This is a letter he sent out on his listserv. I can't wait for "Stupid White Men" to come out!...

2/6/2002

Fahrenheit 911

Dear Friends,

I'd like to tell you a little tale, a personal story of what it is like
to fear losing your freedom of speech, how it feels to be drowned in a
wave of patriotism which threatens with all its might to suffocate your
ideas and stifle dissent.

For nearly four months, from September through December of last year, I
did not know whether the book I had just written for HarperCollins --
STUPID WHITE MEN -- was ever going to be read by the American public.
HarperCollins, one of the major publishing houses in the world, was
trying to decide whether the words I had written were now "too offensive"
to a nation which had suddenly fallen in love with George W. Bush.

By the morning of September 11, 2001, the HarperCollins printing presses,
located in Scranton, Pennsylvania, had already printed 50,000 copies of
an announced 100,000-copy first printing of my new book -- and then the
world, for all of us, came to a standstill.

The next day, I spoke to the people at HarperCollins, and I was told that
they were going to put most of their books on hold for the moment. I
thought that was a good idea. "We'll take this a day at time," my editor
told me, just as the siren in his building went off, the first of many
bomb scares that emptied the buildings of Manhattan that week.

I was in no mood to think about a "book" when all that was on my mind was
how my wife and I were going to get across this country and back home to
be with our daughter in New York. I had no desire to go on a book tour,
and the only tour that concerned me at the moment was the rapid one I was
on, in a rented minivan, for the 3,000-mile trek home.

Once back in New York City, the days turned into weeks, and I began to
make calls to the publisher to inquire when my book would be coming out.
The scheduled release date of October 2 had long since passed.

It was then that I was informed that there were "problems" with Stupid
White Men.

I was told that, unless I re-wrote large sections of my book (sections
mostly dealing with my harsh but funny criticisms of the W.), plus change
the title and the cover -- and then, after all that, reimburse the
publisher of up to $100,000 out of my pocket (!) so this new version
could be reprinted -- then the powers-that-be might actually destroy the
ENTIRE run of 50,000 copies that had already been printed! My book would
be sent to the shredder and "pulped." I would then have to wait for up to
a year before I could take it to another publisher. In other words, the
book would be toast.

I refused to rewrite a single word of my book. I was proud of everything
I had written. In my opinion, Stupid White Men seemed even more relevant
than before. Enron, Kenneth Lay, Arthur Andersen -- it's all there in my
book -- and I wrote those passages last spring! What if my book had been
released when it was supposed to, on October 2nd? The stuff I had dug up
on these guys -- I would have been talking about them all over the
airwaves long before they skipped outta Dodge with the cookie jar.

There's lots more in the book that I wanted out in the public arena
months ago: An open letter to Yassir Arafat on how to really win and stop
the bloodshed; a report on a chance run-in I had with Jeb Bush two weeks
before the 2000 election on a deserted street in Tallahassee; my
exploration of the three times (that I know of) that George W. Bush has
been arrested and charged with crimes by the police -- it's all there,
and I saw no need to change a single thing.

But I was told that "the political climate has changed in America" and
that my attacks on Bush and his cronies would not be met with open arms
by a Bush-adoring public.

I then had a number of meetings, on the phone and in person, with
executives, lawyers, and editors at the publishing house. They asked for
some sort of compromise, for me to at least "tone down" my dissent.
Again, I responded that would not be possible, and that I could not, in
good conscience, alter anything. I did this knowing full well it would
result in the death of my book.

Word began to leak out about Stupid White Men being "banned." Articles
appeared in Publishers Weekly and Salon.com. I was trying to remain quiet
about whole affair, but once a number of reporters found out (not from
me), and a group of librarians organized a letter-writing campaign,
HarperCollins, after weighing all their options (and the potential
reaction to those options), decided finally to release the book AS IS --
unchanged and uncensored, on Tuesday, February 19th.

They did the right thing, and I appreciated and admired their courage to
do so when I know this was not an easy decision for them to make,
considering the pressure they must have been under.

