I ran into the Red Crescent in Turkey. While getting on the tour bus one afternoon, I tripped and got a nasty cut on my leg. The bus driver put a bandage on my leg. He got out his bag and I noticed the large red crescent on the bag. A few days later someone else had the same sort of mishap and she got the Red Crescent treatment, too. As for big time disasters, it's being reported in the Turkish Daily News that the Turkish section of the Red Crescent is headed for Indonesia to help the earthquake victims. It's a great organization.
