I think many of us do disagree on the circumstances of this war, but I hope that all of us can agree that this is a very positive event. Let's just hope now that there isn't any severe retaliation from his supporters.

this is the moment we've all been waiting for... the iraqi people always had the fear that saddam would come back after we abandoned them in the first gulf war. now his face is all over arab television, getting checked my us army medics for head lice :hyper: :hyper: :hyper: there may be some retaliation at first, but i truely believe in the long run this news is going to demoralize his last remaining supporters, while at the same time helping those iraqis who still feared speaking out because of fear of his return finally taste that first drop of freedom.

Ahmed Chalabi and the INC were just on television saying that he would be tried in accordance with international standards on law and human rights. I was impressed by that. A smart, classy group of people.

Major props to the troops of the 4th Infantry Division. They should pass up the medals and promotions and all and just ask to be sent home for Christmas.

BTW, I merged the thread from regular FYM into this one...please use this thread ONLY for all commentary on Hussein's capture so as not to clutter the boards.

Thanks. :)

saddam: caught like a rat in the ground.:applaud:

bin-laden: you're next.:madspit:

This is a huge victory for the coalition, the Iraqi People and all those that support the formation of a democratic Iraq. Millions of Iraqi people can now breath a sigh of relief. Far more Iraqi's will be willing to help the coalition now that they know Saddam is NEVER coming back to rule Iraq and brutalize them. Hopefully many of his followers will throw the towel in now. They cannot win, and hopefully this will drive that point home.

Maybe this should be a new thread, but I'll post it here anyway.

What should be done with Saddam?
International court? Iraqi court?

Amnesty International said today that Saddam should be given POW status and allowed visits by the international Red Cross.

Hussein's capture is defintely a huge step forward for the Iraqi people, hopefully now they can live in peace, but I think that that would anger groups such as Al Qaeda. Wouldn't they want to get back at the US for capturing Saddam, whether or not he actually supported terrorism?

i think it might be the opposite, im afraid. i hope im wrong.

I'm also nervous about possible stepped up opposition. A big shot is obviously gone but the insurgents are out there. There are still idiots who think car bombings will get them virgins in paradise or some damn thing. There are reports that Al Qaeda is stepping up their activities in Iraq. Al Qaeda and Saddam were not allies. Al Qaeda doesn't give a damn that he's captured. They'll keep on trying to screw up the whole situation. I'd love to be wrong about this. I am very tired of killings and madness. I hope this madness can be stopped ASAP.

Unfortunately, I feel the same way. :|

I think the violence is going to increase in Iraq and I wouldn't be surprised if the US suffers another terrorist attack of some kind.

yes rats when cornered tend to become even more violent. Some Baathists have nothing to lose, for if they are caught will be in a world hurt equal to the pain they inflicted on Iraqi citizens.
Expect even a tighter, coordinated effort with terrorists ("insurgents" seems to kind to me) in Iraq. On the other hand, many will give up and go home demoralized.

I am curious to see how other "dominoes" might fall. Will intel gathering become easier, leading to a wealth of info? Will the UN return? Will other countries be inclined to offer more assistance? Will the Vietnam analogies end?

As for Al Qaeda and Saddam, don't know if they were allies, but more and more info seems to point that they were communicating, if not cooperating thru the 90's. I am surprised that nobody has posted the Telegraph (byline Coughlin) article from yesterday.

"We are uncovering evidence all the time of Saddam's involvement with al-Qaeda," said [Dr Ayad Allawi, a member of Iraq's ruling seven-man Presidential Committee]. "But this is the most compelling piece of evidence that we have found so far. It shows that not only did Saddam have contacts with al-Qaeda, he had contact with those responsible for the September 11 attacks."

I don't doubt that Saddam wanted to use Al-Qaeda for political purposes, but he and bin Laden were not particularly allies. By the same token both were anti-U.S. Not long before the war broke out bin Laden, in a tape, accused Saddam of being an "infidel" and a "socialist". Likewise Al-Qaeda used resentment, especially in the Sunni Triangle, against the U.S. for their own purposes and goals, a heavy duty Wahhabist-style jihad. I have to wonder what would happen if they could round up bin Laden. This could dry up some of the financing of these activities. No doubt Saddam was funding some of this. Bin Laden is funding some of this. Someone is pouring billions into the Al-Qaeda network. If we could stop the funding this would really be bad news for the terrorists, and great for everyone else.

I think it should be the Iraqi court since the crimes Saddam is being accused off are crimes against the people of Iraq, not crimes against other nations/the international community

+ I'm selfish enough to admit that - being dutch and all - I don't want Saddam in The Hague, because I don't think this will be the end of violence

I think Iran and Kuwait has some say in his fate. Maybe it should be a combo court.

Saddam's crimes have not just been against the Iraqi people. Look at what he did to Kuwait in 1990. Thousands of Kuwaiti's are still missing. Iran lost over 300,000 troops from a war that Saddam started. Saudi Arabians living in border towns near the Kuwait border suffered when Saddam sent Iraqi divisions into Arabia. Saddam launched multiple Scud Missiles against Saudi Arabia. He also flooded the Persian Gulf with Kuwaiti oil causing massive environmental damage as well as setting hundreds of oil wells on fire.

Lets not forget his launching of Scud Missiles against Israel and his support of terrorism against Israel.

Violation of 17 UN Security Council Resolutions passed under Chapter VII rules of the UN and the Ceacefire Agreement.

Taking hundreds of foreigners (called guests) hostage during the run up to the first Gulf War. The abuse of American POWs.

Saddam's violations and crimes go well beyond what he did to the people of Iraq.
