Although I don't wish to sound like I'm making light of this subject, from a Midwestern POV, a lot of us wonder why anyone would live in So. Cal. To us, it always sounds like you're constantly one earthquake, mudslide, and forest fire away from losing everything.

One dead. They say it was a broken powerline. Not better, but at least it wasn't again some arsonists if this info is right.

It's such a beautiful place, I could never deal with that fear. I hope the fires will end today.

The fires will most likely burn all week. These aren't structure fires, with a defined supply of fuel. The winds carry embers and can set new fires 1/2 mile away. Most of the fires aren't even partially contained yet, and that may take several days to a week. A few years ago, some fires burned for months. They were in remote areas, but even the huge Big Bear fires burned for at least a month. Once the wind dies down, which may not happen until Tuesday, the crews can get the fires contained.

This will go on for several days.

The San Diego fire looks like the worst one. They have had to evacuate an entire town (Ramona) and a hospital. As of now, 250,000 people are going to be displaced. There is soot on my car in the driveway, so I've got all the windows closed so I don't breathe the air. And I am 30 miles from the closest fire. Yikes.

i got sent home early from work,
it's getting pretty bad
both my boss and a coworker has to evacuate their homes, we could see the distant orange glow of the fires from the window at work.
it was pretty surreal, we had the am radio on,
there was a fire here 3 or 4 years back that caused us to miss school for one week.

wild animal park had a fire on one part of their lot earlier this morning,
i hope they managed to put it out
