Proof Americans/Westerners are not morally superior, as Bush and Blair imply. This short but good report by the excellent Matt Frei shows how anyone can do cruel things under the right conditions. I am angry over what happened at Abu Graib as I am by Al Qaeda-type group actions, but the solution is not to give massive amounts of power to those in "our group", but to understand we are all equally human. These men grieve with intense feelings of guilt and I feel badly for them, while the men who knew better in the Bush administration -- who are really to blame for allowing conditions where this kind of cruelty is possible, just as it happened in Vietnam and with all peoples in war -- will likely never know justice.

Anyone who buys the idea that "we" are morally superior is living in denial.
I'm embarrassed to admit, as an immigrant to the West, that I believed America was morally superior -- just as much of history through popular culture, celebrity historians, and CNN tell us. I only now know that's not true.
