Iraq stuff

Foreign Minister Abdullah Gül Friday said the government and military reached agreement on detailed plans for a cross-border offensive to crack down on the bases of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' party (PKK) in northern Iraq but avoided revealing them.

“We discussed plans in detail with the General Staff and decided how to act under what circumstances. Everything is clear from the worst-case scenarios to best-case scenarios,” Gül told the private NTV news channel.

However, he provided no details and said: “These are all secret. If we unveil them, this would mean we are acting irresponsibly as politicians who govern the country.”

Gül urged the United States and the Iraqi government to eradicate the PKK terrorists staging attacks against Turkey from their bases. “We wish Iraq will stop (PKK's) terrorist activities.” But he said Turkey was ready to stage an incursion if necessary.

Last week, Chief of General Staff Gen. Yaşar Büyükanıt asked the government once again to set political guidelines for an operation into northern Iraq. Asked whether the government will discuss a possible cross-border operation during a Cabinet meeting on Monday, Gül said, “Everything can happen in one day.”
