The GOP race is funnier than "Whitney".

Newt, glad the race continues and the GOP establishment must resharpen their knives.

Mitt had a wonderful line near the end of his speech tonight. "If you believe the disappointments of the past 3 years are a detour--not our destiny... then I ask for your vote."

Great line.

agreed. we need to get back on the Bush/Cheney path of endless war, endless deficits, and lower taxes for the wealthiest among us.

maybe Mitt will help us bomb Iran!

This is all very 2004 all over again. The sitting president is ripe for the picking and the opposing party can't find an electable candidate to run against him.

At least the Newt/Obama debates would be entertaining.

Great stuff. Hopefully he's suddenly raking in gazillions so he can properly fight Romney in Florida? Gingrich stealing it would be a dream. Hilarious.

Congratulations, you're becoming as skilled as our president in erecting the false construct that only two choices are before the American people this fall; the president's vision and "the failed policies that got us into this mess."

this is too easy:
Quote:
Let me just say that I believe the debate we're going to have with President Obama over the next eight or nine months, the outlining of the two Americas. The America of the Declaration of Independence, the America of Saul Alinsky. The America of paychecks. The America of food stamps. The America of independence. The America of dependence. The America of strength in foreign policy, the America of weakness in foreign policy. Those two choices, I believe will give the American people a chance to decide permanently whether we want to remain the historic America that has provided opportunity for more people of more backgrounds than any country in history, or whether in fact, we prefer to become a brand new secular, European-style bureaucratic socialist system.~ Newt Gingrich, 1/21/12

i though our choices were between freedom and socialism?

I guess there is a sort of high speed car crash option? I'm not really sure who best represents that though.

The whole thing is hilarious and yet makes me want to weep all at the same time.

Yeah, now if only I could believe he'd actually deliver on that line.

Win the whole thing? Really?

I actually think that campaign could be the kind of showdown you probably need. No doubt (obviously, and especially in the south) he's currently campaigning far further to the right than he would be in a general election, but it would still be, I think, a 'good thing' if he won the nomination and stood ground on a lot of the shit he's been saying into the presidential campaign, and you had a very clear choice between the two very clearly, very different visions of what your country was/is/could be/will be. And that's with Obama sitting where you would expect - where he always has been, bang in the middle. And if Obama doesn't sit perfectly in the middle, but thinks "Fuck it guys, lets lob some stuff from the left" it gets perhaps even better in terms of a showdown, but obviously more risky for him (e.g. think about Obama making pro-same sex marriage, something he'll likely 'come around to' in a second term anyway, a campaign issue this year in the face of how Gingrich would handle the anti - in my view, couldn't ask for a better opportunity).

If the good people of the United States are given that choice, and the majority go with Gingrich, then I'm sorry, but I seem to have completely misjudged you. I would expect it would be an absolute bloodbath to Obama. And as some sort of ultimate referendum, it could be great. Nominate Romney, and especially if he then goes on to lose - then the right wing will just keep on keeping on, no doubt far, far worse too. They got shafted with Romney, then shafted with a second Obama term. They'll be ten times as livid and irrational as they are now. Give them the kind of nominee they want, spouting all the shit they want to hear, and then have him comprehensively - fairly, undeniably - renounced and destroyed... pretty good, no?

Plus, hugely entertaining for the non-American viewer. Obama v Romney risks being a hugely boring steady chess game about taxes and jobs (good luck to you and your economy, but... snoooze...). Obama v Gingrich would be fucking mad.

if Gingrich is the nominee Obama will win much bigger than in 2008, and the Dems will likely keep the Senate and possibly win back the house. Gingrich is toxic outside the heart of the GOP base, and the man most responsible for transforming the GOP into the party of racism resentment and revenge grievance.

all that said, if there were another economic collapse, another terrorist attack, or some other mass calamity that could be pinned on the president, then we would find ourselves in a much different world.

There are a couple of new polls now showing Newt up by 8-9 points. This is really too fantastic for words. Debate tonight will be high comedy.

i'm not saying i'd vote for him, and i'd be frightened for all of us if we had a president newt...

newt just dominated in a highly evangelical state the day after it came out that he wanted an open marriage with his second wife so that he could keep fucking his mistress.

he crushed the competition, and the moderators, in that debate. if he's able to do the same thing to obama, he could get a lot of the middle ground.

no, not the independents... the baby boomers sitting at home who are seeing their retirement funds shriveled away, aren't very political except always vote for the president... not stupid but don't follow this shit like it's their jobs like many of us do...

combine that with a very large "anyone but obama" vote from the republican base, and a lethargic turn out from those that put obama over the top 4 years ago, especially the young vote?

yea... i don't think it will happen, but i can see how it could. stranger things have happened.

the man's a cockroach. just when you think the fucker's dead and gone, he's sitting at 1600, and the rest of us are all scratching our heads wondering how the fuck it happened.

I was thinking this as well. I would think a Newt nomination would be a Democrat's best friend.

one interesting fact:

South Carolina is almost 30% African-American.

99% of their primary voters were white.
