sometimes, a photo can say so much more than words. herein lies the difference between marriage and civil unions:

why?

because some things are best left behind closed doors?

why push the boundaries? this show is doing well, we like these gays
why have them behave in a way that will make fans feel uncomfortable?

there seems to be more gay people around these days
but they really don't do pdas, how often to you see 2 men kiss in public, or even hold hands?

plus these characters seem like reasonable men, why would they want to do that stuff in front of their young nieces and nephews? it might confuse them

but Cam would.

What's your take on it, Irvine?

It doesn't bother me much that they haven't kissed, and I like that it's so not a big deal that they're gay, but as a straight female, I probably don't have the most interesting perspective on it. ;)

My "worry" (for lack of a better word) is that now when they DO finally kiss, it's not going to seem very organic, it'll seem like the writers covering their butts to stop the grumbling.

Yes, that's exactly what I think. Way to pick up on that.

I'm just addressing the controversy that's sprung up about if the show is considered so great and progressive, why have there not been muchas smooches.

Irvine can address this, if he wants to

but the gay couple on Desparate Housewives have not kissed either.

TV, especially prime time, gives us this 'sanitized' depiction of gay people as 'we' are comfortable receiving them.

The 'gays' better calm down with this.
They can easily be written out again.

To me, Cam and Mitchell seem to be written to be treated like it's no big deal that they're gay. They have an apparently great relationship, they adopted a baby, the family loves and accepts them - there have been plot lines that address their relationship, and Mitchell's relationship with his dad that touches on his being gay.

But of course, acknowlegement of their physical relationship is a big piece of the puzzle, too, if you want the whole picture of their life.

Anyway.

you see how this plays into one another?

though if you come to DC, i'll take you down 17th street on a saturday night so you can get some gay PDA if you wish.

You think two gay men don't kiss when they are in their home alone?

we draw the blinds, though, because we don't want God to see.

pretty much. if i have to put up with the (sometimes funny) baby-in-donna-summer-wigs gags, can't i get a blow job joke or two?

The actor who plays Cam was on Ellen today (it was on the TV in the gym). I was kind of hoping it would come up, so I could report on it here, but all they talked about were filming in Hawaii and how his dogs have driver's licenses or something.

Oh well.

I think this is one of those times I should've just zipped it - I could whine until I'm blue in the face about how I don't care if they kiss or not, and now it'll be all forced when it does happen, but it's important for others, so I should just take my straight privilege and shut up.

:)

it's less that they should kiss, and more that i wish they could without it being some sort of national issue.

like, you know, if, say, a potential SCOTUS nominee is a lesbian, how is that any more or less relevant than her being Jewish?

I'll totally love it if they get to kiss on this week's episode, as it was filmed eons ago, and everyone involved in the show will sit back, spread their hands and say "SEE?!?! Geez, you guys."

BLANTYRE, Malawi – A judge convicted a gay couple Tuesday of charges that could send them to jail for more than a decade following an engagement celebration, a ruling activists fear could send others into hiding and hamper the fight against AIDS.

Malawi's government has been defiant in the face of international criticism over the couple's prosecution since they were arrested in December.

Tiwonge Chimbalanga, a 20-year-old hotel janitor, and his unemployed partner Steven Monjeza, 26, were arrested the day after they celebrated their engagement with a party at the hotel where Chimbalanga worked — an apparent first in Malawi.

Undule Mwakasungula, a gay rights activist in Malawi, said the couple's decision to declare their relationship with an engagement ceremony appears to have been personal, not political. Others have been prosecuted under the law but this case was different because the two men were open about their homosexuality, Mwakasungula said.

The couple were convicted of unnatural acts and gross indecency under laws dating from the colonial era. Blantyre Chief Resident Magistrate Nyakwawa Usiwa said the sentencing will take place on Thursday and they could be imprisoned for up to 14 years.

The verdict is "extremely disturbing," said Michaela Clayton of the Namibia-based AIDS & Rights Alliance for Southern Africa, saying it could encourage anti-gay sentiment in the region as well as set back the fight against AIDS.

Gay people forced underground in Africa are unlikely to seek counseling and treatment for AIDS, activists say. In Malawi, nearly 1 million people — an estimated 12 percent of the population — are living with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.

Homosexuality is illegal in at least 37 countries in Africa including Malawi. In Uganda, lawmakers are considering a bill that could sentence homosexuals to life in prison and includes capital punishment for "repeat offenders." Even in South Africa, the only African country that recognizes gay rights, gangs have raped lesbians.

Mwakasungula said the two Malawian men were concerned that if they were released, they could be attacked by Malawians who have threatened them. But given the laws and the climate in Malawi, he said a guilty verdict had been expected.

The courtroom was packed Tuesday, and hundreds more people waited outside for a glimpse of the couple, who did not speak. Chimbalanga exchanged hi-five greetings with some in the crowd as he was escorted from the courthouse Tuesday. Monjeza, who has been tearful at previous hearings, was expressionless.

