So there's already noise about Collins and/or Murkowski possibly voting against a judge who would overturn RvW, and it seems like most expect McCain to abstain.

This seems to backed up by the fact that the WH is openly courting Red State Democrats, which it seems they wouldn't need to do if they had all the votes on their side.

Unfortunately, it's probably entirely likely a couple of those Red State Democrats - Heitkamp, Manchin, McCaskill, etc. - might just flip for fear of losing their elections this year. The pressure on these Red State Democrats is going to be immense from both sides.

It’s such a silly game when knowing a judge has x-view means that we know they can just overturn something. For better or for worse. It’s like the case is predetermined. Why would they even deliberate?

After the "election" in 2000 the Supreme Court was forever exposed as partisan hacks.

There are supposed to be above it all, instead they are just part of the circus.

Did anyone protest today?

I went to the Brooklyn part of NYC's protest. I should've made my own poster. But I am so glad that I took part and did something, after feeling so helpless for the last couple of weeks.

I was going to march downtown but it got moved to be a demonstration at a federal detention center. Super conevenient to where I live, but two hours before the official start time it was a crazy crowded mob scene, so I passed.

Wow. That's interesting indeed. And by interesting I mean disturbing.

To try and lighten the mood a little bit, I just saw Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Colbert's show earlier. She seems pretty cool, and actually gives me some hope going forward.
That this is a story when the president lies a dozen times per day is asinine... alas, that Ocasio-Cortez spent most of her childhood in an upper middle class suburb in Westchester and not in the Bronx like she claims might come back to bite her in the ass.

i know this isn't exactly "US politics" -- but it's important to watch Europe as well, as even socialist democratic supposed paradises like Denmark have issues.

COPENHAGEN — When Rokhaia Naassan gives birth in the coming days, she and her baby boy will enter a new category in the eyes of Danish law. Because she lives in a low-income immigrant neighborhood described by the government as a “ghetto,” Rokhaia will be what the Danish newspapers call a “ghetto parent” and he will be a “ghetto child.”

Starting at the age of 1, “ghetto children” must be separated from their families for at least 25 hours a week, not including nap time, for mandatory instruction in “Danish values,” including the traditions of Christmas and Easter, and Danish language. Noncompliance could result in a stoppage of welfare payments. Other Danish citizens are free to choose whether to enroll children in preschool up to the age of six.

Denmark’s government is introducing a new set of laws to regulate life in 25 low-income and heavily Muslim enclaves, saying that if families there do not willingly merge into the country’s mainstream, they should be compelled.

For decades, integrating immigrants has posed a thorny challenge to the Danish model, intended to serve a small, homogeneous population. Leaders are focusing their ire on urban neighborhoods where immigrants, some of them placed there by the government, live in dense concentrations with high rates of unemployment and gang violence.

Politicians’ description of the ghettos has become increasingly sinister. In his annual New Year’s speech, Prime Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen warned that ghettos could “reach out their tentacles onto the streets” by spreading violence, and that because of ghettos, “cracks have appeared on the map of Denmark.” Politicians who once used the word “integration” now call frankly for “assimilation.”

That tough approach is embodied in the “ghetto package.” Of 22 proposals presented by the government in early March, most have been agreed upon by a parliamentary majority, and more will be subject to a vote in the fall.

I think that article is a bit unfairly written to the practices that go on there.

And as a side note, are government assimilation programs really a bad thing? Sounds to me like it’s better than segregation of migrant communities.

Their attempted takedowns of her so far are that her family had a modest (some might say small) house in the suburbs and one coworker one time thought she didn't share enough of her tips. I suppose it does signal that they see her as a bit of a threat, though.

I hope she wins, and wins big.

You can see the difference between the parties with this candidate.

The GOP has a pedophile win the nomination and the entire party backs him.

A young female progressive beats the establishment candidate, and people are trying to find the faults which is doing the work for the GOP.

We are on the same freaking side. I don't want the Dems to blindly support just anyone, but this gal is not the enemy.

Hmmm, I'm kinda mixed about this. On one hand, it does allow the immigrants to get out of their enclave and take part more in Danish society. Isn't the isolation of Muslim immigrants in Europe is what leads to terrorism and joining such groups as ISIS?

However, I think this program goes too far. Taking them away for 25 hours a week seems like a lot. And teaching them about Easter and Christmas sounds like their trying to make these immigrants Christian rather than be free to practice their own religion. It sounds like Denmark is trying to make these immigrants give up their own culture and religion, out of fear that one day, Denmark would be mostly Muslim and its Danish culture a faded memory.

If that is case, why not make it easier for Danes to have more kids? From what I understand, the reason why Europe has zero population growth is because taxes make it hard for families to afford two or three kids. You see the wealthy and on-welfare Europeans having all the kids they want, but the average person there struggles to have a kid or two. If Europe really is anxious about losing their culture, history and way-of-life due to population issues, indoctrinating immigrants doesn't sound like the way at all. It would only cause resentment and would also only backfire on them.

The problem with Europe integrating their immigrants is that the various countries basically did nothing (aside from help ghettoize the visible minority immigrants) for decades, if not longer if you are talking about the ones that had overseas colonies. And now they're trying aggressive methods like the Danes. There hasn't been natural integration/assimilation the way you have in North America, not that we're perfect here.

Judging Paul, I entirely do not believe he is responsible for those posts and that content. He doesn’t even seem to use social media.

His ideology is just clouded heavily with racists, folks with prejudice, and the snarky I-know-better-than-you wannabe classical “liberals.”

re. Europe and immigration, well i'm not going to get into it here, but it's pretty pointless talking about "Europe" as a single entity in this respect as each country has its own approach to integration/assimilation, and can be vastly different (e.g. Hungary)

there are huge differences between France and Britain for instance (but i have gone on and on about that in another thread)

I think Eastern Europe can basically be excluded from this discussion as it wouldn't be particularly meaningful. There are issues there with minority groups (like Roma for example) but these countries (aside from Russia) do not have histories of colonization nor immigration. What is happening in Hungary is a travesty but they have never really had immigrants, much less visible minority immigrants from outside their culture. We can't compare at all what's happening there with the "ghettos" in Belgium, France, etc. And like you said even among the western European nations there is a significant difference to approaches.

This stupid fucking country believes that the far left, which advocates the resdistribution of wealth and demilitarization of the government so that all people can lead lives of dignity, is more dangerous than the far right, which calls for an ethno-state and a race war to eradicate all people of color from North America and Europe.

And articles these days aren't about presenting anything factual, it's only about sensational headlines so they get their "clicks".