I have avoided writing this letter to all of you for weeks. In part, I
did not want to say or do anything that might jeopardize the good working
relationship I have now with the publisher. I have put nearly a year of
my life into this book, and the thought of it not being available because
of what you saw in this email just didn't seem worth it.

HarperCollins is doing their best to get the book out there -- but now,
even they have run into resistance, with some bookstores telling them
that they are not interested in having me come to their stores on the
book tour "due to the controversial nature of the book...and the change
in the country's political climate." Can somebody tell me why weather
patterns have suddenly become everyone's primal political fear?

Lately, I started getting a lot of mail from around the country (and the
world) as this story spread. People wanted to know the truth about what
had happened. Some had seen the issue of Entertainment Weekly a few weeks
ago which had named me their Winner of the Week for succeeding in getting
my book released. I decided it was best to let you know from me
personally what has transpired -- and that the outcome was a good one, a
rare victory these days for our side, and for the cause of free
expression.

For me, it really came down to the fact that, as an American living
during a time where our own government (and a mostly compliant press)
seeks to silence discussion and "manage" the truth, it was important to
tell you what I have seen, what I have been through, and to wonder what
would have happened if I had not been a writer who was known and had an
audience and an email list that on a good day reaches a few million
people. I don't like this feeling, and I would greatly appreciate it if
this country would come to its senses and start acting like America again
(or least our IDEA of America!).

My book comes out on February 19th. I'll be hitting a couple dozen cities
on the book tour, and I'll probably add a few more (if you'd like me to
come to your town, let me or HarperCollins know!). 100% of whatever
royalties I make on each book sold in every city on the tour will be
donated to a local social-change group.

Tour</A>

Also -- apologies in advance to you for having to look at my mug all over
the tube during the upcoming weeks (you'll be able to avoid me by
checking the press schedule on my website, beginning on the night of Feb.
19th with the much-anticipated mano y mano smackdown with Bill "Rile Me
Up!" O'Reilly on the Fox Nuisance Channel).

Over the next couple of weeks, I will be also adding new items to my site
(www.michaelmoore.com) such as "Vote for Your Favorite Stupid White Man!"
and "Take the Stupid White Man Quiz!" You'll also be able to read in the
coming weeks sample passages from the book, plus two new online chapters
I have written for it (post 9-11).

Oh, and if you want to get the book right now (it's full title is STUPID
WHITE MEN...And Other Sorry Excuses for the State of the Nation!) you can
order it from the website for independent bookstores, BookSense, or at
the sites with the deep discounts: Amazon.com or BarnesAndNoble.com. See
below for links. And, on the 19th of this month, it will be at your local
independent or chain bookseller, right next to the wrestlers' tomes and
Pat Buchanan's Book o' Laughs.

Needless to say, the publishing industry, much of which believes that now
is NOT the right time to be selling a book of political humor like this,
will be watching to see just how well people respond to an author who
thinks it's funny to suggest that falling off couches usually has
something to do with a beverage, and not a solid salted food product.

Yours,

Michael Moore

"An open letter to Yassir Arafat on how to really win and stop the bloodshed"???

My first question is, what would Arafat want to WIN if he's just wanting to achieve peace? (The answer, of course, is that he seeks the destruction of Israel, and I wonder if Moore is naive on that tiny little point.)

My second question is, why Arafat alone, and not Ariel Sharon? (That makes me suspect that Moore is actually actively siding against Israel, a loyal U.S. ally. Surprise, surprise.)

My third question is, how long can the letter possibly be? Considering Moore's ability to ramble incoherently, I'd guess 140 pages, but I know I could write a REALLY short letter on how to ask Arafat to "stop the bloodshed":

Dear Yassir,

Please stop sending your terrorists to kill Israeli civilians.

Thanks,
Bubba

My final question is, how can Moore continue to surprise me like this? Every time I think he's said the most moronic thing in the history of the English language, he tops it with something like this.

