Global Pandemic Part II: Sequel Escalation

He is the whiniest bitch on TV. Good lord.

He just did a racism there at the end, too.

I love that female Asian reporter who just stood up to him, and asked him why it is a competition with other countries for him in the midst of all the deaths here. Sorry I don't know her name.

Then he completely disrespected Kaitlan Collins. Always does this to female reporters.

Yes he did, and she called him out on it. Good for her, how dare he say that to her. Disgusting

I knew he would wig out somehow, but ask China to an Asian reporter...wasn't expecting that. Even though at this point I should. He makes me sick.

Man what a TV show.
The writers of today's episode should get an Emmy.

The most satisfying part of the whole thing is that he was actually having a really good press conference. Stayed under control for the most part. Even the whole "Obamagate" flub was just like whatever, and then out came the racism and the reporter doing a tremendous job making him look like a complete ass, and then he caps it off by running off scared.

He is the biggest snowflake.

Which makes sense because his entire life is about projection his failures onto other people.

they know he's going to lose. bigly.

Quote:
That means, perhaps above all, resuming the deficit fear-mongering that was such an effective tool to hamstring Barack Obama’s presidency. It also means adjusting their policy and spending agenda to the defensive. They aren’t bothering to talk much about new tax cuts or anything else they’d like to pass. Instead, the focus is shifting to cutbacks and constraints. “Automatic spending cuts as the economy improves” is something a Republican would want only if there’s a Democrat in the White House. It shows that that’s precisely what at least some of them are anticipating.

Meanwhile, Republicans are encouraging and amplifying the still-small movement to defy stay-at-home orders, with all the same deranged rhetoric about “tyranny” that we heard in 2009 when conservatives rose up in rage at Obama. Any work they do now will make it easier to ramp up the new version of the tea party if Joe Biden wins.

The Opinions section is looking for stories of how the coronavirus has affected people of all walks of life. Write to us.

And as for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, he’s nothing if not practical. If you think Trump’s chances of reelection are dwindling, why would you try to save the economy now? Imagine if you passed measures that made the recovery easier but Trump lost anyway. Then Biden wouldn’t have such a hard time, and Republicans getting a huge backlash win in 2022 would be less likely. Better to keep everyone miserable for a couple more years. McConnell can just confirm as many hard-right judges as possible between now and January, and consider his work done.

It’s not that there’s no sincere sentiment underneath the Republican reticence to do too much to save the economy. Republicans are genuinely fearful that people will be too thankful if government helps them too much and that the crisis will make the passage of stronger safety-net programs more likely in the future.

But if you thought Trump could still win, your best move would be to give the economy the biggest short-term boost possible with massive government spending, then worry about cutting it back later. Doing nothing now, even if you’re planning to promote cuts in a year or two, suggests only that you think the Trump presidency is all but a lost cause.

The economy ship has sailed for him as a re-election strategy IMO. Even the largest stimulus package imaginable won't do much of anything to curb unemployment. I think I read somewhere that in Georgia a large number of businesses still won't reopen even with the lifted restrictions.

The only thing that they aren't addressing - and it's the big white elephant in the room - is the reality of 2020 census redistricting.

Every year that passes diminishes the # of GOP voters.

But redistricting could accelerate that exponentially.

There's kind of another angle here that's pretty morbid to mention but also kinda true...

We can’t be handing out handouts to those people once the D’s are back in power, they’ll say.

Deficits matter, they’ll say.

From that quoted bit Irvine shared...

Right? Imagine, just imagine, if this administration had found some way to better handle this crisis from the get-go, or at least, improved upon any of their initial struggles and failures. They could've done things that even Trump's most vehement detractors would have to agree were beneficial, his approval rating may have risen to, and stayed at, a respectable degree, and they could've written their ticket to a second term and sat comfortably the rest of the year.

But no. Instead, they choose to do...this. Instead ,they choose to go on TV and openly say that yeah, it's okay to sacrifice the elderly to get the economy going again. No, we don't have to wear masks, we're too special for that, despite the fact that we're going to areas where others are wearing and making them, and despite the fact that the White House has a few positive cases of the virus already. Yeah, we'll happily encourage psychos who are walking around armed to the teeth and storming state government buildings to intimidate lawmakers that aren't doing our bidding. Yeah, we'll let Trump put his dumbass son-in-law in charge of the efforts and let him go on TV and say we've been successful right at the point when the number of coronavirus deaths exceeds those from Vietnam.

It's just...a stunning, mind-blowing combination of sheer ineptness and calculated "do not give a shit about anyone other than ourselves" mindset going on here. There truly aren't any words to adequately describe the insanity of this administration and its actions (or lack thereof).

So yeah. They'd better be facing the most humiliating loss their party has ever seen this November.

Mmhm. It's an age-old GOP strategy. Create a whole bunch of mess and chaos while in office, then let the Democrats be the ones who have to clean it up, and if they don't do so fast enough for people's liking, use that as your opportunity to reclaim power.

I just saw the clip earlier where he abruptly ended the press conference and simply turned and walked away. How fucking old is he, seriously? Actual babies would be embarrassed by that pathetic display. This is your hero, your leader, huh, Trump supporters? The guy who turns tail and runs?

Of course he does. He can't handle a woman being smarter than him or standing up to him or calling him out for his shit. He's that fragile.

That ship has sailed, the checkpoints have already been skipped over in how many states now? I see a silencing of Dr. Fauci coming soon.

(CNN)Dr. Anthony Fauci, a key member of the White House's coronavirus task force, plans to tell a Senate committee on Tuesday that the country risks "needless suffering and death" if states open up too quickly, he told The New York Times late Monday evening.

"If we skip over the checkpoints in the guidelines to: 'Open America Again,' then we risk the danger of multiple outbreaks throughout the country," Fauci said in an email to the Times, referring to the federal government's plan for states to re-open. "This will not only result in needless suffering and death, but would actually set us back on our quest to return to normal."

Fauci's planned testimony will fuel a hearing where senators will finally get a chance Tuesday to face off over the effectiveness of the Trump administration's handling of the Covid-19 pandemic, in what could be one of the only public hearings featuring members of the White House's coronavirus task force.

But if they aren’t there, we won’t have to pay for them. That’s just called being a fiscal hawk.

Wasn't expecting this stupid letter from Trump today. Wasteful and unnecessary, pathetic attempt at patting himself on the back.

I also got the same letter today, having already received the check I shredded it immediately.
