BOSTON, Jan. 14 (UPI) -- A Boston-area hardware store employee has been charged with spiking a co-worker's drink with ammonia.

"I still can't believe it happened," said Joseph D. Roy, who said his drink of Mountain Dew tasted off after one sip. "My whole mouth started burning and my eyes started watering."

James H. McConville Jr. has pleaded not guilty to charges of attempted poisoning and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, the Boston Globe reported Saturday.

Paramedics told Roy he might have some symptoms, but that he had not consumed enough ammonia to threaten his health.

A store surveillance video shows McConville working near ammonia and in a police report he admitted adding the cleaner to the drink. McConville says Roy had refused to repay him $30 and that he retaliated out of frustration, the newspaper said.

Roy said he repaid McConville the original $30 and gave him $30 more to calm tensions between the two.
