President Obama, in my opinion, has not
been a very good leader.
I agree with you 100%, despite the poisonous atmosphere in Washington.

Only if by "handout" you mean letting people keep the money they've earned.

(and it's Reagan.)
A flat tax disproportionately affects the poor. If I make 500,000 $ a year after taxes, my household spending choices will never come down to meds for my uninsured children or a semi-decent dinner on the table 7 nights a week. Even if the government takes 75 % of my 500 K earnings, I have the basic necessities while many of my countrymen do not.

You see the situation as "letting [well off, in this context] people keep the money they've earned". I see it as the fact that we no longer live in the Gilded Age and should not have to rely on huge, sweeping acts of charity from the ultra-rich to help out the poor or infirm.

So, all the conservatives bitching about Obama's lack of leadership and his inabillity to get anything done he promised-first off, whoa, a president went back on some of their campaign ideas?!?! Call the presses, we've got a real breaking news story here!

Second, and more seriously...are any of those conservatives aware that they are part of the reason WHY Obama can't get shit done? The minute he supports an idea that a Republican originally supported (see Romneycare, which turned into Obamacare), the Republicans stopped supporting it. They fillibuster like crazy. They drum up insane scare tactics-death panels! Socialist/communist overthrow! No more guns!-that for some reason work on people in this country and make them turn against ideas that are quite good and that don't have squat to do with the horrorland the Republicans have come up with. They help many bills die before they even reach Obama's desk. And so on. Yes, Obama shoulders some of the blame. He needs to get tougher. He needs to find a better strategy to outline why his ideas will be good for us. He needs to rally the Democrats (and independents) to help gain support for his ideas.

But for the Republicans to sit there and complain about a situation they've had a big hand in creating within the last four years is hilarious.

Also, Mrs Garrison, excellent rant about Afghanistan, you get no argument from me on that one. Particularly the bit about spending so much money to make their country stronger and get those people better jobs and better living conditions and such when we can't even seem to do that here in our own country.

But I think Diemen raises a good point, too. The "you break it, you bought it" strategy makes sense-if we're willing to go into other countries, patronize their citizens, disregard any way of life they seem perfectly happy with to try and enforce ours onto them, and destroy their nation and kill their people in the process...yeah, we should probably find some way to clean up that massive mess.

The tip off should have been Barack Obama's "gaffe" (Michael Kinsley's definition of a gaffe made by a politician is when he tells us how he truly thinks by accident) back in 2008 when he derisively described people who live in small-towns as bitter people who "cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them."

...yeah, I've lived in those rural areas. I remember people making a big stinking outrage over that quote.

And then I remember many of those very same people turning around and proving that quote to be true. Look at how gun sales have risen since Obama became president, because of some bizarre fear that he'll take away the guns these people supposedly don't cling to. Look at how obsessive people about what religion Obama REALLY is.

There is some very strong truth to that quote. Believe me.

Let's protect women from the GOP

Yes, please, can we?

In summary, people should not expect anything from the government, nor from anyone, including family, parents, spouses or children. Independence is very valuable throughout life, which is a misconception that the majority of people have trouble accepting.

you're right.

build your own damn roads, schools, hospitals, fire departments, police departments, pay for your medicines at cost, pay the actual price of an MRI or colonoscopy.

if you can't afford it, fuck off. is that right?

Said during the primaries. Kind of theorizing why people might be voting for, say, Hillary instead of him if I recall correctly.

And if I recall correctly, a lot of those states that voted for Hillary in the primaries voted for Obama in the general.

Not that I am bitter. :)

Who's gonna hand you the cash to you as a freebie for any of those things?

The government?

Or yourself?

You're gonna buy a highway and a police department?
and how would it work? you build yourself a highway that only you can use. now what? i sure hope it's in a convenient spot for you, since it'd have to go in a place where there wasn't already an existing road another private citizen put their own highway on. let's say you luck out and it just so happens to get you to and from work. what about any other places you need to go? do you trade with other people? if i use your road, you can use mine? wait, that's starting to sound an awful lot like...the system we already have in place now.

if anyone out there wants to completely pay their own way for everything and not rely on a government for anything, fine. move to a private island and start your own country. but to expect everyone to go back to how things were back when this country was in its infancy just can't happen. it's impossible. and it's not that some people can do it and some can't, it's got to be all or nothing: you either have a welfare state and federal departments and budgets paying for things or you don't, and on the other hand you can't go off the grid with the handouts but say it's cool for others not to do the same.

I went to the 100th birthday game at Fenway Park yesterday. Obama recorded a video birthday message for the videoboard and was roundly, severely booed. Far worse than the usual standard booing of AFraud that took place. And Bill Buckner got a standing ovation. Obama didn't even give up five home runs like someone else did.

Very small sample size obviously, compared to the population of MA. But I was still surprised, and that might be a bad omen. He might really be in trouble. Don't think Romney could beat him in MA but you never know. Stranger things have happened. MA is also doing better economically than most of the country, and still such anti-Obama sentiment.

Here is the video, you can hear the BOOS along with someone saying "go back to Kenya...go eat a dog...LIAR!"

