Should We Boycott Willie Nelson Now?

Country singer Willie Nelson, who preformed the song "Slow Dancing" with U2 on the "If God Will Send His Angels" CD single, has now recorded a song and video with country singer Toby Keith wherein they are some type of crime fighters. I'm sure as U2 fans we could find something "offensive" in the song or video, but that's another subject.

Toby Keith has been in a long running quarrel with Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks, whom we are all supposed to support because of her anti-George W. Bush statement made at a concert in Europe. It seems that when Toby Keith released his patriotic single "Courtesy fo the Red, White and Blue," Dixie Chick Natalie Maines commented to the L.A. TIMES that the song was ignorant and that people who listened to it are ignorant as well. When Toby Keith responded to that comment and her anti-Bush comments on his current tour, featuring the photoshop image of Maines and Saddam Hussein on the overhead jumbotron, Maines responded by wearing a t-shirt that said "F.U.T.K." during their satelite awards show feed which was broadcast on national television.

Now, we all know that Willie Nelson has done some great things with Farm Aid, he has made some cool, feel good statements in support of pot, and of course, given us a great vocal contribution to a soothing U2 song. But what do we do now that he has performed a song and video with a "bad guy"? Do we ban him? Boycott him? Demand that he explain his misdeed? Should we extend our boycott to U2 until they order all copies of the "If God Will Send His Angels" CD single destroyed? Likewise, should we organize a huge record-burning rally in which members of the web-based commmunity known as www.interference.com get together and destroy their copies of the single? Should we extend our boycott to Sting, who made a cameo appearnce in Toby Keith's cover of Sting's song, "Im So Happy (I Can't Stop Crying)"?

What should we do? Is everyone else seething mad about this?
How could U2 and Sting associate with such evil warmongers?

Natalie Maines and the Dixie Chicks are clearly witches, although I don't quite know for sure. However, the sure fire test is to drown them for about an hour and if they survive, we can burn them at the stake. Or the electric chair.

Willie Nelson? Well, I'm a bit suspicious of that hippie. He's probably trying to cover up the fact that he's a communist by hanging around the true Americans.

Toby Keith and Natalie Maines are both behaving stupidly, and have been for months.

If Keith's father is a veteran and he's so concerned about the troops, why doesn't he write a "patriotic" song about the coming cuts to benefits? Or does he care? I mean, because "patriotic" as his overwrought song proves him to be (I guess) he probably spends more per year on mullet-care products than most of the armed forces make per year.

Willie Nelson? He's past his prime musically, he's been strung out on god only knows what for years, and he's probably hurting financially now that he's paying his taxes. Can we hold this man responsible for such a vile act as collaborating with Toby Keith? Can we hold him responsible for anything he does at this point in time? Nope, so I guess I can't say I blame him. In fact, let's take up a collection for him so he can retire in style.

To be utterly serious for once, I have no problem with Willie Nelson collaborating with Toby Keith. He gained my respect over the years for the respect that he gave to farmers, when it was popular to treat them like shit.

As for Keith himself...well, it's country music, and it is a genre of music that tends to have a more conservative audience and such bombastic nationalism is acceptable. As for taking it seriously? I can't help but laugh.

As for the Dixie Chicks, I guess it is admirable that they made their stand and all, but, as for their fallout with the country music audiences, what do they expect? However, I think Keith's "jumbotron" of Maines and Saddam was highly immature and actions like these were somewhat why I never exactly could support this war.

However, in music, you've got to move on. Outside all the rhetoric, I doubt many liberals were listening to Toby Keith anyway and no matter what Keith would have done would have changed that. I'm sure that, if the Dixie Chicks can calm down a bit, they'll recover.