Priti Patel of the Southern African Litigation Centre, an independent rights group, said the couple could appeal on the grounds that the laws under which they were prosecuted violate the country's 1994 constitution. But an earlier attempt by their lawyer to have the case thrown out on those grounds was rejected.

The government, backed by Malawi church leaders, says it is clear the two men broke the law. Religious officials say homosexuality is "sinful" and the West should not be allowed to use its financial power to force Malawi to accept homosexuality. Malawi relies on donors for 40 percent of its development budget.

Edi Phiri, who fled Malawi for Britain five years ago after being beaten because he was gay, said he was shocked by Tuesday's verdict.

"It's very, very pathetic," he said. "I don't know how I can describe how disappointed I am."

i hope they lock this guy up for something ...

Before He Hired an Escort, Rekers Tried to Spank the Gay Away
By Penn Bullock and Brandon K. Thorp
Monday, May. 17 2010

What do you do with a little boy who likes cross-dressing and playing with dolls? If you're George Alan Rekers, you "extinguish" the boy's feminine behavior with a sometimes violent Pavlovian regimen while your scientific team observes through a one-way mirror.

That's what the Baptist minister -- who made international headlines when he was exposed by Miami New Times this month for hiring a gay escort -- did in the early 1970s at a clinic he opened at UCLA called the Feminine Boy Project.

In 1974, Rekers, a leading thinker in the so-called ex-gay movement, was presented with a 4-year-old "effeminate boy" named Kraig, whose parents had enrolled him in the program. Rekers put Kraig in a "play-observation room" with his mother, who was equipped with a listening device. When the boy played with girly toys, the doctors instructed her to avert her eyes from the child.

According to a 2001 account in Brain, Child Magazine, "On one such occasion, his distress was such that he began to scream, but his mother just looked away. His anxiety increased, and he did whatever he could to get her to respond to him... Kraig became so hysterical, and his mother so uncomfortable, that one of the clinicians had to enter and take Kraig, screaming, from the room."

Rekers's research team continued the experiment in the family's home. Kraig received red chips for feminine behavior and blue chips for masculine behavior. The blue chips could be cashed in for candy or television time. The red chips earned him a "swat" or spanking from his father. Researchers periodically entered the family's home to ensure proper implementation of the reward-punishment system.

After two years, the boy supposedly manned up. Over the decades, Rekers, who ran countless similar experiments, held Kraig up as "the poster boy for behavioral treatment of boyhood effeminacy."

At age 18, shamed by his childhood diagnosis and treatment, Rekers's poster boy attempted suicide, according to Gender Shock, a book by journalist Phyllis Burke. Rekers, whose early experiments were the first to ostensibly demonstrate a "gay cure," resigned from the National Association for Research & Therapy of Homosexuality (NARTH) last week, after it was revealed the gay escort had given him nude sexual massages. NARTH, however, stands by his science.

and this man was paid $60,000 by the STATE OF FLORIDA to testify against gay adoption in order to justify blatantly discriminatory policies. those who object to basic gay equality -- adoption, marriage rights, ENDA -- these are the people the dark forces you align yourself with have hired to fabricate "research" in order to justify and make acceptable your own prejudices.

i could fucking scream.

Primal Scream Therapy has pretty much been discredited as well.
:D

do those people have this done to them when they're 4, are tortured by their parents for the rest of their childhoods, and then try to commit suicide at 18?

sure hope not.

It's great that you have no clue that Primal Scream Therapy was claimed, around the same time I think (early 70's), to be a cure for homosexuality. Its inventor, Arthur Janov, defined homosexuality as a neurosis.

Your use of that cute little smilie said so much more than you can defend. Add that to your usual insanity where gay people are concerned, and your flippant attitude towards Irvine's genuine horror and dismay, and I'll stand by my original assessment.

You go ahead and be all smarter than me. I can handle it.

it's still used today. as well as anger bats and anger benches, too, so you can take out your rage at your weak, ineffectual dad who didn't teach you how to want to fuck women and your overdramatic, overbearing mother who was too excessively concerned with your physical safety to let you hunt, fish, play football, and fuck women.

it works really well.

That sounds about right. The younger the generation, the more likely they tend to be to embrace a lot more social changes. I don't know what exactly would still be taboo among us millenials now. I'm sure there's something.

It's kind of a nice surprise to see a downward trend in the pre-1928 crowd, even if it's not a very big one. But it's just pleasing to see the majority of those groups going in that direction :). We're getting there.

Having been taken in by the dark side of a religious idea of "psychology" I can at least laugh at this:

YouTube - Bruno Interviews Pastor Quinn, the 'Gay Converter' HQ

Of course it's not funny because the reality of these "courses" makes people who can't help what they feel also not reconcile with their religious beliefs so they are in a damned if they do, damned if they don't position eg. "Why did God make me this way?" Of course you could argue why did God allow a dualistic Satan etc.? Updating philosophy with real psychology is important.
