(If I took this seriously, I could do much better than a caricature of conservatism. But like I said earlier in this thread, I don't want to write a "Devil's advocate" argument that's so effective as to have it used against the causes I actually support!)

A lot of posters seem to be interpreting this thread as an excuse to give a rather stereotyped view of their opponents' positions, and then holding them up for scorn and derision (Melon's vision of the drug addicted, alcoholic, heterosexual Christian fundamentalist, and Indra's cursory dismissal of the point of view of anyone who doesn't agree with her, being cases in point) which doesn't really accomplish anything.

Surely it would be a more useful exercise to actually recognise those aspects of ideology that we don't precisely agree with, but in which we admit there may be some merit?

Edit: I just noticed that Diemen as already made the same point, in a pithier way.
