I wonder if a brief suspension of rent and mortgage payments might be in order. That might be the widest-reaching economic support for those who have had to take time off work to be home with kids etc.

I’ve already talked to my parents about considering limiting or suspending rent from their tenants on the property they own. They’ve pretty much determined that in order to draw even on the property they might need to tap into the deposit, were they to suspend payments, but it could be done.

Now’s the time to be good people, people.

Well put . Nice to see some people get it.

I also saw a tweet from somebody suggesting that people send cards to those in nursing homes who may not be able to see their loved ones right now, so they know there are people out there thinking about them and wanting to make sure they're okay. That's a lovely idea and I may have to look into doing that if we can get somewhere to buy cards.

Here in BC Canada everything is pretty much shutting down, even the ski resort I was going to go ski on today! Except the casinos! BC’s lottery corporation doesn’t believe the casinos are gathering places because people go to gamble not socialize! Lol I doubt the virus cares what you call it (socializing or gambling). And out of all the places given that older people go to play slots, they should be the first ones closing down. But you know money....

That's so nice. Since I can't visit my Dad I'm going to be sending him cards. I can talk to him on the phone sometimes, I was able to today.

I'm so grateful that I can use telehealth for my weekly appointments. My counseling center decided to start using that now and they've shut the office down.

I fully expect that Ontario will be in Italy-style lockdown very soon.

And it should be. The entire country should be. People have shown themselves to be idiots - the majority gets it, but unfortunately the minority that doesn't listen to reason has to be policed, evidently.

MA shut down bars and restaurants too. No public gatherings over 25 people. Grocery stores and pharmacies stay open, but I believe all other stores will have to close. Movie theaters have to close, no concerts, and the obvious list goes on and on.

Do you know how many confirmed cases and deaths in Canada? What do people think of how Trudeau is handling it?

I appreciate being able to learn here from people what's going on in other countries.

New York State attorney general Letitia James has ordered right-wing conspiracy theorist Alex Jones to stop making misleading claims about supposed coronavirus cures sold on his website, InfoWars.

The attorney general’s office “is extremely concerned” about Jones hawking these products on his online show, it said in a cease-and-desist letter dated March 12. The products include a “nano-silver” toothpaste, which Jones said “kills the whole SARS-corona family at point-blank range.” There is no medical evidence behind these claims. In fact, the Federal Drug Administration and National Institutes of Health say colloidal silver is not safe to use and can even cause argyria, a bluish-gray skin discoloration that’s typically permanent.

“As the coronavirus continues to pose serious risks to public health, Alex Jones has spewed outright lies and has profited off of New Yorkers’ anxieties,” said Attorney General James in a statement. Such misrepresentations are illegal, according to New York law.

Jones opened his March 7 show by saying that the coronavirus is “synthetic and man-made” and “clearly a globalist ChiCom [Chinese Communist] plot.” In the past, he has also claimed that the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting that left 26 dead was a staged hoax.

InfoWars was not immediately available for comment. A product on the InfoWars page that contains SilverSol, one of the fake coronavirus cures, has a disclaimer on the purchase page, but it’s not clear when the note was added: “The products on this page are NOT treatments for any disease. They are not for use in the cure, treatment, prevention, or mitigation of any disease.” But one of the colloidal silver products is still advertised on the InfoWars website with a massive banner.

I had some dental work done last week and still need work (a crown) done on the same tooth. I was supposed to go in tomorrow.

My dentist's office just called saying that Ontario's Ministry of Health has shut down all dentists. Only the most urgent of cases can be accepted so they will let me know tomorrow whether I fall within those parameters.

the directive from my company's head office in australia is that anyone who wants to work from home can do so for the forseeable future, but the managing director of the canadian office very loudly said on friday "this is just a new version of the flu that goes around every year and everyone is overreacting, we'll be fine just carry on as usual" and now nobody is going to work from home because we're worried about getting on the dumb boss's bad side if we do.

i'll go in tomorrow morning (i need to get my notebook anyways if i'm going to be working from home) but if i hear anybody start coughing i'm getting the hell out of there.

Somewhere close to 350 I believe. Only 1 death so in that sense we are not doing too badly. But our cases are exploding, particularly in Ontario so it's just a question of time.

I haven't really heard much about Trudeau, positive or negative so I'm not sure people feel strongly yet. It's not like Trump - that is at total dereliction of duty and negligence and he just needs to fuck off to hell and leave the world alone already. We really may not be able to survive his "leadership."

Trudeau also came out very early to talk about the fiscal stimulus and is announcing individual relief within the next couple of days - no details yet but it seems like the feds will basically be giving us all cash - how and how much remains to be seen.

My husband works for an Australian company as well (in Toronto) and they have a totally different approach. He hasn't been in for a week.

Our company has been clear - soft "work from home" as of last week, and hard lockdown as of end of this week.

I am curious to see what kind of macro policy comes out of this. I am assuming by "giving us cash" you are referring to tax cuts of some kind?

No I literally mean giving us cash.

They have already waived the EI waiting period (so if you are laid off, you start collecting immediately). My guess is they will increase EI benefits so as to not bankrupt people who have been laid off due to closures (for example, daycare workers).

They have also promised relief for people in respect of child care, groceries, etc. The easiest thing would be to literally give every adult cash. But they may do something more targeted - it's just that it's really hard to roll out anything complex on such short notice.

"Last Week Tonight" had an excellent take on the current situation tonight. Obviously they're right to go dark from here on out for the time being and all that good stuff, but damn, I'm going to miss their commentary on all this craziness for however long this lasts. I'm sure they'll have a few things to say on Twitter and whatnot, though, so...

But yeah, when the episode gets uploaded online, I'd definitely recommend watching it.