Oh, one more thing: Moore is an idiot (tsk, tsk, I said that 5-leter word again!) for fearing the loss of his "freedom of speech."

This was the case of a publisher considering not releasing his book - NOT a government trying to make it contraband. It happens, it's not a crime for it to happen, and he should simply get over it. By his logic, the First Amendment is being trampled on ALL the time, because most Americans are never even offered a book deal.

(I also think he knows he's being disingenuous. He used quote-marks around "banning", and I think he knows he's bullshitting his readers by suggesting it's a legitimate case of censorship, an actual instance of lost freedom of speech.)

And I can imagine he also believes that his freedom of speech is threatened if people choose not to buy the book, and booksellers simply send it back to make room for the next expose of the liberal media.

Beyond that, he has his silly little website and mailing list. Anything he wants to say, he can and does say. Even IF he's right that "our own government (and a mostly compliant press) seeks to silence discussion and 'manage' the truth" (and I don't think he is), he can still get his message out.

The only thing such a VRWC could do would be prevent him from making a tremendous sum of money through TV appearances and books sales through a major publisher.

But, surely, a good little progressive like Moore doesn't care about something so filthy and capitalistic as money, does he?

Does he?

My first question is, what would Arafat want to WIN if he's just wanting to achieve peace?

Yassir Arafat wants Israel to comply with the UN resolutions for them to withdraw from the land they illegally occupy in defiance of international law, to cease their ethnic cleansing and stop their settlement of said land.

Bingo. But that'll never happen. I can't see there ever being peace there. I think everyone could guess how it would play out...

And yet, Arafat rejected Barak's 2000 offer that did almost everything he wanted.

And I believe those who support Arafat ignore two REALLY important facts:

1) Israel seized the land in question in 1967 because of the threat of an impending attack.

2) We're not dealing with similar violence on both sides, and it's certainly not the case that Israel is the worse offender of the two. There's a huge difference between intentionally bombing civilians in a bat- mitzvah and accidentally killing civilians in an effort to kill the terrorists who plan such attacks.

Almost, but not enough for anyone in their right mind to accept.

1) Israel seized the land in question in 1967 because of the threat of an impending attack.

That doesn't change the fact their continued occupation is still illegal, and still in violation of countless U.N resolutions, and their settlements are war crimes.

2) We're not dealing with similar violence on both sides, and it's certainly not the case that Israel is the worse offender of the two.

Israel is the worse offender.

They have the power and the guns, they have the ability to effect change. But they are too caught up in their manifest destiny to bother.

They are the powerful nation that choses to use ethnic cleansing, blatantly racist laws and genocide to achieve its goals. The Palestineans are backed into a corner with nothing to lose.

There's a huge difference between intentionally bombing civilians in a bat- mitzvah and accidentally killing civilians in an effort to kill the terrorists who plan such attacks.

Israel has shown time and time again that it has a total disregard for the lives of those living in the occupied territories. Well, except for the illegal Jewish settlers.

Israel is the only country I know of where a man who beats a child to death only gets 6 months community service. While a mentally disabled child who injures someone else gets years behind bars because the child who was killed was what Israel refers to as "lice" and "cancer" and the person injured by the Arab was one of the "chosen people".

If Barak's offer wasn't enough for Arafat, it was far TOO MUCH for Israel's survival; it would have taken far too large a chunk of land out of Israel for it to be able to guarantee its own security.

Besides, if Arafat and his supporters want peace, they should consider negotiation, the practice of haggling instead demanding everything he wants.

To do otherwise is not a peace settlement for Israel; it's unconditional surrender.

As per the UN resolutions, if Israel believes it would offer itself as the price for giving up that land, perhaps it should hold onto it. (And your definition for "war crimes" is surprisingly loose.)

And here's a quick question, then: should we then do something about Iraq for ITS U.N. violations?

Israel is the worse offender.

They have the power and the guns, they have the ability to effect change. But they are too caught up in their manifest destiny to bother.

