Spitzer Is Linked to Prostitution Ring

By DANNY HAKIM and WILLIAM K. RASHBAUM

ALBANY - Gov. Eliot Spitzer has informed his most senior administration officials that he had been involved in a prostitution ring, an administration official said this morning.

Mr. Spitzer, who was huddled with his top aides inside his Fifth Avenue apartment early this afternoon, had hours earlier abruptly canceled his scheduled public events for the day. He scheduled an announcement for 2:15 after inquiries from the Times.

Mr. Spitzer, a first term Democrat who pledged to bring ethics reform an end the often seamy ways of Albany, is married with three children.

Just last week, federal prosecutors arrested four people in connection with an expensive prostitution operation. Administration officials would not say that this was the ring with which the governor had become involved.

But a person with knowledge of the governor’s role said that the person believes the governor is one of the men identified as clients in court papers.

The governor’s travel records show that he was in Washington in mid-February. One of the clients described in court papers arranged to meet with a prostitute who was part of the ring, the Emperors Club VIP on the night of Feb. 13.

Mr. Spitzer appeared on a CNBC television show at 7 a.m. the next morning. Later in the morning, he testified before a Congressional committee.

An affidavit filed in federal court in Manhattan in connection with that case lists six conversations between the man, identified as Client 9, and a booking agent for the Emperors Club.

He had a difficult first year in office, rocked by a mix of scandal and legislative setbacks. In recent weeks, however, Mr. Spitzer seemed to have rebounded, with his Democratic party poised to perhaps gain control of the state Senate for the first time in four decades.

Mr. Spitzer gained national attention when he served as attorney general with his relentless pursuit of Wall Street wrongdoing. As attorney general, he also had prosecuted at least two prostitution rings as head of the state’s organized crime task force.

In one such case in 2004, Mr. Spitzer spoke with revulsion and anger after announcing the arrest of 16 people for operating a high-end prostitution ring out of Staten Island.

“”This was a sophisticated and lucrative operation with a multitiered management structure,” Mr. Spitzer said at the time. ”It was, however, nothing more than a prostitution ring.”

Albany for months been roiled by bitter fighting and accusations of dirty tricks. The Albany County district attorney is set to issue in the coming days the results of his investigation into Mr. Spitzer’s first scandal, his aides’ involvement in an effort to tarnish Majority Leader Joseph L. Bruno, the state’s top Republican.

i don't know

what happens after a resignation?

is there a vice mayor? (pun, blah, blah)

perhaps,

Rudy will throw his hat in the ring and stay in long enough to lose.

and btw,

this whole story gives me no pleasure, what so ever.

The feds got him.

We need to authorize the Administration to do all those non-FISA wire taps, now.

There must be other Democrat hanky-panky going on we can get out before the election.

2006, the GOP was the party of corruption.

There is time to bury, the Democrats
with that label, with a few more selected prosecutions of this type.

Assuming this is true I see it as a case of a holier-than-thou type hoist on his own petard.

He says he's disappointed with himself...I guess that's what they say to make themselves look good.

I have posted in here before

that the Obama

Osama error

is most likely a typo

I have now made my own case that belief.

What this does prove is that Obama is dominating the consciousness of many of us.

This should be good for him

and also probably is good for Osama, too.

I mean that we are so obsessed with the Democratic primaries and the whole 2008 election that no one is paying attention to getting Osama.

I feel the same about how the Iraq War diverted attention away from Osama.

I understand, Vitter should not have disappeared from the news that quick/got off easy, because unlike Spitzer whose focus was on public corruption, Vitter would always get off on gays and condoms and sex as signs of societal and moral decay, whatever that means. Vitter and Republicans are more hypocritical than Spitzer because they are the ones who insist on patrolling everyone else's marriages and choices of sex partners and contraceptive use. However, the way I understand it, this is not FISA or uncontrolled wiretaps, those were the ones being conducted without warrants and they only apply to US persons calling overseas. This is a domestic Article III of Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968 wiretap and as such, was obtained via a search warrant. The Bush administration has claimed no authority to use warrantless domestic wiretaps as of yet.

Sources: Spitzer Could Resign Tonight
Lt. Gov. David Paterson Could Be Sworn In By 7 P.M.
AP: Spitzer Caught On Federal Wiretap, Identified As 'Client 9'

NEW YORK (CBS) ― Gov. Eliot Spitzer was not expected to continue as governor and may resign by Monday evening, sources told CBS 2, after it was reported that he was linked to a prostitution ring.

