Bush Defends Chretien After 'Moron' Remark
(2002-11-22) -- Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien distanced himself today from his communications director's assertion that U.S. President George W. Bush is "a moron."

"He [Bush] is a friend of mine, he is not a moron at all," Mr. Chretien told reporters.

Mr. Bush responded, "I want to thank my good friend Jean, and I might add that I don't think he's a pathetic little socialist weasel with a girly name."

She shouldn't have had to resign.

I call Bush a moron all the time-and I'm an American.

She has the right to say what she wants about our president. Everybody has that right, no matter who our president is.

I've already posted my initial reaction to this whole overblown incident but I feel the need now to address the aftermath question of "should she resign/be forced to resign/etc." Please remember that she is/was a SPOKESPERSON for the Prime Minister of the Canadian government. In the presence of the media, whether on the record or in private conversation, she was heard saying "Bush...a moron." As a spokesperson for the PM of Canada, she is perceived by the press as a representative of the policies and/or opinions of the government; her actions and words will be sunbject to scrutiny.

I still have no opinion as to whether she "should" or "shouldn't" have been required to resign; I am merely trying to point out perhaps why she found herself in that situation.

Any time an American political figure says something "offensive" about someone else, it seems that there is a cry for his/her blood.

No, she wasn't.

She was an advisor, not a spokesperson in any capacity.

I am terribly sorry for mis-stating her title and I apologize for any misconception I have caused. I used the title spokesperson based on the information that ladywithspinninghead posted:

For those that don't know, Canada's spokesperson to the Prime Minister, Francoise Ducros, called Bush a "moron" for concentrating on Iraq at the latest NATO meeting in Prague...
And you may not agree with the concept, but even if she was merely an "advisor," she is perceived as being part of the PM's team, and it is not that extraordinary for someone from the media to perceive her as such.

Thanks.

i would prolly vote liberal, but the way they treat the west is unnacceptable. but because we dont have much a population, we dont have as many votes...

farmers are being jailed for selling their wheat across the border, while in quebec and ontario its completely fine.

*doesnt like chretien.

however, i do hope paul martin becomes our next pm.
Um, when I said he was a straight-shooter, I don't think I was saying he was a bleeding heart liberal...I was saying that Chretien is not exactly on the same page as Clinton, Blair, etc when it comes to diplomacy. Chretien says it like it is - agree with him or not, but I think it's refreshing to see someone on the international stage who says what he really thinks (although he may not always be the most articulate!!!)

Furthermore, I'm from the West too (as you know) ...

U2Bama,

Sorry for misleading you - there were conflicting reports here on her exact title when the story broke. I decided to incorporate both roles - advisor and spokesperson - and go with "spokesperson TO Chretien"! hahaha!!

No problem, ladysithspinninghead; someone else referenced her as the PM's "communications director," which is actually more of a fancy "spokesperson" than a "national security advisor" or "domestic policy advisor." Based on the sources I have seen, your use of "spokesperson" is accurate.