Obama Booed at Fenway Park - YouTube

Obviously rude and not my personaly style, but it does paint a possibly bleak picture for Mr. Obama's re-election.

It sounds like the guy who took the video probably said that. You can find people like that any day of the week at Fenway (drunk, stupid, rude, or any combo of those). But the overall general booing/negative reaction was pretty overwhelming.

Mitt "I'm against what I just said" Romney is the last man who should be making the case that Obama lies too much, but I'd love to see him try.

All Mitt Romney really needs to do is focus on the failed economic policies of President Obama, and if people are voting that way, he will be fine. Housing prices are at their lowest since 2002, gas prices have more than doubled since Mr. Obama took office...over $4 per gallon in several states in April (!), Unemployment numbers are astounding and have been since he took office, We have the $5 TRILLION deficit, our national credit rating was recently downgraded, and the health care mandate is considered "unconstitutional" by many.

If he goes on about Obama's failed leadership regarding the war on terror, well there's that too. Currently 2/3 of the infamous "axis of evil" are closer than ever to acquiring nuclear weapons, if they don't have them already. As commander in chief of the armed forces, he owns the successes (killing Bin Laden, ending the Iraq war) as well as the failures (troops urinating on dead Afghans, Major Hasan's killing spree at Ft Hood, SSG Bales killing spree in Afghanistan earlier this year, etc.).

In Mr. Obama's own words:

He's right - YouTube

I like President Obama on social issues, repealing DADT for instance, but this is a case for re-election not a popularity contest. Im sure he s good and decent man, and he's tried to work hard and get things done (well, when he's not golfing or vacationing in AF1). It is true that he came in at a bad time, but the truth is 3 years later he "owns" this economy and this war. If i could honestly say this country was better off today than it was 4 years ago then i might vote for him. If i thought we were possibly heading in the right direction...then yeah. But for now ill take him at his previous word, clearly its time to CHANGE course and HOPE the next administration has better luck at fixing this mess.

Honestly i dont like seeing anyone get Booed, from sports figures to performers to public figures, though im not exactly innocent if im at a game and our arch rival takes the field or something like that.

But do you know how much of this sounds like it's coming from someone who's never paid attention to a presidency before?

Do you remember what gas prices did under Bush? People have short memories.

What was unemployment when Obama took office, and what is it now? Now compare that to the last time the US has seen a recession like this... oh wait, we really haven't have we? Would McCain have been able to bring these numbers down quicker? How?

Do you remember reading the reasoning for our first credit rating drop? A lot of it had to do with the Republicans playing chicken.

And do you remember how many folks considered Bush's war "unconstitutional"?

I think the booing of any political figure is to be expected at any sports event and mostly indicative of a broad anti-political "they're all crooks" sentiment.

Romney winning MA in Nov

Dream On - Aerosmith - YouTube

You never know...Scott Brown. Things are getting very ugly here. Maybe Obama could really screw up and pick Bobby Valentine as his VP. They could get together and compare booings. I'm sure Bobby V is already looking for an out, and he can do anything anyway. Inventing wrap sandwiches, ballroom dancing, public safety commissioner. Obama should mock tip his cap too when he gets booed.

There is such knowledge of/experience with Romney that I'm sure it would be highly unlikely. I know how much of that type of booing takes place at sporting events, but I was still surprised. At least Caroline Kennedy didn't get booed.

thank you.

Since you quoted someone from my ignore list, i had the opportunity to see what i have been "missing"; Bush, Bush, McCain.

Let me just say this to you, since you seem to be in agreement, and since i do not respond to people i have put on the Ignore List. The current year is 2012 & not 2008. Bush is not the president, he is not running against this president, and neither is McCain. This is all about Mr. Obama, he is the one who has a record to run on, and he is the one who is trying to make the case for re-election. Mr. Obama owns this economy and he owns this war.

Iran says is building copy of captured US drone
By ALI AKBAR DAREINI | Associated Press – 5 hrs ago...

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran claimed Sunday that it had reverse-engineered an American spy drone captured by its armed forces last year and has begun building a copy.

Gen. Amir Ali Hajizadeh, chief of the aerospace division of the powerful Revolutionary Guards, related what he said were details of the aircraft's operational history to prove his claim that Tehran's military experts had extracted data from the U.S. RQ-170 Sentinel captured in December in eastern Iran, state television reported.

Among the drone's past missions, he said, was surveillance of the compound in northwest Pakistan in which Osama Bin Laden lived and was killed.

Tehran has flaunted the capture of the Sentinel, a top-secret surveillance drone with stealth technology, as a victory for Iran and a defeat for the United States in a complicated intelligence and technological battle.

U.S. officials have acknowledged losing the drone. They have said Iran will find it hard to exploit any data and technology aboard it because of measures taken to limit the intelligence value of drones operating over hostile territory.

Hajizadeh told state television that the captured surveillance drone is a "national asset" for Iran and that he could not reveal full technical details. But he did provide some samples of the data that he claimed Iranian experts had recovered.

