I had an upsetting experience today and I'm afraid it's made me a bit paranoid and irrational about stuff. Some hacked an ice dance site and put all sorts of porno in there. I was pretty freaked when I saw the porn in there and the site has been taken down. It was horrible. OK, here's the fear. The site owner is from France and I'm afraid it's politically motivated. Of course the hacker is a psychopath and stuff, but there always seem to be more psychopaths, dunderheads and other assorted undesirables out there when there are alot of political tensions going on. The skaters are from Bulgaria, which is one of the strongest U.S. allies in the Iraq controversy. When we talk about skating we don't give a damn about politics. So it's disturbing to think that the hacking incident might be politics.
Sorry if this note is too off the wall. I'm freaked.

Wow, sorry you had to see that, I'm not suprised you were freaked out by it

Chances are it's just coincidental that the site owner is from France etc, and the real motivation for someone hacking that site is just that they're a sick and twisted . I completely understand why you're freaked out that it could be politically motivated though, it is horrible to think of how international political disagreements can start to affect things that seem completely unrelated.

I know. I just couldn't believe someone would do such a thing. These skaters just won a bronze medal for Bulgaria at some big competition and I went to the site expecting to see a podium shot. Imagine my shock when I saw something about a man's !!! I haven't talked to any of my Bulgarian friends about the incident. I think they're a bit freaked too.

That is my point Angela. It's only skating, the ice dance couple the site's about is from Bulgaria, and they won a bronze medal in an international competition yesterday. This is just a sport and has nothing to do with politics. The fact that the site owner is from France shouldn't be a big deal. I get on skating lists and talk about this stuff with people from France, Germany, Russia, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Israel, you name it, if it's a country they're on a skating list. Some nice Bulgarian student spent an hour translating an interview for me. These are very nice people and I hate it that this happened to them. Nobody has posted a note on the listserve to celebrate the bronze medal. I think they're too upset.

Unfortunately, this happens quite a lot in the internet. Security is difficult, considering even government computers are hacked into, let alone private web servers.
