Organized, officially sponsored prayer in public schools is illegal, and I can't imagine charter schools are exempt from that. The religious instruction might be a gray area--I *think* it's permissible for an outside party to offer religious instruction to interested students on school grounds, once the official school day is over. It's not against the law for public schools to serve halal food.
I do recall some controversy over the last few years concerning a partially-Arabic-medium public school in New York and a partially-Hebrew-medium charter school near Miami; however, neither of those schools offered on-site religious instruction or had organized school prayer. |
