I'm suddenly thinking of a quote from "Frasier": "He says he wants you to apologize! He didn't steal...your shoes!"

we do that about as often as australians drink foster's and throw prawns on the barbie.

for real though when the exchange rate was good about 4 or 5 years ago i did the drive from halifax to boston or NY every few months to go clothes shopping. when the dollar was near par it was less expensive even including gas to do a shopping trip in boston because dollar for dollar nearly everything is cheaper down there than in canada, and the selection was usually much better too. as long as the total value of goods purchased were under $600 or something there weren't any duties to pay regardless. and i admit i may have pulled the tags off some new purchases and made them look like worn laundry once or twice to make sure i was under that limit

now that CAD is only something like $0.73USD it's not worth it (and i don't have a car anymore anyways).

That's exactly what some Canadians do. But it's a net benefit to the American economy and represents a loss for Canada.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I honestly don't know anybody who bothers "scuffing up" shoes. I've gone over when the dollar was at par, bought a new pair, tossed the ones I was wearing and that was it. Like seriously the customs guy who sees you through your rolled down window isn't checking soles on shoes.

And like you said, that's actually good for the US, that we're allegedly smuggling shoes over.

I don't think the scuffing of shoes is really the point. I've bought clothes in the U.S. and then wore them while crossing the border. I know lots of people who have done this to avoid paying duties to Canadian customs officials.

Could very well be, but they have been talking about leaving since atleast last year, maybe as someone mentioned, they had a hunch they would be thrown out and they quit before getting fired.

This isn't radical to say. The US is the most right wing developed nation. It's insane what we have convinced ourselves is normal.

over the last while i've really found myself agreeing with you more and more (sorry for being a dick sometimes in the past). i haven't seen any right-wing government creating anything positive anywhere recently, only destroying things. i'd love to be proven wrong if someone can show me a post-9/11 example of a conservative or right-wing government creating something genuinely beneficial for their people.

Especially now.

The Republicans have hitched their wagons to Trump, they're all in. You cannot negotiate with these people. They are God Emperor over country, full of hate and without any semblance of rationality or fact.

I've said it all along - much better to focus on the millions who don't typically vote and bring them into the fold than waste time on deplorables.

TOtally! Trump could impose something much like what happened in Argentina during the late 70’s and early 80’s and what happened in Chile with all the disappeared and it could be family members of trump supporters who disappear and still his base would find a way to say that he is doing the right thing! They are too far gone to waste any time on them. But trumps base is relatively small as compared to those who don’t agree with him. The problem is that it seems trumps base are the most motivated to go out and vote. People need to work on those who don’t agree with trump to go and vote. Perhaps in light of all that is happening, there will be a lot more motivation to vote in November. And I believe these people far outnumber the trump base. Work has to be done though to motivate them to vote.

I actually feel like we could see a good turnout this November in terms of voters. I think there's enough motivation out there and enough people fed up with Trump and the GOP's shit to try and make some change.

My big concern about November is whether or not outside forces will try and mess with the outcome again to favor Trump and the GOP. All the motivated Democrats, independents, and Republicans who are equally as horrified at what their party is doing as the rest of us are coming out to vote may not matter if somebody can just come along and screw with the results in the end anyway. We need to discuss that potential issue as part of our "get out and vote" strategy, too, and try and figure out ways for how to avoid or deal with it.

I've been thinking about the heat down there, too.

Is there anything we can do to try and help these people somehow? I just hate sitting here feeling so helpless beyond trying to demand politicians do something.

There's video going around Facebook of a FOX News clip where a panelist tells Corey Lewandowski about a 10 year old girl with Downs' Syndrome was taken from her mother.

Lewandowski replies by saying, "womp, womp".

I want to punch walls now.

Yep, just saw an article about that elsewhere.

And people wonder why Fox is the most mocked and derided of all the cable news networks. Fuck them.

If you want to protest, June 30th is the date nationwide. Let's hope it would be as big as the Women's March, if not bigger.

Awesome, thanks for the link. Checking out that website, it looks like the closest event of that sort for me at the moment is up in Minnesota, unfortunately. But I'll keep an eye out and see if there's anything closer, or if there's anything we can do to organize something right here in my town.

Extreme gerrymandering and voter purges come to mind also.
