[Q] In a new book, "Christian Slaves, Muslim Masters: White Slavery in the Mediterranean, the Barbary Coast, and Italy, 1500-1800," Mr. Davis calculates that between 1 million and 1.25 million Europeans were captured by pirates called "corsairs" and forced to work in North Africa during that period. [/Q]

Anyone know anything at all about this?

I don't really know anything about this. But I do know that Miguel Cervantes, who wrote "Don Quixote", one of my favorite books, was captured as a slave by Muslim pirates and was ransomed.

Yeah this happened quite a bit in that world. The Barbary Pirates were quite the pirates. Even peace loving Jefferson went to war with them A marvelous display of early US naval capabilities, though it was not against a first rate power.

I saw a documentary on the Barbary Pirates, apparently there were quite a few European's who converted to Islam and became slave traders, they showed a Duchman who was captured then when he eventually gained freedom became a pirate himself.
