herbert marcuse once said something to the effect of 'all societies require some degree of repression in order to function. capitalism, however, requires an excess.'

thoughts?

Wow! Thats a pretty neat quote there, Kobayashi.

I would have to agree. I mean just look at other economic and social systems in the world and the mode of their operation. They all begin with restriction as their foundation and then reluctantly loosen up from there on a case by case basis.

But our system starts at absolute freedom and then from there reluctantly restricts.

When you think about it, it makes alot of sense to do it our way. Creativity and innovation can flourish to the max in our system because no idea has to fight to get a chance to prove itself. Its the other way around. No idea in our system is put off limits until its proven that it was a bad idea.

So yeah, I think that successful capitalism does depend on excess. And I think its great as long as we also work hard to spread the excessive wealth that it creates around a bit more.
