and social fabric,” they write. Men like George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, while they owned hundreds of enslaved people, abhorred slavery, the report contends.
“The White House 1776 Report seems to regard calling the Founders hypocritical about slavery as worse for the country than actual slavery,” Seth Masket, a professor of political science at the University of Denver, wrote on Twitter.
And in a line that drew particular fire from historians, the report calls John C. Calhoun “perhaps the leading forerunner” of identity politics.
“Like modern-day proponents of identity politics,” it claims, “Calhoun believed that achieving unity through rational deliberation and political compromise was impossible; majority groups would only use the political process to oppress minority groups.”
The commission is led by Larry Arnn, a Trump ally and the president of the conservative Hillsdale College. Its co-chairwoman is Carol Swain, a prominent Black conservative and former Vanderbilt University law professor. Other members include Phil Bryant, a former Republican governor of Mississippi; conservative activist Ned Ryan; Brooke Rollins, a former Trump domestic policy adviser; and Charles Kesler, the editor of the influential conservative publication The Claremont Review of Books.
The commission and its report are in part a rebuke to The New York Times Magazine’s 1619 Project, which reframes American history around the consequences of slavery and the contributions of Black Americans.