"There is almost no part hidden to us in this aircraft. We recovered part of the data that had been erased. There were many codes and characters. But we deciphered them by the grace of God," Hajizadeh said.

He said all operations carried out by the drone had been recorded in the memory of the aircraft, including maintenance and testing.

Hajizadeh claimed that the drone flew over Osama Bin Laden's compound in Pakistan two weeks before the al-Qaida leader was killed there in May 2011 by U.S. Navy SEALs. He did not say how the Iranian experts knew this.

Before that, he said, "this drone was in California on Oct. 16, 2010, for some technical work and was taken to Kandahar in Afghanistan on Nov. 18, 2010. It conducted flights there but apparently faced problems and (U.S. experts) were unable to fix it," he said.

Hajizadeh said the drone was taken to Los Angeles in December 2010 where sensors of the aircraft underwent testing at an aerospace factory.

"If we had not achieved access to software and hardware of this aircraft, we would be unable to get these details. Our experts are fully dominant over sections and programs of this plane," he said. "It's not that we can bring down a drone but cannot recover the data."

There are concerns in the U.S. that Iran or other states may be able to reverse-engineer the chemical composition of the drone's radar-deflecting paint or the aircraft's sophisticated optics technology that allows operators to positively identify terror suspects from tens of thousands of feet in the air.

There are also worries that adversaries may be able to hack into the drone's database, as Iran claimed to have done. Some surveillance technologies allow video to stream through to operators on the ground but do not store much collected data. If they do, it is encrypted.

Media reports claimed this week that Russia and China have asked Tehran to provide them with information on the drone but Iran's Defense Ministry denied this.

no, but Mr. Obama has had to deal with 8 years of Mr. Bush's record. is it reasonable to assume that the country would be fully recovered from those unspeakably awful years?

yes, Mr. Obama has to stand by his record, but pretending that nothing existed before January 20, 2009 is kind of silly, no?

anyway, it was Mr. Obama who has removed troops from Iraq. and it was Mr. Obama who killed Osama Bin Laden. and it is Mr. Obama who wants to wind down in Afghanistan, as opposed to Mr. Romney and the rest of the GOP who believe that foreign policy should be dictated by generals.

as for the economy, this has long been far beyond the total control of most presidents, just like gas prices for example, but it's also inarguable that we've seen this:

Oh how passive agressive of you...

Of course it's Obama's record, but once again you missed the point.

I was pointing out context. This is something so many voters have grown to ignore. Context is key when making informed decisions. If we as a nation continue to ignore context we will continue in this cycle.

Hey look at the gas prices it must be Obama's(or Bush, Reagan insert whoever you want) fault, vote him out. But without really looking at cycles, and understanding what really drives gas prices then you're voting for the wrong reason, and those cycles will continue. And when it's Romney who is president and gas prices rocket up, I hope you make the same uninformed criticism.

Disabled America: 5.4 Million Join Social Security Disability Insurance Rolls Under Obama - Investors.com

A record 5.4 million workers and their dependents have signed up to collect federal disability checks since President Obama took office, according to the latest official government data, as discouraged workers increasingly give up looking for jobs and take advantage of the federal program.

This is straining already-stretched government finances while posing a long-term economic threat by creating an ever-growing pool of permanently dependent working-age Americans.

Since the recession ended in June 2009, the number of new enrollees to Social Security's disability insurance program is twice the job growth figure.
Let's repeat that.

Since the recession ended in June 2009

So we can't blame Bush anymore.

the number of new enrollees to Social Security's disability insurance program is twice the job growth figure.

Brag all you want about the 2.3 million jobs "created" by this recovery. At the same time 4.7 million new enrollees are now collecting disability checks from the government and have dropped out of the workforce completely.

congratulations for having him on your ignore list? i don't see how this contributes to the discussion at all. but you missed the point anyway and don't seem to even want to have a discussion and would rather just point the finger at obama. if you don't see how bush's actions affected obama's presidency and how clinton's actions affected bush's presidency, etc., then i don't know what to tell you. the problems that existed on 1/19/08 existed the next day and didn't crop up overnight. thus, they can't go away overnight either.

oh and i'm so sure none of those guys would've started collecting social security regardless. statistics like these are worthless. yes a percentage of them are only collecting the benefits because they can't find a job and their unemployment has run out. but not all. but 5.4 million is a nice big number that they can throw in a headline for shock value. all it means is 5.4 million people started collecting social security.

and it covers all new enrollees since he became president, yet the headline makes it sound like 5.4 million people showed up at ssi offices yesterday to enroll or something. let's not forget that the huge baby boomer population is now reaching retirement age and is starting to qualify for these benefits so we'd naturally see a rise in enrollees even during a surplus as compared to 10-15 years ago.

ch.gaschart

:| You have terrible heuristics. I assume starting a giant financial crisis was a great George W. Bush policy because it made gas prices crash? Maybe Obama should do it?

Also hope you don't complain about Mid East policy. Guess what motivates American bad ideas overseas? Keeping gas prices low...

Yes, recession only describes when an economy is shrinking. The economy stopped shrinking in 09 but the depth of the recession was such that it will take years to return to pre-recession employment levels, if ever.