Reliable sources told CBS 2 Political Reporter Marcia Kramer that Lt. Gov. David Paterson could be sworn in as governor as early as 7 p.m. Monday.

The news sets off one of the largest scandals in modern New York state political history.

During a news conference Monday afternoon, Spitzer, 48, apologized to his family and the public, but did not go as far as to explain why. "I have acted in a way that violates my obligations to my family and violates my sense of right and wrong," he said in a brief statement. "I have disappointed and failed to live up to the standard I expected of myself.

"I must now dedicate some time to regain the trust of my family," he said alongside his wife, Silda Wall Spitzer, who was visibly upset as he spoke.

The couple has three daughters together.

A law enforcement official told The Associated Press that Spitzer's involvement in the prostitution ring was caught on a federal wiretap.

The official says Spitzer is identified in court papers as "Client 9," and the wiretap was part of an investigation that opened in the last few months.

The official says the New York governor met last month with at least one woman in a Washington hotel. The law enforcement official spoke on condition of anonymity because of the ongoing investigation.

Sources told CBS 2 that the ring Spitzer was involved in was the high-profile "Emporers Club VIP," which was accused last week of offering prostitutes to wealthy clients, topping out at $5,500 an hour. Four people were arrested in the ring that was linked to cities in the U.S. as well as in Europe.

The Web site of the Emperors Club VIP displays photographs of the prostitutes' bodies, with their faces hidden, along with hourly rates depending on whether the prostitutes were rated with various numbers of diamonds, with seven diamonds being the highest. The highest-ranked prostitutes cost $5,500 an hour, prosecutors said.

The case is being handled by prosecutors in the Public Corruption unit of U.S. Attorney Michael Garcia's office. Garcia spokeswoman Yusill Scribner said the office had no comment.

Spitzer has built his political legacy on stamping out corruption, including several headline-making battles with Wall Street while serving as attorney general. He stormed into the governor's office in 2006 with a historic share of the vote, vowing to continue his no-nonsense approach to fixing one of the nation's worst governments.

Time magazine had named him "Crusader of the Year" when he was attorney general and the tabloids proclaimed him "Eliot Ness."

But his stint as governor has been marred by several problems, including an unpopular plan to grant driver's licenses to illegal immigrants and a plot by his aides to smear Spitzer's main Republican nemesis.

Spitzer had been expected to testify to the state Public Integrity Commission he had created to answer for his role in the scandal, in which his aides are accused of misusing state police to compile travel records to embarrass Senate Republican leader Joseph Bruno.

Spitzer had served two terms as attorney general where he pursued criminal and civil cases and cracked down on misconduct and conflicts of interests on Wall Street and in corporate America. He had previously been a prosecutor in the Manhattan District Attorney's Office, handling organized crime and white-collar crime cases.

His cases as state attorney general included a few criminal prosecutions of prostitution rings and into tourism involving prostitutes.

In 2004, he was part of an investigation of an escort service in New York City that resulted in the arrest of 18 people on charges of promoting prostitution and related charges.

Stay with WCBSTV.com and CBS 2 for more on this developing story.

It's interesting that he became what he prosecuted.

If it's true that one cannot embrace a flame without getting burned, is there a way for greater accountability among those who prosecute lawbreakers, so that this sort of thing doesn't happen?

Of course,
I am sure that is how the paper trail reads.

But, I am also confident that this Administration is abusing their ability to take free looks and listens where ever they want.

When they find something they want to exploit after sneaking in the back door.

All they do is get the right paper work and proper channels and go back in the front door.

Unbelievable, that a man who has become governor of NY would throw it all away for sex. The arrogance, the stupidity. Not to mention his wife and three daughters and how it affects them. Looks like he should have been investigating himself.

this really is terrible, on so many levels.

he was a rising star, now it's all over.

He was a sanctimonious hypocrite with a overly aggressive, overly pedantic way of prosecuting the law and frankly, an anti-free enterprise bent, as far as I can determine.

Oh but it's probably all his wife's fault, she wasn't satisfying him properly

actually he's wife is much too attractive for him.

most women have an idea if their husband is being faithful or not; i suspect she cut him off a long time ago.

some men derive power by how much sex they have; sadly this is wrong thinking.

i'm sure he felt he was entitled to sex from his gorgeous wife, wife said no-and he got stupid.

he should of tried to fix things w his sweetheart-she looks like jennifer aniston kind of.

he can always start trolling match.com as soon as they're legally seperated i suppose.

i know these things having studied female behavior over the years-becoming somewhat of an expert.:hmm:
