Pence's former lead coronavirus task force aide slams Trump and endorses Biden in new video

By Jake Tapper and Jeremy Herb, CNN
Updated 10:04 PM EDT, Thu September 17, 2020

Washington(CNN)A former top aide to Vice President Mike Pence assailed President Donald Trump's response to the pandemic in a new video Thursday, adding to the growing list of former Trump administration officials who have criticized the President and, in several cases, endorsed his Democratic opponent Joe Biden.

Olivia Troye, who was a homeland security adviser to Pence and his lead staffer on the White House's coronavirus task force, charged in the two-minute video that Trump failed to protect the American public because he only cared about himself and getting reelected. Troye's criticism is particularly striking because of her role working on the coronavirus task force, which Pence leads.

"Towards the middle of February, we knew it wasn't a matter of if Covid would become a big pandemic here, it was a matter of when," said Troye, who left the White House in late July. "But the President didn't want to hear that, because his biggest concern was that we were in an election year, and how was this going to affect what he considered to be his record of success?"

At one coronavirus task force meeting, Troye claimed that Trump suggested "maybe this Covid thing is a good thing."

"I don't like shaking hands with people. I don't have to shake hands with these disgusting people," Troye claimed Trump said at the meeting.

The White House responded swiftly to Troye's allegations by accusing her of being a disgruntled employee who didn't raise objections while on staff.

Trump told reporters on Thursday evening that he did not know Troye, but claimed she had been goaded into making her statement.

"(T)he people get a hold of her and say, 'Let's say some bad things about Donald Trump,' " Trump said.

He added, "Every time somebody leaves government -- 99% of the time I'm not going to know these people. And they leave on a basis of almost like it's a personal thing with me."

Pence also slammed his former aide.

"I haven't read her comments in any detail, but it reads to me like one more disgruntled employee who's left the White House and now has decided to play politics during an election year," Pence said of Troye, in response to a question from a reporter. "I think my staff has indicated that she made no comments like that when she was serving on our team here at the White House coronavirus task force."

Pence added he "couldn't be more proud of the work we've done all along the way and the leadership that President Trump has provided."

White House deputy press secretary Judd Deere said, "Outside of generally watching the White House Coronavirus Taskforce from the overflow staff room, this disgruntled former detailee was never in private meetings with the President and her assertions have no basis in reality and are flat out inaccurate."

And Lt. Gen. Keith Kellogg, Pence's national security adviser, said in a statement Troye was "disgruntled that her detail was cut short."

"Ms. Troye directly reported to me, and never once during her detail did she every express any concern regarding the Administration's response to the Coronavirus to anyone in her chain of command," Kellogg said.

Probably Melania, Tiffany (definitely Tiff), Eric, Barron, Kush, Pence, Barr.

Basically everyone but Ivanka, Kim Jong Un, Putin and possibly Don Jr.

We're a week into the school year and the case load is starting to go off the rails in Ontario.

They've limited indoor gatherings to 10 now but my guess is the restaurants/bars and maybe gyms will be closed down next. We've had a couple of outbreaks at strip clubs in Toronto - so our government is unable to get an organized and safe return to school but strip clubs are open? They should be like the very last thing that needs to be operational right now.

Winter is coming and it's going to be a long and lonely one.

Please... he hates Don Jr.

The disgusting people are, of course, his base.

They had the most similar non-response to the US. And super bad death rates.

But sure. It’s looking bad in lots of places.

The numbers are on the rise everywhere. Considerably on the rise in Canada, I think 40/50 US states are showing a rise over the last week and Europe is in various states of bad to worse. Everyone has gotten more comfortable with not social distancing, going on summer holidays and so on and this is the result. Now imagine adding schools to that + fall and winter indoors in much of the northern hemisphere + some major holidays coming up which are magnets for large, indoor gatherings.

The death and hospitalization rates are still low, however. This is largely because most of the new infections are younger people (18-35 or 40 age group), we have gotten better at treating patients who are hospitalized and because we know that these numbers lag by several weeks so we have to wait and see where they are in October.

I don't think any government is prepared to do a full lock down again, I don't think the economy or businesses can withstand it so we will see a LOT of targeted closures - bars, indoor dining, gyms, theatres, casinos, etc.

Yeah people in Chicago are basically pretending that Covid is over. It doesn't help that the rules are so lax that restaurants are thinking one window open qualifies as an outdoor dining space.

No way do we go through another lockdown. The feds funneled all the $ to their rich friends and it fucked the rest of us over.

I have friends who own restaurants downtown that can’t provide outdoor dining. We are on the verge of going back into the top restricted tier again because of college towns. If we fall into this tier, it’s 3 week min closure for indoor activities

These owners can’t survive one or two more closures like this.

I also know a few yogis who just expanded their business and they’re basically saying FU to the protocols. 10% is the number that can be indoors, but they’re pushing it to 50-75%. And no masks when practicing, which in a hot sweaty intense class the mask won’t serve its purpose. I was asked to teach for this studio but i declined because i don’t feel comfortable indoors, and i don’t agree with their thumbing nose at the health of everyone. I was told capacity doesn’t matter as long as everyone is at least 6’ away. Yet you’re in a studio with no windows and recirculated air....ooook

There’s a big push from the county to get the State to exclude the college infections, cause they’re isolating in dorms.

A second push is for local businesses to manage their own openings and closures since they know the area and community better.

I absolutely feel horrible for these people trying to survive, but i can’t get on board with discounting numbers and letting local authorities manage the pandemic

We are in for a long, long winter. Even if everyone followed protocols to a T, a pandemic winter isn’t going to be easy

My favorite bar was recently sold and will not be reopening because of the pandemic. It had been an SF Valley fixture since at least the '80s, was used as a location for films and served as a meeting place for the locals here. I used to go there once a week with my friends and even the ones who didn't care for the bar scene in LA thought it was a great place to chat and sing some karaoke.

If established businesses with regular clientele aren't surviving the lockdown, what chance does a smaller, up and coming business have? I can't imagine what a second full lockdown would do to this area, but I think we're about to find out.

Here in Australia, it looks promising that Victoria’s level 4 lockdown will be eased this weekend after 8 weeks. From one day peaks of low 700s in early August, they’ve brought the rolling 14 day average down to 33. New South Wales is consistently in the single digits, it’s lingering and refusing to go away completely. New Zealand has also been in single digits since September 2nd, the recent outbreak never broke 20 cases in a day.

Frankly, NSW has been lucky. Very few people are wearing masks or observing social distancing, although all places of business are protecting their staff as much as they can and there are far fewer seating areas in cafes, pubs, etc. The government is keen to get us all back into the office but it’s all down to employers. Anecdotally, most office workers I talk to say their businesses are moving to at least 50% occupancy moving forward with first choice offered to employees.

Most of the world had a surge in cases during the summer and I am worried that it could happen here too, spring has only just started and we’re already hitting 30c some days. Official policy for the beach is to stay one towel length apart, we’ll see if this is enough and if we’re all willing to partially give up our summer should cases begin to rise again.

One thing we have going for is closed international borders and certain states also closing theirs. So the merry holiday makers of the UK and Europe spreading the disease shouldn’t be a factor here.

Right? I haven't played basketball since March, which is the longest I've gone without playing since 6th grade.