They are the powerful nation that choses to use ethnic cleansing, blatantly racist laws and genocide to achieve its goals. The Palestineans are backed into a corner with nothing to lose.

So is it also the poor Palestinians that are SURROUNDED by other countries that would like nothing better than to see it wiped off the face of the Earth?

Um, no.

That would be Israel. A country the size of New Jersey, surrounded by Arab nations that want to destroy it - and would if it weren't for U.S. support and the fact that Israel thankfully has nuclear weaponry.

It seems to me that quite a few people are taken in by pro-Palestinian propaganda that sets Palestine up as David to Israel's Goliath.

The analogy fails for two reasons:

First, David was a Jew fighting against a warrior from one of a dozen non-Jewish nations that tried to exterminate the Jews over the last few thousand years.

Second, Israel is SURROUNDED by Arab nations that want to exterminate this - and I don't see how this point can denied, ignored, or downplayed.

bubba what you just said changes nothing. it's far beyond israel vs palestine, it's about israel vs the world. what the jews did in palestine is exactly what the europeans did in america. and my guess is that they are looking for the same results by continuing ethnic cleansing and mass genocide.
eventually there won't be any more plaestinians to even put up a fight, just like the dying native american breed.

if i steal your car, and rennovate it, and kill you when you come to claim it back, does that make the car "mine" in the eyes of the law?

it's far beyond israel vs palestine, it's about israel vs the world.

I agree: it's Israel vs. the ARAB world, and if Israel does not defend itself, it will be wiped out.

The fact that this is a fight to the death kinda changes things for Israel, I think.

fact is israel is breaking international law. it doesn't get any simpler than this. it is israel vs THE WORLD. israel is a relatively new country, it wants to stretch out it's muscle after years of 'supposed' suffering, with the US as it's ally, it can and is doing just that.
on a deeper level, the Jews needs to stop punishing the arabs for what the Europeans have done to them, after all the single biggest tragic event in Jewish history did not happen anywhere near the middle east.why are they fighting to the death? why are they so paranoid? they have the greatest superpower by their side for pete's sake.

Moore's Book Publisher Delayed Release Date
Published Feb 8, 2002
NEW YORK -- Michael Moore's new book, ``Stupid White Men,'' months delayed and uncensored, will be published this month.

Defying recent opinion polls and the alleged concerns of Moore's publisher, ``Stupid White Men,'' has nasty things to say about President George W. Bush, whose approval rating has soared since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

``Stupid White Men'' was originally scheduled for the fall, but was pushed back because of the attacks. Moore, best known for the documentary ``Roger & Me,'' said HarperCollins wanted him to tone down his remarks and even threatened to cancel the book.

``I was told that 'the political climate has changed in America' and that my attacks on Bush and his cronies would not be met with open arms by a Bush-adoring public,'' Moore writes in a message posted this week on his Web site (http://www.michaelmoore.com).

``I refused to rewrite a single word of my book. I was proud of everything I had written. In my opinion, `Stupid White Men' seemed even more relevant than before. Enron, Kenneth Lay, Arthur Andersen - it's all there in my book - and I wrote those passages last spring!''

Lisa Hurling, a HarperCollins spokeswoman, said Thursday that the publisher would not respond to Moore's allegations.

Moore praises HarperCollins for releasing his book ``as is,'' but also says that some retailers don't want him making promotional appearances during a national tour that starts in New York Feb. 19, the day the book hits stores.

``HarperCollins is doing their best to get the book out there - but now, even they have run into resistance, with some bookstores telling them that they are not interested in having me come to their stores on the book tour ``due to the controversial nature of the book...and the change in the country's political climate,'' he writes.

Hurling said she was not aware of any stores declining to do events based on the book's contents. She said some readings will be scheduled at places other than bookstores because of the need for additional space.

At least some readers apparently sympathize with Moore. As of Thursday, his book was ranked No. 5 on Amazon.com's best seller list.
