Really great speech by the French Minister of Justice upon passage of the new law:

Quote:
Tonight, we would especially like to speak to the adolescents in our country – boys and girls – who have been hurt during this debate. We speak to those children who found themselves in the midst of deep and frightening chaos. They discovered a society where a wave of selfishness led many to loudly protest against the rights of others.

We simply want to tell these adolescents that they are at home in our society.

We recognize them in this society. We recognize their contradictions, talents, shortcomings, qualities and fragility. These are the things that make each and every one of us unique. Regardless of any sexual issues, each one of us is unique. That is the strength of our society. It is even the basis of our society. It is the basis of our relationship to society. So we tell these adolescents: if you find yourself losing hope, sweep all of those thoughts out of your minds. They are only words. One day they will float away. Stay with us and keep your heads high. You have nothing to be ashamed of. We say that loud and clear, with our all the strength in our voices. As Nietzsche said: Truth kills. And if you repress it, it will kill you.

Thank you all.

Amid Much Tumult, France Approves ‘Marriage for All’
Given the occasion let me suggest to the socialist French Minster of Justice a more apropos Nietzsche quote regarding "la vérité."

“Nothing is true, all is permitted”

I just don't get the obsession with stopping SSM. I really don't see what the big deal is.

Consider the effects France's decision will have on INDY's life, Irvine.

This is incredibly hard to watch, but worth it. I almost want to make a thread for it. Some of you may have seen it, it's been out for a while.

What if homosexuality was the norm? And heterophobia was real?

I'm pretty damn depressed after watching it. But I truly feel that we're turning a corner. Even the vast majority of people who are against same-sex marriage wouldn't be even the remotest bit as horrible as the bullies, parents and teachers in this video.

If its a non-event it's an event.

If its an event then it's an event.

i think you are right

A non-event is an anticipated or highly publicized event that either does not occur or turns out to be anticlimactic.

I thought the NHL was going to announce an openly gay athlete.

No matter, this is great. It shows a gay man doesn't have to be effeminate and can be as tough as the other guys are. Hence why the gay stereotypes are worthless.

I can not speak to anyone's motivations

but strategically, this seems to be advantageous for him.

it would be nice, if there is a bonus for being (openly) gay

I highly doubt that he did this in order to try to secure another NBA team. If you read the SI article he just seems literally exhausted from not being able to be fully himself publicly, and in the NBA. He also mentioned the marathon bombings, how they reminded him how life can end in an instant. So why not live truthfully.

He seems very intelligent and capable, if he doesn't get on another team he could easily do anything else in life. He's already played for 12 seasons. I think it's great for him, and it's about time that pro sports catch up.

He says

I realized I needed to go public when Joe Kennedy, my old roommate at Stanford and now a Massachusetts congressman, told me he had just marched in Boston's 2012 Gay Pride Parade. I'm seldom jealous of others, but hearing what Joe had done filled me with envy. I was proud of him for participating but angry that as a closeted gay man I couldn't even cheer my straight friend on as a spectator. If I'd been questioned, I would have concocted half truths. What a shame to have to lie at a celebration of pride. I want to do the right thing and not hide anymore. I want to march for tolerance, acceptance and understanding. I want to take a stand and say, "Me, too."
